18 is the legal age to apply for a permanent/learner driving license in India. You can apply for a learner’s license for driving a car only after you turn 18. This remains valid for 6 months. It allows you to learn driving with a regular and experienced driver of your choice. If you want to drive a motor car or a two-wheeler, this should be along with a friend, relative or an instructor of a driving school who holds a valid driving licence. If you wish to become a professional driver and drive commercial, passenger or goods vehicles, you will have to get yourself trained at a driving school duly recognized by the Transport Department of the concerned state.
While driving in India, a driver at all times should carry his/her driving license, Registration Certificate (RC) of the vehicle he/she is driving, road tax payment receipt of the vehicle, purchase invoice of the vehicle, Pollution Under Control (PUC)/Emission test certificate, a valid insurance policy of the vehicle and the fitness certificate & permit (only applicable for transport vehicles). At no point should driving be undertaken in case any of these documents are not available /missing. All the above-mentioned documents need to be produced in case a traffic police officer stops you for checking your vehicle’s documents.

An applicant may visit the Regional Transport Office (RTO) based on the RTO’s area of jurisdiction and can apply for a learner’s driving license. After submitting the necessary forms, supporting documents and the prescribed fees, the applicant will have to pass an online exam which will test his/her knowledge of traffic rules and regulations. The preparation for the online test (mock questions) can be done through a driving school course or independently, by visiting the state transport website which will provide the sample test questions and other information on road signs and traffic rules. Once the applicant has cleared the online test, he/she will get a learner’s driving permit which will be valid for a period of 6 months from the date of issue. An applicant can apply for a permanent driving license in India only after obtaining a learner’s license and successfully completing the time period of the learner’s permit.
Any individual planning to apply for a driving license can either learn driving by joining a driving course conducted in the supervision of a certified driving instructor or can also learn driving from a friend/relative holding a valid driving license. Driving courses are offered by certified driver training schools across India and one can get in touch with their nearest driving school. Also, Maruti Suzuki has its own network of simulator-based driving schools and offer multiple courses for new drivers.
