There has been a lot of speculation about UM Motorcycles bringing in an adventure tourer. The company has finally broken its silence and announced the launch in early 2019. The bike in question is likely to be the DSR Adventure TT showcased recently.

In terms of design, the DSR Adventure TT looks like a true-blue ADV. With a 21-inch spoked wheel up front and a 17-incher at the rear, the bike looks built for the purpose. The upright riding posture, tall windscreen and the flat rear rack further give it that adventure cred. Looking at the bike from the front, you might just be reminded of the Kawasaki Versys X-300 but in profile, it looks rather unique. It has the minimalistic appeal that you’d want in an adventure tourer. The UM DSR Adventure TT misses out on a LED/projector headlamps setup and makes do with traditional halogen bulbs. Weirdly, it doesn’t come with factory-fitted knuckle guards either. Behind the windscreen is a conventional semi-digital instrument cluster with speedo and tacho read-outs.

Internationally, the UM DSR Adventure TT comes with a rather small 125cc single-cylinder liquid cooled motor that pushes 14.75bhp to the rear wheel. Torque stands at 10.9Nm. For India, however, UM is likely to plonk it with the same motor that works in the Renegade – a 279cc single-cylinder that develops 24.8bhp and 23Nm. While there is no official confirmation as yet, there is also the possibility of the DSR being fitted with the smaller 230cc oil-cooled motor from the Renegade Duty.

The international-sped UM DSR Adventure TT comes with disc brakes at both ends and ABS as standard. Suspension duties are performed by telescopic forks up front and a monoshock at the rear. While the 125cc DSR weighs just 136 kilos, the India-spec model may be heavier if it comes with a more powerful motor.

As an entry-level ADV, the DSR Adventure TT may find a lot of takers especially given the state of our roads. That being said UM will have to work on the quality of parts. When the UM DSR Adventure TT comes to India, it is likely to have just one competitor – the upcoming Hero X-Pulse. Along with the ADV, UM may also bring in two more motorcycles – the Renegade Vegas and Renegade Duty – to India as well.

For two-wheeler enthusiasts, the 2018 Auto Expo brought in a lot of new and updated bikes to the market. Here’s a look at all the major two-wheeler launches from the auto show.

Yamaha:

As was expected, Yamaha didn’t disappoint and launched the YZF-R15 V3.0 and the 2018 YZF-R3 at the expo this year. Now, while the new R3 is just an updated model, the R15 V3.0 is the all-new third-gen model of the motorcycle. The motorcycle packs a new liquid-cooled, 155cc single-cylinder engine that develops 19bhp and 15Nm. The interesting bit is that the engine comes with variable valve timing, or in Yamaha-speak, VVA. The engine is mated to a six-speed gearbox that gets assist and slipper clutch. It gets new LED headlamps as well and the styling is completely revamped. Sure, it does miss out on ABS and inverted forks – which are offered in global markets – but, then, that’s done to keep the price in check. In fact, with an ex-showroom price of Rs. 1.25 lakh, the new R15 is a solid package.

As for the R3, Yamaha has, thankfully, addressed all the previous issues with the bike, which means that the bike now comes with ABS and stickier Metzeler tyres. Mechanically, the R3 is remains unchanged, but the 321cc parallel-twin motor is BS-IV approved now. Power output is the same at 41.4bhp and 29.6Nm. Its price has gone up to Rs. 3.48 lakh (ex-showroom), but that was expected given the new equipment on offer.

BMW Motorrad:

At the expo, BMW Motorrad launched two all-new, mid-class adventure tourers in India – the F 750 GS and F 850 GS. Both the middleweight adventure motorcycles were first revealed in 2017 at the EICMA show in Milan. The F 750 GS is powered by a liquid-cooled 853cc parallel-twin engine that produces 76bhp and 83Nm of torque. The F 850 GS gets the same engine, but it’s more powerful with 94bhp and 92Nm on offer. Both bikes come with a six-speed transmission. Both bikes have a monocoque, steel, bridge-type frame, and ABS and BMW’s stability control (ASC) with different riding modes are standard.

