Formula E Charging

Formula E is set to improve its racing strategy with the debut of 'Pit Boost' fast charging at the Saudi Arabia E-Prix on 14–15 February 2025. This exciting new feature, announced in 2022, adds a dynamic tactical element to the championship. After rigorous testing to ensure reliability, Formula E is ready to implement this system, eliminating the risk of errors that could disrupt races. Unlike delays in consumer EV charging, technical issues during a race can be catastrophic, which is why the rollout of 'Pit Boost' was delayed until perfection was achieved.

With 'Pit Boost,' race cars can recharge 10% of their energy—3.85 kWh—in just 30 seconds using a powerful 600 kW fast charge. The entire pit stop takes 34 seconds, allowing four seconds for connecting and disconnecting the charging cable. Unlike standard EV charging, which focuses on reaching 80% capacity, 'Pit Boost' delivers a quick energy injection. This innovation not only enhances race strategy but also opens new opportunities for overtaking, making races more thrilling for fans and teams alike.

Alberto Longo, Co-Founder and Chief Championship Officer, Formula E, said: 'After an extensive testing and simulation process, we’re pleased to finally present this game-changing technology to the world. It marks one of the most ambitious and impactful additions not just to our series, but modern day motorsport.

'PIT BOOST will challenge teams and drivers alike to make high-stakes decisions under intense pressure. The potential for dramatic overtakes, unexpected twists, and human ingenuity will elevate the excitement for our fans and showcase Formula E and the FIA’s relentless commitment to innovation. As a series born to enhance the technology transfer from the race track to the road, it marks a step change for consumer vehicles and the future potential of EV performance.'

Formula E will implement the mandatory 'Pit Boost' feature in select races this season, requiring all drivers to make a pit stop to recharge their cars. This feature ensures uniform participation and introduces a strategic element, as the energy boost increases power output over the race distance.

The 'Pit Boost' can only be activated when a car reaches a specific charge level, communicated to teams 21 days before the race. Additionally, only one car per team can recharge during the race, requiring careful coordination. Alongside 'Attack Mode,' teams must manage both tools to plan their races effectively and improve their chances of success.
