Reigning MotoGP champion Jorge Martin has suffered another major setback after being diagnosed with six fractures following a crash during the Qatar GP. The Aprilia rider went down at Turn 12 on lap 14 and had to leave the race. Trackside doctors treated him before moving him to the medical centre for more checks. Martin’s 2024 season has been full of injuries. He first crashed during pre-season testing in Malaysia, breaking multiple bones. Another training crash before the Thai Grand Prix made things worse, forcing him to miss the first three races. Qatar was his comeback, but the crash ended it early.

Before the crash, Martin showed determination. He missed a spot in Q2 by a small margin and finished 16th in the sprint race after fighting near the top 10. But Sunday’s main race didn’t go well—he lacked speed and crashed out, scoring no points.

Aprilia later shared an update. Martin has fractures in his right posterior arches and a pneumothorax (collapsed lung). He will stay in hospital until his lung improves. There is no confirmed date for his return, and he might miss the Spanish GP in two weeks.

Martin’s injury may affect his MotoGP title chances. Ducati rider Marc Marquez won the Qatar GP and now leads the standings by 18 points over his brother, Alex Marquez. As the paddock moves to Jerez, Martin’s recovery will be closely followed.

Jorge Martin’s 2024 MotoGP season has been tough. With six fractures and a lung issue, his return to racing is uncertain. Aprilia will need to carefully assess his fitness before he can race again. Fans hope for a quick recovery, but it may take time.