The F 750 GS is aimed at riders who mostly prefer tarmac, and as a result, it comes with alloy-wheels and on-road tyres. It’s priced at Rs 12.20 lakh (ex-showroom). The F 850 GS, on the other hand, is for someone who’s looking for off-road thrills, and, therefore, it comes with long-travel suspension, spoke wheels and off-road tyres. The F 850 GS carries a price tag of Rs. 13.70 lakh (ex-showroom).

Kawasaki:

Most of us were expecting Kawasaki to launch the new <a href="https://www.autox.com/reviews/bike-reviews/kawasaki-ninja-400-review-first-ride-105136/">Kawasaki&nbsp;Ninja 400</a>. However, instead of doing that, the Japanese bike maker went full mental and launched the Ninja H2 SX and SE models at the event. For the uninitiated, the H2 SX and SE are supercharged sports-tourers and are based on the madly powerful H2 an H2R. Both get the same inline four-cylinder 999cc supercharged engine that develops over 200bhp. However, for these bikes, the engine is tuned for more mid-range punch than outright top speed. The H2 SX is priced at Rs. 21.80 lakh, while H2 SE retails for Rs. 26.80 lakh (both prices are ex-showroom).

UM:

UM Motorcycles came up with pretty interesting launches at the expo. The company launched two new motorcycles – Renegade Thor and Renegade Duty. And what’s special about the former is that it’s a fully electric motorcycle. The Thor comes with a 30kW motor that has as much as 70Nm on offer. What’s more, it comes with a five-speed transmission – a first for an EV – along with a hydraulic clutch. The bike also comes with a reverse gear. As per UM, the motorcycle will have a range of 270km and a top speed of 180km/h. Initially, the bike will be priced at Rs. 9.90 lakh (ex-showroom), but the company says it’ll bring the prices down in the near future.

The second UM launch was Renegade Duty. It’ll be offered in two trim levels – S and Ace. Both will be powered by a 223cc, single-cylinder, oil-cooled engine that produces 16.5bhp of power and 17Nm of peak torque, mated to a five-speed gearbox. Both the variants are priced at Rs. 1.10 lakh (ex-showroom).

Aprilia:

At the Aprilia stand, the main highlights were, of course, the RS 150 and Tuono 150 – both are scaled down versions of the company’s flagship litre-class sports and naked bikes, respectively. However, while Aprilia has confirmed that these two will come to India, they are still a year or two away from their launch in the Indian market. That said, the company did launch a new two-wheeler for our market at the expo, and it was the smaller SR125 automatic scooter. Based on the bigger SR150, this one gets a smaller 125cc, 3-valve, single-cylinder engine that develops around 10bhp and 10.6Nm. It’s priced at Rs. 65,310 (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Auto Expo 2018: UM Renegade Thor, Renegade Duty prices revealed

UM expands its India range, while at the same time entering the potentially huge EV space. UM has showcased two new members of its Renegade series in India, the Renegade Thor and Renegade Duty – the former being an electric motorcycle.

UM Motorcycles will showcase a new 230cc cruiser and an electric cruiser at the 2018 Auto Expo.

UM Lohia Two Wheelers, the Indian arm of UM Motorcycles from America has announced that they will unveil an electric cruiser motorcycle along with a brand-new mass market cruiser at the 2018 Auto Expo.

The electric bike is the UM Renegade Electric concept motorcycle, which was also showcased at the 2017 EICMA in Italy. UM claims that it will be a first of its kind to feature a five-speed gearbox. The motor is also water cooled, and UM claims that the performance of the powertrain will be at par with 600cc motors. The real-world range of the Renegade Electric with its 27KW battery will be around 265 kilometres. And with its fast charging capabilities, the batteries will take 40 minutes to charge up to 80 per cent.

