<p>It’s a car which offers all the luxury I could ever ask for when I’m sitting at the back and all the power that I need when I’m driving myself. It’s a proper enthusiast’s car but I would have been even happier if the car came with a manual gearbox. That would have been simply amazing.</p>

<p>I have had a chance to see the interior of this SUV. It's having many features, and comfort is outstanding. Leather upholstery is really giving it a classy feel.</p>

<p>On the road this vehicle appears very large. It is tall and very long like a limousine. I always loved the Range Rover as it is Land Rover's costliest, top of the range SUV.</p>

Even in the present day, of turbocharging and electrification, this old adage still holds true. I was reminded of this thanks to a slightly unlikely vehicle – well, a pair of the same vehicles with different engines to be precise. The vehicle in question is known less for its straight-line speed and more for its rock crawling ability – the mighty Defender.</p>

<p>Disclaimer: I love the new Land Rover Defender. I love the original Defender too. In fact, one of the most fun cars I’ve ever driven is <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqKpbFG442A" target="_blank">a rally-raid-prepped Bowler Defender 90</a>. But setting aside dreams of conquering the Sahara, or perhaps the Himalayas, the new Defender remains one of the most capable cars in which to also traverse our city streets – which themselves are littered with obstacles, manmade and otherwise. Now, with the SUV in question, you could choose either a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol motor putting out just shy of 300 horsepower, or you could go the whole hog and opt instead for the fire-breathing 5.0-litre supercharged V8 monster making in excess of 500 horsepower. The latter is a bit of overkill, no doubt, for a trip to the local supermarket, but it’s better to have a little bit in reserve just in case – isn’t it?</p>

<p>Well, the V8 is certainly more entertaining. And, of course, it sounds far better. After all, who doesn’t love a V8 rumble – especially when it’s intertwined with some supercharger whine. The V8 sings, and it adds a layer of engagement that’s completely missing in its four-cylinder cousin. In fact, one of the reasons EVs are struggling to find favour with enthusiasts – despite offering blistering speed off the line – is that there’s no sound and no sense of occasion. Hearing forms an integral part of our five senses, and it’s one of the ways in which we engage with the world and make sense of it. The sound of silence is great for tranquillity but not when you want to form a relationship with your four-wheeled steed. Needless to say, the grunt from the supercharged V8 is addictive too.</p>

<p>But that doesn’t mean the four-pot doesn’t win back some points. It’s lighter, which means that the front end is sharper, and the handling is better. It’s more efficient, so it’ll be far nicer on your wallet (but if that was a point of concern you wouldn’t consider the V8 to begin with). Of course, the power – while adequate – is a bit of a letdown when you drive it right after the V8. But it is adequate. The question is this – is there such a thing as too much power? Being an off-roader, shod with all-terrain rubber, the V8 Defender gets quite squirrely on full power, not to mention the torque steer that exists despite the four-wheel drive system.</p><p>So, it seems the sensible choice is the four-pot and not the V8. But the extra four-cylinders and 3.0-litres give the V8 Defender a sense of capability and a character that its lesser sibling can never hope to match – no matter how tight you wear your thinking-man’s hat to convince yourself otherwise. As for having too much power? Well, I can’t say I’ve ever experienced that particular sensation… there’s no such thing as too much, in the same way that you can never have too much of a good thing! Or maybe I’m just not self-actualised enough to settle this particular debate…

<p><strong>The big daddy of all Range Rover models gets a mild makeover to ensure that it stays on the top rung of the ladder.&nbsp;</strong></p>

<p>Real estate prices in Mumbai have gone through the roof. Properties in some of the most upmarket areas will cost you around Rs 1 lakh per square foot. Pricey, right? Now consider this for contrast. The Range Rover LWB is 5.1 metres in length and 2.2 metres wide – that’s roughly about 120 sq. ft. of super built-up area, and it’s priced at Rs&nbsp;1.87 crore plus taxes. But, of course, this uber-luxurious SUV is for those who already have a palace, and are looking for further indulgence on four wheels. And, in that regard, the 2018 Range Rover is the big daddy of luxury SUVs.</p>

