<p>I have always admired Land Rovers, and the Range Rover Sport is my favorite. The fact they&#39;ve managed to pack so much power in a SUV is truly amazing. The traditional boxy shape is great and traditional. So many Arabs drive these vehicles in Dubai and the deserts around there, the car must obviously be very capable then.</p>

<p>Range Rover Sport is my favourite SUV. I hope to own it someday and take it to the Himalayas. I would like to test its true abilities to see if all these reviews speak the truth about it. Love the luxurious interiors. I feel proud the company is owned by Tatas.</p>

<p>I’ve been a big fan of the Range Rover Sport ever since it was launched in India. When I finally got to drive one, it was only then that I realised just how good and capable a car it is. Love the imposing styling and large wheels.</p>

Even in the present day, of turbocharging and electrification, this old adage still holds true. I was reminded of this thanks to a slightly unlikely vehicle – well, a pair of the same vehicles with different engines to be precise. The vehicle in question is known less for its straight-line speed and more for its rock crawling ability – the mighty Defender.</p>

<p>Disclaimer: I love the new Land Rover Defender. I love the original Defender too. In fact, one of the most fun cars I’ve ever driven is <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqKpbFG442A" target="_blank">a rally-raid-prepped Bowler Defender 90</a>. But setting aside dreams of conquering the Sahara, or perhaps the Himalayas, the new Defender remains one of the most capable cars in which to also traverse our city streets – which themselves are littered with obstacles, manmade and otherwise. Now, with the SUV in question, you could choose either a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol motor putting out just shy of 300 horsepower, or you could go the whole hog and opt instead for the fire-breathing 5.0-litre supercharged V8 monster making in excess of 500 horsepower. The latter is a bit of overkill, no doubt, for a trip to the local supermarket, but it’s better to have a little bit in reserve just in case – isn’t it?</p>

<p>Well, the V8 is certainly more entertaining. And, of course, it sounds far better. After all, who doesn’t love a V8 rumble – especially when it’s intertwined with some supercharger whine. The V8 sings, and it adds a layer of engagement that’s completely missing in its four-cylinder cousin. In fact, one of the reasons EVs are struggling to find favour with enthusiasts – despite offering blistering speed off the line – is that there’s no sound and no sense of occasion. Hearing forms an integral part of our five senses, and it’s one of the ways in which we engage with the world and make sense of it. The sound of silence is great for tranquillity but not when you want to form a relationship with your four-wheeled steed. Needless to say, the grunt from the supercharged V8 is addictive too.</p>

<p>But that doesn’t mean the four-pot doesn’t win back some points. It’s lighter, which means that the front end is sharper, and the handling is better. It’s more efficient, so it’ll be far nicer on your wallet (but if that was a point of concern you wouldn’t consider the V8 to begin with). Of course, the power – while adequate – is a bit of a letdown when you drive it right after the V8. But it is adequate. The question is this – is there such a thing as too much power? Being an off-roader, shod with all-terrain rubber, the V8 Defender gets quite squirrely on full power, not to mention the torque steer that exists despite the four-wheel drive system.</p><p>So, it seems the sensible choice is the four-pot and not the V8. But the extra four-cylinders and 3.0-litres give the V8 Defender a sense of capability and a character that its lesser sibling can never hope to match – no matter how tight you wear your thinking-man’s hat to convince yourself otherwise. As for having too much power? Well, I can’t say I’ve ever experienced that particular sensation… there’s no such thing as too much, in the same way that you can never have too much of a good thing! Or maybe I’m just not self-actualised enough to settle this particular debate…

<p><b>The Range Rover Sport has been facelifted. But, with the prettier Velar now very much in the picture, should you still choose the Sport? </b></p>

<p>Let’s, for a moment, go back half a decade. Back then, the Range Rover Sport had a reasonably straightforward task ahead of it. First, it needed to bridge the gap between the Evoque and the flagship Range Rover – something it did rather well. And, second, it had to live up to both the Range Rover and the Sport badges. But, today, things have become even more complex. And, interestingly, its own siblings are responsible!</p>

<p>You see, the prices of both the Range Rover Velar and the Land Rover Discovery somewhat overlap that of the Range Rover Sport – which means that the sibling rivalry is well and truly ripe in this case. So, the question for the new Range Rover Sport is this – does it have what it takes to muscle its way into what is very much a crowded space?</p>

<p><b>What’s new? </b></p>

<p>A brief and succinct answer to the above question is <i>yes, it does</i>. Without being trite, let’s begin with the exterior. Instead of the twin-slat grille from before, the 2018 Range Rover Sport has a honeycomb face and sleeker LED headlamps. But it’s the bumper with its large air dams that ensures it lives up to the ‘Sport’ moniker. The 21-inch alloy wheels are sportier than before, and a redesigned rear bumper and new LED taillights complement its rear end quite well.</p>