In Addition, UM will showcase their entire India line-up, which includes the <a href="https://www.autox.com/news/bike-news/um-renegade-commando-mojave-and-classic-launched-in-india/">Renegade Commando Classic</a>, Renegade Commando Mojave, <a href="https://www.autox.com/reviews/bike-reviews/um-renegade-commando-classic-and-mojave-review-first-ride/">Renegade Commando</a> and Renegade Sports S. Apart from showcasing these motorcycles, UM will also introduce a brand-new cruiser with an all-new 230cc engine at the Auto Expo.

UM to unveil new 230cc cruiser at Auto Expo 2018

Last year, after they launched in India, they were met with a slightly critical response – mainly because of the quality levels of their bikes. Presumably, this prompted them to take a long and hard look at their bikes, and they’ve certainly made great progress.&nbsp;

The fit-and-finish has certainly improved, and the overall stance is quite muscular. The majority of the quality issues also seem to have been addressed, however the overall quality is still under par. Several components do seem to be low-cost, and the use of cheap plastics doesn’t help much. But, still, the build-quality has improved drastically.

The overall specs of the bike are exactly the same as the previous Renegade Commando models, but the new styling is quite nice. The Classic and the Mojave will both stand out on the road. The Classic has got proper American cruiser attributes, while the Mojave looks more understated. The addition of accessories, like saddle bags and tank bags as standard, is also welcoming.&nbsp;

As touring motorcycles, the new UM bikes do the job just fine. They offer a comfortable riding position, but the seat could use some better padding. What these bikes have got going for them, though, is that the 279.5cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled EFI engine is quite impressive. It’s a well-built unit that feels refined and smooth. The specs aren’t bad either, with 25bhp and 23Nm of torque. The suspension setup is good for Indian roads, and even in the city the ride is comfortable.&nbsp;

However, these bikes are still a work in progress. Quality is improving, but they still have a long way to go.&nbsp;

Lohia UM is trying its best to tap into the Indian automobile market with their Renegade Commando line. Last year, after they launched in India, they were met with a slightly critical response – mainly because of the quality levels of their bikes.

When <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-bikes/um/">UM</a> motorcycles first came to India there was some excitement because a few more affordable big bikes would be available. However, UM didn’t really start off with a bang as their first two products took some time to gain traction in the market. They were also marred with a few quality issues, but slowly they have become a noticeable brand in the country.

The American bike maker has a fully functional manufacturing facility in India and it seems they are determined and focused to tap into the Indian market in the right way, and therefore they have launched two new pretty impressive variants of the Commando. The Mojave and the Classic are the latest motorcycles from UM, and I have to say that they are indeed a huge improvement over the previous models. The fit and finishing has certainly improved and the overall styling of the bikes is very nice. All the quality issues also seem to have been addressed, making these two models serious contenders in the Indian market. Both bikes are certainly going to turn heads, and what’s especially interesting is that UM is offering some added features and accessories to the bikes within their starting price tag.

The <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-bikes/um/renegade-commando/">Renegade Commando</a> Mojave is named after the American dessert area, and so it features its brown matte colour, that looks quite nice. The overall specs of the bike are exactly the same as the previous Renegade Commando models, but the styling is quite nice in the Mojave. It is very similar to the Commando model, but the Mojave also gets a nice sized saddle bag on the right side. The instrument cluster is a single round unit with the speedometer and a tiny display at the bottom that includes a gear indicator, fuel gauge and odometer. Like all UM bikes though the instrument cluster is placed rather low on the tank and you will have to take your eyes of the road for a significant amount of time to get a good look at it. Other than that the finished product looks good.

The engine and other specifications are exactly the same, which means that the Mojave also gets the 279.5 cc single-cylinder Liquid-cooled EFI&nbsp;&nbsp;developing 25bhp at 8,500rpm and 23Nm of torque at 7,000rpm. The engine is also mated to the same six-speed transmission with overdrive. The engine seems to be very well refined and does offer a good pickup. The vibrations seem to have been taken care of and the handle bars and foot pegs don’t hassle you at high speeds anymore. Um has certainly improved it ride quality. The transmission does work well but the gear changes could certainly have been smoother, and the heel gear lever dis bother me a bit.

