Pirelli has secured a major deal to become the official tyre supplier for MotoGP from 2027 to 2031. This marks a significant change in the premier motorcycle racing series, ending Michelin’s tenure. Pirelli, already the sole tyre supplier for Moto2 and Moto3 since last year, will now expand its influence across all classes. The Italian tyre manufacturer has developed strong reputation in motorcycle racing. Since 2004, Pirelli has been the exclusive tyre provider for the World Superbike Championship. This experience played a key role in securing the MotoGP contract. Meanwhile, Michelin will continue supplying tyres for both MotoGP and MotoE till 2026. The French tyre manufacturer was MotoGP's sole tyre supplier since 2016.

A statement issued by MotoGP says: ‘Pirelli will become the official tyre supplier to MotoGP from 2027. A new five-year contract until 2031 inclusive, currently being finalised, will coincide with a new era for the sport as new MotoGP bikes and technical regulations debut in 2027.

‘The strategy of having a single supplier in the paddock will provide the perfect development ladder for the champions of tomorrow to hone their craft on their way to the top. Further details on the tyre allocations and specifications to be supplied by Pirelli will be announced soon.

MotoGP: The New Regulation

MotoGP will switch to Pirelli tyres in 2027, aligning with the series’ transition to an 850cc engine formula. This follows a pattern in the sport, where tyre supplier changes coincide with major technical overhauls. The last major shift, from Bridgestone to Michelin in 2016, happened alongside the introduction of the standard Magneti Marelli electronics system. That season saw unprecedented competitiveness, highlighting the impact of technical synergy.

Pirelli’s dominance in motorsport continues to grow. It is the exclusive tyre supplier for Formula 1 until at least 2027 and now secures MotoGP, establishing itself in the world’s top racing championships. The company also provides tyres for the World Superbike Championship, with its current contract running until the end of 2026. This broadens Pirelli’s footprint in high-level racing.

While Pirelli’s Formula 1 deal has an option for extension beyond 2027, its growing commitments in MotoGP raise questions about balancing its responsibilities. Managing resources and technical expertise across multiple top-tier series will be crucial.
