Surprising Products Made by Automobile Manufacturers That Aren't Cars

Given the advanced technology involved in vehicle design and manufacturing, it's no surprise that automakers are branching into other markets, leveraging their expertise to create products for diverse segments.

<p>Take, for instance, the fate of two recent unveils in this ultra rarified space – the Rimac Nevera EV and the Bugatti Tourbillon.&nbsp;</p>

<p>To be fair, both are ultimate expressions of the automobile. <a href="https://www.autox.com/news/car-news/rimac-nevera-15th-anniversary-edition-unveiled-with-copper-paint-finish-limited-to-9-units-117715/">The one powered purely by batteries and four electric motors</a> produces 1,888 horsepower and retails for $2 million dollars. <a href="https://www.autox.com/news/car-news/bugatti-tourbillon-the-chiron-successor-unveiled-with-a-1775bhp-v16-and-a-stunning-instrument-cluster-117524/">The one sporting a retro horseshoe grille</a>, however, has a brand new 8.3-litre V16 under the hood that produces 986 horsepower. But, to compete with the likes of the new-age Nevera, it also has three electric motors and a battery pack that take the total output of its hybrid powertrain up to an EV-rivalling 1,775 horsepower. The Bugatti, however, will set you back an eyewatering $4.6 million.</p>

<p>The telling figure in this comparison, though, is this – of the 150 Neveras that Rimac planned to build, they’ve sold only 50, whereas all 250 Tourbillons that Bugatti aims to produce are already spoken for.</p>

<p>Matte Rimac, the Croatian innovator and entrepreneur – who ironically is the man behind both hyper-cars – feels that the issue lies in the fact that electric was cool when the Nevera was conceived about 7 years ago, but, with the mainstreaming of EVs, that cache has since disappeared. At least in the uber exclusive supercar space! Meanwhile, even though Bugatti had to concede to modernity in the form of three electric motors, the naturally aspirated V16 is very clearly the heart of the machine.</p>

<p>The other defining feature of the Bugatti comes from its name – Tourbillon – which celebrates the ultimate expression of mechanical watchmaking and craftsmanship. The clockfaces in the Tourbillon are literal works of art that truly live up to this name. After all, a Swiss watchmaker builds the actual gauges. And even the perspex that usually encases a traditional gauge cluster is replaced with sapphire crystal in this instance.</p>

<p>It's interesting to note that it’s the Tourbillon that’s flying the flag for all things analogue, since this is also a time when mechanical watchmaking is once again enjoying its moment in the sun – having long seen off the threat from quartz watches and even the more recent challenge from smart watches. Even in the world of haute horology, the Tourbillon doesn’t serve any real practical purpose – it did at the time of pocket watches – and yet it’s one of the most revered of watch complications. It’s exceedingly difficult to create, it is perhaps a fraction more accurate, but it is certainly more beautiful – and that’s the point. It’s not always about what has the most utility nor what’s most practical, but it’s about what has the most allure, the most romance, and what appeals to the heart as much as the head.</p>

<p>Coming back to the ICE vs EV battle, this in no way takes away from the fact that electric propulsion actually works far better for in-city travel. It’s cleaner, quieter, and cheaper to run. But what it isn’t is soulful or fun – despite the insane instant speed. In fact, that’s it’s only party trick. What it’s lacking is personality.</p>

<p>The Bugatti&nbsp;Tourbillon, the&nbsp;successor&nbsp;to the renowned Chiron, has made its debut. Bugatti's newest hypercar arrived&nbsp;twenty years after the revolutionary Veyron went into production and eight years after the Chiron was introduced. The brand-new model is a total departure from the iconic&nbsp;W16 engine of the company, and it was on showcase at a stellar&nbsp;international premiere in Molsheim, France.&nbsp;This time, it's electrified thanks to Mate Rimac, the relentless mind behind the world's fastest-accelerating hypercar, the all-electric Nevera.&nbsp;Production will be limited to just 250 units, with deliveries beginning in 2026 and a price tag of approximately USD 4 million (about Rs 33.44 crore).</p>