The bike is comfortable to sit on and it’s also got a very good suspension setup. All the UM bike models get the same parts, which is a dual cradle chassis, conventional forks upfront and hydraulic shock absorbers at the rear. This setup offers pliant ride and the bike absorbs everything comfortably. We rode mostly on some nice smooth highways, but whenever the road became rough the Bike handled itself well. Even on twisty sections the Mojave did a good job and the bike seems well balanced. The Mojave is also relatively light at 179kilograms so it’s easy for anyone to ride. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The Renegade Commando Classic is pretty much has the same road manners as the Mojave. The Classic though, is now the most expensive offering from UM. It’s also the best looking in terms of overall design. The classic certainly does present itself as a premium classic styled cruiser at a very affordable price. It’s got some size and it’s got everything a classic highway cruiser needs, including a nice big windscreen, high handlebars, a big comfortable low seat, saddle bags, and plenty of chrome to make it shine. The Classic will certainly get you noticed, and the overall quality of the bike is pretty good, although the switch gears could have been better. As a total package though, the Classic is quite impressive. Once again UM certainly paid attention to improving the overall quality of the bike and with the added accessories, they have done a good job. 

The Classic gets the same engine and power specs as well as parts from all the other UM models. The Classic can easily cruise on a highway for long distances at decently high speed. You can also adjust the exhaust after you have bought the bike to make it sound a bit more like a throaty big bike. The riding position is nice but I think the seat could have been a little better, but its good no doubt.

The UM motorcycles are certainly eye catching and they have very respectable engines. They are not the most exciting to ride, but they serve their purpose perfectly, Now that all the quality issues have been taken care of and the engine vibrations have been reduced, I do think that UM has a pretty good chance at making a big impact in the Indian market. The Classic especially is very nice and it’s affordable and accessible to a lot of people who want to own a big beautiful cruiser. The Mojave is priced at Rs 1.80 lakh ex-showroom Delhi and the Classic is priced at Rs 1.89 lakh ex-showroom Delhi. A very good price if you ask me. If you don’t want to take my word for it then simply head on down to a UM dealer and take a test ride.

Expanding their offering in the Indian market, American motorcycle maker, UM has introduced two new variants of the Renegade. Through their partnership with Lohia Auto, UM has launched the Renegade Commando Classic and Renegade Commando Mojave.

Both bikes are powered by a liquid cooled, single-cylinder, 4-stroke, 4-valve engine. With a displacement of 279.5cc, the engine produces 24.8bhp at 8,500rpm and 23Nm of torque at 7,000rpm. The engine is mated to a six-speed transmission with&nbsp;overdrive.

The UM Renegade Commando Classic features high gloss metallic dual-tone paint job and more than 3,430 square inches of sparkling chrome. It also comes loaded with a saddlebag and tank cover, polycarbonate windshield, highway engine guards and alloy back rest. The dual-tone paint scheme on the Commando Classic will be offered in a combination of Copper Cream &amp; Candy Metallic Glossy Black.

Additionally, the second motorcycle that has been introduced by <a href="https://www.autox.com/news/bike-news/um-motorcycle-inaugurates-new-dealership-in-mumbai/">UM</a> is the Renegade Commando Mojave. Inspired from the Mojave Desert in North America, the UM Renegade Commando Mojave features desert coloured matte paint, Mojave Desert logos and fuel tank cell phone pad. The Commando Mojave, like the Classic,&nbsp;features&nbsp;electric start, telescopic front forks, and dual-shock rear suspension. Both motorcycles come with 18-litre fuel tanks and have a kerb weight of 179 kilograms.

An America-based motorcycle company known as UM Global has set up shop in India, started local production, and has just launched a 280cc cruiser for the Indian market. Haven’t heard about this? Well, let Jared fill you in.

