    It’s rare for a car to win the coveted ‘Best of’ award by being understated, yet the Mercedes-Benz E450 does exactly that – an absolute masterclass in sleeper performance. At first glance, it seems like a standard E-Class – elegant and comfortable – and as our first drive review noted, its AMG Line cues are so subtle that if you blink, you might miss them. The 18-inch AMG wheels look small and uninspiring. This car doesn’t shout; it whispers. There are no aggressive wings or carbon-fibre splitters. And then you see it in action on the track – it clocked a lap time of 1:10.1 at the BIC. That’s not just fast – that’s staggering. This lap time is a testament to its chassis engineering, considering this is a long-wheelbase luxury sedan, not a lightweight sports car. <p>The secret lies in the ‘450’ badge. Beneath the unassuming exterior sits a formidable 3.0-litre inline-six turbocharged engine. Paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system, it produces 381bhp and 500Nm of torque, propelling the car from 0 – 100km/h in just 4.5 seconds. It’s a big, heavy car, but the way it masks all that mass when you floor the throttle is mesmerising. Power delivery is smooth and assured, climbing beautifully up the rev range. While it does feel slightly more front-heavy than the four-cylinder E200, the 4Matic all-wheel-drive system manages the power with such competence that it remains balanced. It’s not only quick in a straight line but also tackles corners with unexpected poise, only showing its limits if you attempt an aggressive, high-speed direction change.</p>

<p>But performance alone didn’t seal the E450’s victory. It’s a ‘Best of 2025’ winner because it’s a complete package, one that refuses to compromise. It offers AMG-level excitement for the driver—fronted by the full MBUX Hyperscreen and a 4D Burmester sound system—while spoiling rear passengers with indulgent comfort. This is, after all, a long-wheelbase cabin with reclining seats, electronic sunblinds, and S-Class-like legroom. The hydro-pneumatic Airmatic suspension is the heart of its dual nature. This system is the true enabler, providing a cushioning effect over potholes that no rival can match, while simultaneously preventing the body roll that would otherwise plague a car of this size on a fast lap. Mercedes-Benz E-Class LWB Wins Car of the Year - autoX Awards 2025

The Mercedes-Benz E450 effortlessly fuses supreme luxury with jaw-dropping performance. It’s this breathtaking duality that left the jury unanimous in its praise.

As longtime readers of the magazine will know, I’ve been an unabashed G-Wagon fan for decades. The G is one of those perplexing machines that don’t really make any sense, but at the same time, they are the best choices you can make. Why, after all, would anyone need a twin-turbo V8 engine in a car that was designed to go off-road and has three differential locks to make sure that it can tackle any terrain? Or why would anyone need side-exit exhausts that make an absolutely beautiful racket when you rev the car?</p><p>And yet, that’s exactly what makes the G so special. The mechanical feel, the sheer solidity of its construction – well, it’s all intoxicating, really. Take the doors, for instance. As our instructor at the G Experience centre joked, ‘You can’t slam a G-Wagon’s door too hard – you simply need to use your strength to close it.’ When it shuts, with a solid sound of the central locking, it feels like you’ve sealed a vault full of precious jewels.</p>

      
    
      
    


<h2>A Glimpse into History</h2>

<p>Before participating in the G-Class experience, we toured the assembly line that’s been manufacturing every single G-Wagon since 1979. In fact, the G is exclusively built by Magna for Mercedes at the Graz plant – the only facility in the world to do so from day one.</p><p>

    </p><p>And we witnessed the whole plant and the processes through which a G-Wagon is built. Watching all of it in motion was fascinating.  From various exterior colours to different interior trims, each G-Wagon feels like it’s made to a personal brief rather than a production quota. The pride that Graz takes in being home to the production of the G-Wagon is palpable – locals even boast about custom-built versions, like the ‘Popemobile’ based on the G580 electric, which was created for Pope Francis.</p>

      
    
      
    


<h2>Proof is in the Pudding</h2>

<p>But the real magic began at the G-Class Experience Centre, tucked away in a corner of Graz Airport. It’s here that the G’s mettle can be tested across an array of brutal challenges. Before we hit the course, though, we were greeted by an extraordinary sight – the original 1979 G-Wagon encased in the world’s largest single piece of amber. Created for the 2018 Detroit Auto Show, it weighs a mind-boggling 44 tonnes – a fitting tribute to a machine that has become a legend in its own right.</p><p>