<p><b>Cool quotient &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</b></p>

<p>As you would expect, this flagship comes with cooled (and heated) seats for the driver as well as passengers. The front seats offer 20-way adjustments, which means that you would have to be chiropractically challenged if you’re unable to find a comfortable seating position. And since this is a car that will primarily be chauffeur driven, the rear seats also recline. Other cool bits of tech include two large touchscreens that dominate the centre console. Both screens are properly high-res and extremely responsive. Essentially, the Touch Pro Duo infotainment system is the same as the one found on the Velar and the Range Rover Sport. The traditional instrument cluster has also been replaced by a screen. So, in total, there are three screens – and if that’s not enough for you, there are two more for the entertainment of passengers at the back. But in the long list of features, a massage function seems to be missing. Sadly, it’s available only on the top-spec SV Autobiography trim. This variant also comes with a foldable ottoman and a fridge in the centre console. So, who really needs a palace if you’ve got a 2018 Range Rover?</p>

<p>The black and tan combination of the interior looks rich and voguish. I’m not a huge fan of the gloss veneer finish in a car, but there’s no denying that it looks elegant. And the quality of materials inside are exquisite. There’s more than enough knee and leg room at the back, which is expected, given that you could fit a Tata Nano within the wheelbase of the Range Rover.</p>

<p><b>Driving the behemoth </b></p>

<p>The 2018 Range Rover has been launched with two diesel and two petrol engine options – both of which are vailable in V6 and V8 forms. The variant that we tested was the base diesel, with a 3.0-litre V6 mill. While the initial response of this engine is faintly delayed, it does feel lively when the torque kicks in post 2,000rpm. We experienced this motor in the Range Rover Sport too, in which it feels a little more eager. That said, the 600Nm of torque on offer is enough to keep you hooked. The ZF-sourced, 8-speed automatic unit shifts up quickly but doesn’t drop gears with the same eagerness.</p>

<p>Although the Range Rover shares its engine and gearbox with the Sport, it’s the way it drives that sets it apart from its siblings. With luxury at the heart of the Range Rover, its setup is much softer than the Sport. This essentially endows it with a super supple ride, something that the bigwigs sitting at the back will appreciate. Handling isn’t quite the big Rangie’s forte, but that’s not a big issue, given the nature of the vehicle. Who would want to piss off the kingpin by taking a sharp corner while the boss is cutting a million-dollar deal at the back?</p>

<p><b>Large and urbane </b></p>

<p>The exterior remains more or less unchanged. The 2018 Range Rover retains the same silhouette, but introduces some key revisions that give it a modern look. The front grille is all-new, and the bumper has been remoulded too. It now gets the signature Land Rover LED headlights that are also seen on the Velar and the Sport. The taillights, however, continue to be vertically stacked. Although there aren’t any substantial changes to the Range Rover’s design, its appeal still comes from its sheer size. The Range Rover has three variants of the standard wheelbase model on sale, of which the diesel is only available in the base Vogue trim.&nbsp;</p>

<p>With this facelift, the Range Rover is now up to date in terms of technology and features, but sadly a majority of them are limited to the higher variants. At Rs 1.87 crore (ex-showroom), the Range Rover demands big bucks – especially for the Vogue trim that misses out on some features that you’d expect at that price. But, then, the Range Rover is above petty brochure battles. It’s about making a statement, and that it does very well indeed.</p>

Range Rover LWB Review, First Drive

The biggest of them all, the Range Rover LWB gets a mid-life update with some key revisions to keep it in line with the modern trends. But, how does it behave behind the wheel? We find out.