<h2>Bugatti&nbsp;Tourbillon: Mechanical Details</h2>

<p>The 8.3-litre V16 engine in the Tourbillon replaces the Chiron's quad-turbo 8.0-litre&nbsp;W16. It features a cross-plane crank, the 16-cylinder equivalent of a flat-plane V8, and spins to 9,000rpm, producing 972.5bhp and 900Nm&nbsp;of torque.&nbsp;Interestingly, Cosworth worked on the engine's development. It uses natural aspiration instead of forced induction.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Compared to the 1,556-bhp Chiron Super Sport, this could seem like a step backward. Three electric motors – two at the front axle and one at the rear – provide additional power to the V16. The three motors combined produce 778bhp. When the engine is included, the Tourbillon powertrain generates a powerful 1,775bhp. An&nbsp;8-speed dual-clutch gearbox handles the transmission duties.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Located in the centre tunnel and below the seats is a structurally integrated 25kWh T-shaped battery pack that, according to Bugatti, can deliver about 60 km&nbsp;of electric range. However, whether this is based on the more relaxed European WLTP cycle or the stricter U.S. EPA cycle is unclear. Rimac says the Tourbillon is lighter than the Chiron even with the load and motors.&nbsp;This was made possible, in part, by using 3D-printed parts, such as suspension components,&nbsp;45% lighter than those found on the Chiron. The&nbsp;Tourbillon can go from 0 to 100km/h in 2 seconds and 0 to 200km/h in less than 5 seconds. The top speed stands at 444km/h.&nbsp;Unlike most PHEVs, the battery is built with 800V charging hardware, allowing for a 0-80%&nbsp;charge time&nbsp;of under 12 minutes.</p>

<h2>Bugatti&nbsp;Tourbillon: Exterior</h2>

<p>The Chiron and its Veyron successor's design principles&nbsp;are still adhered to, despite the massive powertrain's distinctive influence. For instance, the W16 cars' recognisable "C-line," which was modelled after Bugatti's original road cars, is retained. Along with the two-tone paint job and the iconic horseshoe-shaped front grille are central dividing lines on the bonnet and roof.</p>

This is because physical controls are more dated than contemporary&nbsp;touchscreen-based systems. Bugatti&nbsp;will keep highlighting the physical and&nbsp;mechanical aspects of its cars, as evidenced by the intricate workings of the Tourbillon's instrument cluster,&nbsp;designed and built by actual Swiss watchmakers. In contrast, sibling brand Rimac places a strong emphasis on digital functionality and ultra-advanced electronic functionality.</p>

<p>Insinuating that the vehicle won't be dependent on Chiron foundations, Bugatti says the chassis is completely new. The Divo, Centodieci, La Voiture Noire, Mistral, and Bolide were among the more upscale versions that also used these foundations. The upcoming  Bugatti Chiron successor will use a hybrid V16 instead of the W16 engine used by the Bugatti Chiron, Veyron 16.4, Divo, Bolide and Centodieci.

<p>Bugatti has recently unveiled the final model of its regular Chiron, and while it may lack flashy features, it stands out due to its exceptional level of refinement. In the coming decades, it has the potential to be recognized as one of the most sought-after Chirons ever. This specific Chiron was customized for a Canadian client under the Sur Mesure programme.</p>

<p>The exudes a sense of sophistication with elegant copper accents contrasting against the primary colour, Nocturne, a stylish shade of black. The front fascia, the centre fin spanning the engine cover and decklid, and the famous C-line are adorned with these accents. The sleek black wheels, with copper accents, further add an extra layer of visual appeal. Everything, from the engine to the badges, is adorned with the signature copper theme, resulting in a truly captivating design.</p>

<p>While details about the Chiron's interior are scarce for now, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to assume that Bugatti will maintain the classy black and copper theme inside as well, ensuring a harmonious aesthetic throughout the vehicle.</p>

<p>A year after showcasing the concept at the Frankfurt event, Bugatti unveiled the production model of the Chiron at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show. Committed to maintaining exclusivity, the French carmaker planned to produce only 500 units of the Chiron. Bugatti has introduced multiple versions of the Chiron over the past seven years. In 2018, they launched the Chiron Sport, followed by the Chiron Super Sport 300+ the next year. Part of Bugatti's product line has always included customised, one-of-a-kind versions.</p>

<p>The Chiron is powered by Bugatti's powerful 8.0-litre quad-turbocharged W16 engine, which produces 1,479bhp and 1,600Nm of torque and is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The engine sends power to all four wheels and allows the car to do the 0 –100 km/h sprint in under 3 seconds, 0 – 200 km/h in under 6 seconds, and 0 – 300 km/h in under 13 seconds. The base Chiron has a price tag of around USD 2.6 million.</p>