    </p><p>After a quick briefing, it was time to get serious and drive the G through challenging conditions and see how it fares. Behind the wheel of the G 500 and G 450d, we tackled the articulation course first. With the centre differential locked, the G simply drove through obstacles with ease. Next came the side-incline test. We tilted the G up to a dizzying 36 degrees, the maximum Mercedes claims it can handle under standard test conditions. And yes, it felt every bit as dramatic as it sounds.</p>

      
    
      
    


<h2>Flooded Roads?</h2>

<p>The next driving challenge was perhaps the most relatable one for Indian conditions – deep-water wading. It effectively mimicked the monsoon chaos that we witness every year in cities like Delhi, Gurugram, and Mumbai. We drove through 700mm of standing water, which effectively demonstrated how the G-Wagon might just be the perfect car for anyone living on Gurugram’s Golf Course Road. Despite the water level, all we had to do was slot the G in gear – it simply glided through the water as if it were a puddle.</p><p>

    </p><p>After the off-roading and water wading, things got a bit more interesting and challenging. We switched to the G580 EV and attempted some serious climbs and drops that were designed to showcase the its off-road capabilities. We began with a climb on an 80% incline, which the G handled effortlessly, except for some traction and slippage issues caused by the rubber deposits left by other cars. I took another run at it, and this time, I managed to get it to climb the incline without any issue. Immediately after came a 70% descent – nearly vertical – and though it looked terrifying, the G’s hill descent system handled it immaculately.</p><p>

    From there, we switched to the G63 AMG and experienced its dynamic capabilities on a stretch of the airport’s tarmac. We tested its acceleration, braking, and even performed the Elk Test manoeuvre. It was a thrilling experience to push such a large, heavy machine to its limits and see how it behaves. Add to all this the V8’s amazing exhaust note, and it was pure mechanical theatre.</p>

      
    
      
    


      
    
      
    


<h2>Reality Check</h2>

<p>While we couldn’t tackle the legendary Schöckl Mountain course this time, it was still an amazing experience. In fact, the G-Class Experience Centre has plenty to offer for both customers and enthusiasts. From the off-road course to the G-Class EV experience and the dynamic section with the G63 AMG, there was no shortage of adrenaline. But just when we thought the day was done, the team at the G Experience Centre had a surprise in store – a ride with one of their instructors across the entire course.</p><p>

<p>Now, since all the instructors have a racing background, we should’ve known what was coming. Still, nothing could have prepared us for what followed. Our instructor took the same course we’d spent all day carefully crawling through – water wading, inclines, descents, and the dynamic section – and drove it like a full-blown rally car. He blasted through water wading sections at nearly 100km/h, flew up and down inclines we had tiptoed over at 6km/h, and even drifted the G-Wagon through the tarmac section while taking U-turns, casually chatting the entire time. He did it all and in style!</p><p>

<p>After spending the day feeling rather proud of my on- and off-road driving skills, that ride was a brutal, and hilarious, reality check. Still, getting to drive one my favourite cars, experience its full range of abilities, and live the G-Wagon life – even for a day – was an experience that I will never forget. And given the chance, I’d do it all over again in a heartbeat.

As a lifelong G-Wagon fan, visiting its birthplace in Graz, Austria, to see how it’s manufactured and to experience its capabilities was an opportunity of a lifetime.

Senna took delivery of the sedan in October 1985, shortly after impressing at the 1984 Nürburgring Race of Champions, where he drove a similar 190 E to victory against established world champions. <p>The 190 E 2.3-16 represented a high-performance version of the Mercedes W201. Competing directly with the BMW M3, the car was well regarded among enthusiasts of the era. The Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW 5 Series have been long-time rivals, but in their latest long-wheelbase avatars, the debate gets even more interesting.

<p><em>A supercar with a convertible roof can be quite the spectacle – both to drive, as well as to gawk at. With the launch of the Mercedes-AMG GT Roadster, Ishan got to experience both at the Buddh International Circuit. We’re not sure if he was able to feel the wind in his hair though...&nbsp;</em></p>

<p>Whenever there’s a discussion about supercars, especially amongst the automotive enthusiasts of the world, most people seem to prefer coupes. This preference goes back to the fact that most hardtop supercars are slightly better to drive than their heavier, and therefore slower, convertible siblings. To be honest, I tend to agree with that assessment. However, the technological progress over the years has ensured that convertible supercars are now almost as good to drive as their coupe brethren – and that’s no mean feat.&nbsp;</p>

<p>With this fact firmly in mind, I turned up at the Buddh International Circuit on the afternoon of a beautifully overcast and cool day for my turn to drive the latest supercar to hit our streets – the AMG GT Roadster. Tough job, I know!&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Topless beast</strong></p>