<p><em>The flagship Range Rover gets more tech, luxury and comfort for 2018, as well as a hybrid drivetrain for the first time – making the ultimate luxury SUV even more desirable than before.&nbsp;</em></p>

<p>Let me begin by saying that the current Range Rover didn’t really need much improving. Sure, the infotainment system was due for an upgrade, since it had been upstaged by the flagship’s less luxuriant cousin – the Velar. So, Land Rover did the obvious thing and performed a bit of corrective surgery – both inside and out.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The front grille now looks more modern, with design cues from the svelte Velar. At the back too, the taillights have been updated and look quite pretty now. The exhaust tips – even on the hybrid – are more prominent and look rather purposeful. On the whole, it looks fresh and modern – but the real changes are in the cabin.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Of course, the updated Range Rover gets the new Touch Pro Duo infotainment system, with its twin 10-inch touchscreens in the centre console. Like the Range Rover Sport, the TFT display that makes up the instrument cluster has also been updated – as has the head-up display. But, in India, what’s likely to clinch the deal for most buyers is the new executive rear seat package in the extended wheelbase version. Let’s just say that if you step out of your private jet and into the back of the Range Rover, you’ll feel perfectly at home.&nbsp;</p>

<p><em><strong>Private jet for the road</strong></em></p>

<p>The rear seats recline by up to 40-degrees and provide over a metre of legroom with the front passenger seat folded forward – the seatback of which has a footrest that folds out so you can literally put your feet up. The rear seats have 22-way adjustments and 25 massage programs. And to ensure that your mobile office is fully functional, you get 17 connection points in the cabin. You also get electrically deployable rear tables, as well as heated and cooled seats – not to mention heated arm, foot and calf rests. Even the operation of the central armrest and cup holders is automated – which, if I’m honest, would give me nightmares, since you’re in for trouble if you so much as blow a fuse in a car with so much tech. Plus, of course, try explaining the touchscreen operation to your ‘chauffeur.’&nbsp;</p>

<p>Fortunately, then, the new Range isn’t just about the back seat – the driving experience is still very rewarding indeed. And so is the off-road ability – even in the hybrid. Despite a battery pack and electric motor, the flagship Land Rover retains its class-leading 900mm wading depth. So, effectively, you can still go swimming in this machine – you wouldn’t, but you could! In fact, the additional (and immediate) torque from the electric motor is actually quite useful when the going gets tough off-road.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The P400e plug-in hybrid is powered by JLR’s ultra smooth 300PS 2.0-litre, four-cylinder Ingenium petrol engine mated to an 85kW electric motor that gives it a very respectable combined output of 398bhp and 640Nm – which enables it to sprint to 100km/h in 6.8 seconds and, more importantly, gives it 51 kilometres of electric-only driving range. Charging the 13.1kWh high-voltage lithium-ion battery pack takes less than three hours with a dedicated 32-amp wall box. With the standard 10-amp home charging cable that time extends to seven-and-a-half hours.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In India, we’ll continue to get the two V6 motors (petrol and diesel) and the V8 petrol as well. With the current regulatory environment, which offers no benefit to hybrids, we’re not likely to see the P400e in the near future. But what it points to is the fact that Jaguar Land Rover – with the launch of the all-electric Jaguar I-Pace SUV and the electrification of its regular product range – is very well placed for the future. The integration of the electric drivetrain in this instance is absolutely seamless, and the silent operation of this flagship Range Rover is actually quite fitting.&nbsp;</p>

<p>My only concern is the real-world efficiency of hybrids such as this. During short commutes, and with a full battery, the zero-emissions fully electric range will prove very useful indeed, but during our brief escapade in this machine, we saw a less than impressive average fuel economy figure of 11km/l – versus a claimed figure north of 40km/l. Bear in mind, of course, that we were playing in the mud and being very liberal with the throttle pedal once out of the road. The 2.0-litre petrol engine, mated to the electric motor, was more than willing to propel this mighty SUV enthusiastically down the road – perhaps a little too enthusiastically given the observed fuel economy! But I’m sure, if driven more sedately – and in all-electric mode – far better efficiency figures can be achieved.&nbsp;</p>

<p>All told, the Range Rover moves very eagerly and painlessly into the future – and it remains the ultimate luxury car for our market, bar none.&nbsp;<br />