<p>Now, coming to more complex and important changes in the cabin, it’s impossible not to be impressed by the two large screens that dominate the dashboard. The upper screen is the new InControl Touch Pro Duo infotainment system that appeared on the Velar. However, this new unit is crisper and more responsive to touch than before. The touchscreen at the bottom controls the drive modes, air con and the seat heating. Thankfully, though, the last two functions can also be controlled via knobs. But it seems that the folks at Land Rover weren’t happy with just two screens, so they added a third one for the instrument cluster. Plus, almost all buttons on the 2018 Range Rover Sport, including the ORVM adjustment, steering mounted controls and the cruise control, are touch sensitive. The buttons are superbly built though, and the materials have a premium feel about them.</p>

<p><b>How does it drive?</b></p>

<p>We’ll get to how it drives in a minute, but first let’s get a few essential numbers out of the way. Despite an aluminium base, the Range Rover Sport weighs 2,115 kilos – and that’s a lot of weight to lug around. Thankfully, though, the 3.0-litre V6 diesel that it comes with is powerful enough for the challenge. Dismissing the 100km/h mark in 7.7 seconds, this Rangie with the V6 diesel is energetic enough, if not overly eager. At 255bhp, it has a power-to-weight ratio of 120 horses-per-tonne. But the <i>crème de la crème</i> is the more than 280Nm of torque that it produces per tonne. Kicking in as low as 2,000rpm, this allows the engine to have great driveability, even on winding uphill roads. And, as you accelerate and gain speed, you’re greeted with a sweet sound that’s like music to your ears. The 8-speed transmission is a bit of a downer though – while upshifts are smooth, kickdown (and downshifts in general) could have been more urgent.</p>

<p>The heart of the Range Rover Sport makes it feel smaller than it really is, but it’s when you drive it in the concrete jungle that is Mumbai that you realise the magnitude of its actual 4.8 metre size. While visibility around the corners is good, the high window sill can almost hide a supermini on the far side – creating a huge blind spot. That aside, the Range Rover Sport is rather easy to park and manoeuvre in traffic, thanks to its various sensors all around.</p>

<p>The Range Rover Sport has been setup on the firmer side, but that still doesn’t give it enough sportiness – especially in comparison to cars like the Porsche Cayenne. Sure, the air suspension means that body control is good too, but it’s far from being ‘sporty.’ But the real joy of driving the Range Rover Sport is when you take it off-road. Show it steep rocky climbs, slush, or even water crossings, and the Range Rover Sport tackles them all with more ease than your average vehicle would have getting in and out of the driveway.</p>

<p><b>Should you buy it? </b></p>

<p>To buy or not to buy, that’s the question. Let’s consider a few things first. With all the updates, the Range Rover Sport is now everything that you’d expect from a present-day luxury SUV. Loaded with tech, it’s in line with the rest of the line-up. It’s refined and comfortable, and there’s almost nothing that the Sport doesn’t offer. The Range Rover Sport is truly a multipurpose vehicle. It has the makings of an ideal grand tourer, with unparalleled off-roading capabilities.</p>

<p>In simple terms, the Range Rover Sport is for those adventurous souls who wouldn’t mind taking a Rs 1.30 crore (ex-showroom) car off-road. If you don’t consider yourself to be that adventurous, then, well, you’ve got your answer, and you’re better off spending a little bit less on the uber-cool Velar.</p>

Range Rover Sport Review, First Drive

For 2018, the Range Rover Sport receives a much-awaited facelift. With the Velar and Discovery in the picture, is the Sport enticing enough to justify its tag? Head here for the full review.

<p><strong>Now that you’re suitably familiar with Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations, here’s a machine that proves that they’re not just engineers but also physicists rewriting the laws of the universe.&nbsp;</strong></p>

