Williams will kick off its 2026 F1 campaign at the Bahrain pre-season test after sitting out the early running in Spain. The absence did not go unnoticed, especially at a time when teams are desperate for mileage under the new regulations. Williams, however, has insisted there was no reason to rush the car out before it was ready. The team has now confirmed the new machine has cleared all FIA crash tests and will be on track in Sakhir. Instead of forcing a Barcelona appearance, the focus stayed on completing the build properly. With early-season parts always limited, Bahrain was marked as the point where the real work needed to begin.

Missing the Spain test was more about protecting the programme than hiding problems. Running there would have meant stretching parts and spares before official testing had even started. Williams preferred to keep everything in place for Bahrain, while continuing preparation through simulator work at the factory.

Once the delay became public, rumours followed quickly. Talk of crash test failures began circulating, but the team has since shut that down. Williams confirmed all required tests have been passed, clearing the car to run from 11 February when pre-season testing gets underway.

Questions were also raised about the car’s weight. Williams has dismissed suggestions of a major issue, pointing out that proper measurements only come once the car is fully assembled and temporary sensors are removed. At this stage, there is nothing to back up claims of the car being significantly overweight.

The team has acknowledged that the new 2026 rules have made the build process tougher than usual. Packaging demands and fresh design targets pushed timelines later than planned, delaying some key components. Williams’ focus now shifts fully to Bahrain, where valuable track time will begin to reveal where the team stands ahead of the season opener in Melbourne.
