Sergio Perez Joins Red Bull Racing

Sergio Perez will replace Alex Albon at Red Bull Racing in 2021. Albon will move to the role of test and reserve driver for Red Bull Racing.

Sergio Perez will be joining Red Bull Racing as Max Verstappen’s teammate in 2021. The 30-year old Mexican, who lost his seat at Racing Point to Sebastian Vettel earlier this year, will be replacing Alex Albon at Red Bull Racing. Albon, meanwhile, will be stepping back to the role of reserve driver at Red Bull.

Perez started his F1 stint a decade ago at Sauber in 2011 and moved to McLaren in 2013. In 2014, Perez joined Force India (now Racing Point) and finished the 2020 season with the same team. In his F1 career so far, Perez managed to bag 10 podiums and one victory – which came only recently at the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix. Perez ended the 2020 season in fourth position – his best-ever finish in F1 – making him the ‘best of the rest’ behind Lewis Hamilton, Valtteri Bottas and Max Verstappen.

Commenting on the development, Red Bull Racing Team Principal, Christian Horner, said: “Alex is a valued member of the Team and we thought long and hard about this decision. Having taken our time to evaluate all the relevant data and performances we have decided that Sergio is the right driver to partner Max for 2021 and look forward to welcoming him to Red Bull Racing. Alex remains an important part of our Team as Test and Reserve Driver with a key focus on 2022 development and we would like to thank him for his hard work and contribution.”