<p>We first drove the <a href="https://www.autox.com/reviews/car-reviews/audi-s5-vs-range-rover-sport-svr-vs-bmw-x6-m-vs-mercedes-amg-gt-s/"><strong>Range Rover </strong></a><a href="https://www.autox.com/reviews/car-reviews/audi-s5-vs-range-rover-sport-svr-vs-bmw-x6-m-vs-mercedes-amg-gt-s/"><strong>Sport</strong></a><a href="https://www.autox.com/reviews/car-reviews/audi-s5-vs-range-rover-sport-svr-vs-bmw-x6-m-vs-mercedes-amg-gt-s/"><strong> SVR</strong></a> at the Buddh International Circuit in late 2015. It was clear then that the RR Sport SVR was a bit of a mental machine. It was over two tonnes in weight, but was fitted with the drivetrain of a <strong><a href="https://www.autox.com/reviews/car-reviews/2018-jaguar-f-type-svr-review-first-drive-103434/">Jaguar F-Type R</a></strong> and had the soundtrack to rival a Top Fuel Dragster that gulps 40 litres of nitro methane a second – of course, said dragster will reach 100km/h in half that time. But we’re not here to talk about machines that are built solely to last the quarter-mile. We’re here to discuss a Land Rover – a machine that’s ostensibly meant to allow you to take a leisurely tour of the country estate. Well, not this one! Make no mistake, it is a Land Rover, so it still has all the off-road modes that make it virtually as capable as its siblings off the tarmac, but this one is very much designed to cover asphalt as quickly as possible.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>I have to admit, though, that while I was (and remain) completely seduced by the soundtrack of the Range Rover Sport SVR, I’m not sure that a racetrack was the right place to have tested the car. Sure, with 543 horsepower, it was exceedingly fast in a straight line but it just felt a little too big and heavy for a track. We also had the BMW X6 M in the same test, and that felt far more composed at the limit. The SVR would surrender to understeer coming out of tight corners, and the body roll was quite noticeable in quick changes of direction – not to mention the squat while accelerating and the dive while braking.</p>

<p><b>So, what’s new?&nbsp; </b></p>

<p>So, what did SVO do? Well, they gave it more power of course! As with the F-Type SVR, the Range Rover Sport SVR too produces just shy of 570 horsepower and a full 700Nm of torque. Yup, that means this SUV will blur the scenery immediately and accelerate to 100km/h in a sports car-rivalling 4.5 seconds.</p>

<p>Fortunately, that’s not all. Land Rover has also made this machine feel cutting edge and even more luxurious on the inside. Of course, it gets the twin-touchscreen infotainment system from the Range Rover Velar. And the whole system, including the revised graphics on the TFT screen that makes up the instrument cluster and the head-up display, looks truly modern and make it very intuitive to use. Fingerprints aren’t as much of a problem as you’d think – at least not in the near-freezing temperatures of the Midlands in the UK during our test. What remains a problem, however, is the need to take your eyes off the road to use the touchscreen, which becomes that much harder to do because many of the “buttons” are far too small – making the act of changing driving modes on the move especially fiddly.</p>

<p>Land Rover has also worked hard to make this RR Sport as light as possible – to the extent that the sport seats (similar to the F-Type) now have magnesium frames that make them 30 kilos lighter than before. They remain incredibly hip-hugging and supportive, but the F-Type SVR manages to get that balance between sport and comfort just right, while these remain that little bit firmer than I would like. On the whole, though, the cabin is absolutely beautiful – it feels like a high-end bespoke suit.</p>

<p>In the effort to save weight, the engineers have also give the new RR Sport SVR a carbon-fibre bonnet. From afar, it looks almost like an aftermarket add-on, but look at it up close and you realise that it’s not only beautifully integrated and vented, but also exquisitely finished. Plus, it certainly sets the SVR apart from any other Range Rover model. This is car that, with its mad exhaust note and aggressive design details, certainly looks the part – this is not a machine that intends to fly under the radar.</p>

<p><b>Lighter, faster &amp; better&nbsp; </b></p>

<p>What all this light-weighting has done, along with a completely recalibrated air suspension all around, is make the 2018 Range Rover Sport SVR feel like a completely different machine. While you were acutely aware of the weight above the front axel of the previous model, this one feels incredibly nimble and responsive – and, yes, it really does feel physics defying. It’s not only stupendously fast, but also extremely composed. The front end simply goes exactly where you point it without any hesitation whatsoever. There’s no understeer, on roll, no pitch, no dive, nothing but absolute speed and precision.</p>

<p>There’s one more thing though, and that’s refinement and comfort. Sure, in Dynamic mode, the suspension is actually quite stiff. So, you reserve that for the track. And, yes, you can actually take this machine to the racetrack now. The steering is sharp and, with torque vectoring and the new suspension set-up, you can actually use the majority of that 567bhp and 700Nm. But none of these numbers make any difference whatsoever when you hear the guttural roar and bark from the exhaust – which continues to be addictive and beguiling, making this car that much more desirable.</p>

<p>And that’s what it boils down to – desire! You see, there’s no rational reason to own a car like this. Sure, with the rear seats folded, you can carry almost 800-litres, and, yes, it’ll seat your friends, family and Alsatian in comfort, but there are a lot of cars that can do that – but not many sports cars! This one will keep up with the fastest road going machines, and give you the option of turning off the beaten path as well. It’ll tackle our roads and won’t have to remain in the garage during the monsoon. It’s loud, fast, desirable, and makes that sports car seem very impractical indeed.</p>

<p>Oh, but (at around 2 crore) you may have to rob a bank to own one. At least you can enjoy the exhaust note for free if you happen to be anywhere within a one-kilometre radius of one on the road…&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>
