For years, EV sceptics have had one reliable trump card – charging takes longer than refuelling. Pull up to a petrol pump, fill the tank, pay, and you’re back on the road in minutes. Even with today’s fastest 150kW or 200kW chargers, most electric cars still need a good half hour to top up. Even while testing the cars for our cover story, the biggest pain point was having to set aside time for the MG Windsor EV to charge. The two internal combustion engine-powered cars could be refuelled in the blink of an eye. Range anxiety may have largely faded thanks to bigger batteries, but charging time remains a major inconvenience.However, BYD may finally have a solution to this problem. The company has unveiled the second generation of its Blade Battery, along with a new ultra-fast charging system called FLASH Charging. The headline figure is the charging power. BYD’s FLASH Charger can deliver up to 1,500kW through a single connector to the new Blade Battery 2.0. The result: a charge from 10% to 70% takes just five minutes, while a charge from 10% to 97% takes roughly nine minutes. According to the company, the system is designed to maintain high charging speeds even in harsh weather. BYD claims that it can charge the battery from 20% to 97% in about 12 minutes, even at temperatures as low as –30°C. BYD has already deployed 4,239 FLASH Charging stations across China and plans to expand the network to 20,000 stations by the end of 2026. Each station uses an integrated energy storage system that acts like a giant power bank, storing electricity and releasing it rapidly during charging sessions. This helps avoid overloading the grid while still delivering those blazing-fast charging speeds. Even the charging hardware has received some thoughtful design tweaks. The FLASH Charger uses a T-shaped overhead cable system that keeps the connector off the ground, preventing it from collecting dust, water, or general roadside grime. It also makes plugging in easier, regardless of where the car’s charging port is located. Europe is set to be the next market after China to adopt the technology, as the company aims to launch the Denza Z9GT as the first car to support this new battery and charging technology. If chargers this fast become common worldwide, it could accelerate EV adoption and alleviate most of the worries associated with public charging.

The BYD Sealion 7 was, without question, the biggest disruptor in this year’s annual track day lineup. As we noted in our comparison with the Ioniq 5 and iX1, if you want a head-turning design, cutting-edge technology, and strong performance on a budget, this is it. Its strengths are immediately evident. The Sealion 7 earned an impressive 4/5 for both quality and refinement, confirming what the cabin already suggests: its well-finished metal accents and premium, soft-touch materials are on par with established European rivals. That’s a remarkable feat. Visually, it’s a ‘masterpiece,’ as one jury member noted, and its 3.5/5 design score reflects the fact that it’s the biggest head-turner in its class – combining aesthetics with function in a way few rivals do.

In terms of performance, it tells a familiar EV story. The 4/5 ratings for both refinement and drivetrain highlight its instant, effortless acceleration, which is so addictive. But that straight-line surge doesn’t help it much on the track. Its 1:12.4 lap time, identical to that of the far less powerful Creta EV, and a tenth slower than the iX1’s, is respectable but not class-leading. The Sealion 7 is quick, but it isn’t a true driver’s car like its German rival.

It’s in everyday usability that the Sealion 7 shows its compromises. Ergonomics and practicality take a hit, reflected in its modest 3/5 score. It’s a high-tech, high-style proposition that trades some ergonomics and practicality for a strong ‘wow’ factor – although curiously, that didn’t translate into a high X-factor score from the jury. Still, it proves one thing beyond doubt – you no longer need to pay German prices to enjoy a genuinely premium experience. And that, in itself, is a major win.

BYD Sealion 7 at autoX Awards: Best Cars of 2025 Ranked

The BYD Sealion 7 offers strong value with its tech and style, but it does sacrifice some ergonomics and practicality along the way.

The arrival of electric powertrains has made even MPVs a lot more exciting, thanks to the instantaneous torque delivery of an electric motor. A case in point is BYD’s eMAX 7 – a successor to the e6. Yes, it has three rows of seating and is made for large families. And yet, the way it shoots off the line will surprise anyone who mistakes it for a sluggish people-mover.

Compared to its predecessor, the eMAX 7 has an extra row of seating, making it more flexible. Although the space in the third row is not ideal and is best suited for children, it does offer the flexibility of ferrying more passengers. The feature list is quite decent and includes the signature rotating touchscreen in the middle of the dashboard, and ventilated front seats. Now, despite a refreshed interior and added equipment, the cabin’s quality levels aren’t particularly impressive. Most of the updates are concentrated inside. Externally, the eMAX 7’s dimensions have grown slightly, and the visual tweaks are modest. It looks a bit more upmarket, but the e6 didn’t set a high bar to begin with. It’s still unlikely to turn heads or make anyone stop for a second look.

The eMAX 7 comes with multiple modes to fine-tune driving and regenerative braking behaviour. In its natural state, it’s a relaxed cruiser, with a comfortable suspension, light steering, and an easy-going demeanour. Despite being a comfortable, spacious, and family-friendly MPV, the eMAX 7 handles well when pushed – it remains composed at highway speeds, with commendable stability and enough punch, considering its weight.