There’s been very little that’s been said about the newly formed UM Motorcycles, and their new venture in India. And, believe me, I was as much in the dark as the rest of you. So I did some research on this new company that claims to be an American bike manufacturer. The ultimate truth, though, is that UM, or United Motors, have never really been an American motorcycle manufacturer. They are indeed an American bike company, but they’ve never manufactured their own motorcycles inside the US. They would simply import Hyosung bikes from Korea and Jincheng motorcycles from China, and then rebadge them as UM motorcycles and sell them in the US and Latin American markets. Unfortunately, their business model didn’t do so well, and they had to shut shop in the US in February 2010.

Here, in India, we first heard of UM Motorcycles in 2013 when Lohia Auto – famous for their e-rickshaws – entered into a 50-50 joint venture with UM Global. The newly formed company then opened a factory in Kashipur, Uttarkhand, and began producing a sub-300cc cruiser for the Indian market – which will also be exported internationally. Finally, at this year’s <a href="https://www.autox.com/auto-show/2016-delhi-auto-expo-to-kick-off-on-5th-february/">Delhi Auto Expo</a>, the bikes were revealed as the Renegade with two variants – the Commando and the Sport S. Now that the bikes are officially on sale in India, we got a chance to test both variants to see just how capable they really are.

The Renegade definitely looks like a cruiser. The Commando is more of a highway tourer, while the Sport S looks more like an urban sportster. Both bikes are fairly well designed, and they do seem to attract some attention while on the road. But, to best explain how attractive the Renegade looks, let’s assume you’re walking down a street and all of a sudden you see a very attractive women. She’s tall, slender, and seems to have the right proportions. As you continue to walk closer, though, you begin to notice that her radiance was a mirage. Well, the Renegade is sort of like that girl. The bike looks like a proper cruiser, and has all the right proportions and muscle. But then you get up close and personal, all of a sudden you notice the poor quality of the components.

Perhaps this was the case because it’s a pre-production bike, so stay tuned for a more elaborate test. As is, the best attribute is that it has a pleasant aesthetic appeal – which will definitely help it sell in India. But you can easily make out that the craftsmanship, finishing touches, and use of materials is quite poor. At that price point, the Renegade will compete with Royal Enfield – which is the only other cruiser with that kind of power.

The Renegade gets a single-cylinder 280cc liquid cooled engine, which gets 24bhp of power – almost equivalent to the 500cc Royal Enfield Classic. I got to spend an entire day riding both Renegade models in-and-around Delhi, and I must say that the engine of the Renegade is quite nice. It definitely has decent power and seems quite refined. The power output is very linear, and even on the highway, as you open the throttle all the way and switch through the gears, the power delivery continues to be smooth and on point. Even as you pass 90km/h and switch from 5th to 6th gear, the bike continues to pick up speed with ease. On the highway, this is great and the engine doesn’t feel stressed – but the vibrations do become quite an annoyance, especially on the handlebar. And, as you move past 60km/h, the bike does start to vibrate quite a bit. Naturally, on long rides, this is not ideal at all.

The seating position is nice, but tall people may not like the handlebars on the Sport S – which seem to be lower.&nbsp; The seats on both variants are also very hard, and this is another facet that doesn’t help the Renegade’s case of being a highway tourer.

The bike is quite light though, and so it’s not a problem to ride in the city – it’s just not the most comfortable. The suspension is well set up though, for both the city as well as the highway. It’s not as stiff as most American cruisers. The front end of the bike feels a little light, and you get a lot of feedback from the road – however, it’s still easy to handle around bends and go fast around sweeping corners. I’m not sure how the bike will handle on off-road patches, because the ground clearance seems to be quite low – so I don’t think it would be very comfortable to try a Ladakh expedition on the Renegade.

The Renegade isn’t the best built bike around, but, again, that could just be because it’s a pre-production bike. Either way, it’ll certainly give young men big egos – because it certainly does have that muscle American cruiser appeal. But that’s the only thing American about this motorcycle!