<p>Now, I’ve had the pleasure of driving the AMG GT S at the track before, and I have to say that I found it to be a sublime experience. It’s a supercar that offers instant grunt from its 4-litre twin-turbo V8, not to mention handling manners and predictability that would put its elder sibling – the SLS AMG – to utter shame. The responses of the GT, especially at the limit, are completely predictable – whereas its predecessor, the SLS, came across as&nbsp;a car that wanted to bite your head off the minute you took any liberty with it whatsoever.</p>

<p>This clearly means that the convertible AMG GT has a large precedent to build up on. It certainly does so on the styling front, with the new AMG ‘Panamericana’ grille drawing inspiration from the 300 SL race cars that competed in the Carrera Panamericana – one of the most gruelling motor races of all time, which took place on the Pan American highway in the 1950’s. So, the AMT GT Roadster has a very aggressive front grille with bold chrome slats that dominate the front end and make it look as though it has the mouth of a big fish that’s all set to devour its prey. Let’s just say that it’s a very clear statement of intent from AMG. On the whole, the AMG GT Convertible is pretty good looking, especially with its top down.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The interior remains largely the same as the coupe, except that with the roof down it feels a lot roomier. But we’re at the track for a specific reason, so it was time to get into the snuggly fitting sports seat and fire up the motor. The next step was to set the exhaust to sport mode for full effect and pelt away from the pit lane. First impressions are fantastic, despite the power being a tad less than the coupe – the roadster has 470bhp versus 503bhp for the hardtop. Nevertheless, the GT feels phenomenally fast and responds instinctively to steering and throttle inputs.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Musical crescendo</strong></p>

<p>With the top down, the guttural soundtrack of its hand-assembled engine only adds to the driving experience. Despite being slightly heavier than the coupe, and with slightly less structural rigidity, the AMG GT Roadster is perhaps the finest convertible supercar I’ve driven at the circuit. The engine response, suspension setup and neutral handling all make it a real experience to savour. Adding to this experience is the superbly crafted cabin.&nbsp;</p>

<p>If there are any issues at all with a car like this in India – and mind you, I’ve only driven the AMG GT (both coupe and convertible) at the track – it’s that they’re not exactly practical or usable on our roads. However, if you can afford a machine like this, just doing that occasional drive when everything comes together – the car, the road, and the weather – makes the experience totally worth it. And, that being the case, I would probably take the convertible over the coupe. After all, hearing that AMG V8 in full symphony with the top down is an experience of a lifetime. &nbsp;</p>

Mercedes-AMG GT Roadster Review, First Drive

The Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Roadster is essentially the drop top version of the suave AMG GT. As a result, this bonkers machine now deliver the stupendous AMG experience and the monstrous AMG soundtrack directly to your ears.

<p style="text-align: justify;"><em>How do you get a trifecta of treasures? Take one-part incredible vistas, throw in fast-flowing racetrack, and top it off with a world-beating sports car. But is the AMG GT a world-beating sport car – a 911 beater? We head half way across the planet to find out…</em></p>

<p>The Monterey Peninsula in California is one of the most beautiful parts of the planet – well, of those parts that I’ve had the pleasure of seeing anyway. So when you carve one of the most incredible racetracks in the world into the hills not far from the Pacific coast, you have the makings of a very special place indeed. All you need to infuse into the mix then – to have said ‘trifecta of treasures’ – is one of the most highly anticipated sports cars of the year. And, courtesy of Mercedes-AMG, that’s exactly what we had – the audacious Mercedes-AMG GT S!</p>

<p>The last time I visited Laguna Seca was over a decade ago. At the time, I remember thinking that I ought to heighten my senses so as to properly burn the details of that experience to memory. Well, that wasn’t really a problem – senses were easily heightened as I was driving a Formula Dodge. Any single-seat race car is the perfect machine in which to get a ground-level view of a track – especially one as flowing and scenic as Laguna Seca. The infamous corkscrew really is like being on a roller coaster, although it’s not actually that hard to get right. You do, however, have to trust the fact that the road will still be there when you turn-in – which falls away from you after a blind entry. But if the corkscrew was slightly underwhelming – only because you expect even more – the balance 3.6 kilometres easily make up for it by being challenging and enjoyable in equal measure.</p>

<p>But our tryst with the Mercedes-AMG GT S didn’t start at the track. It started a few hundred kilometres north – in the heart of downtown San Francisco, in the midst of morning rush hour. But senses were heightened then as well, since there was a long row of brightly coloured AMG GT’s lined up at the porch waiting for us to choose our flavour of the day. The first order of business, then, was to navigate through the labyrinth of one-way streets and make our way out of the city. But before that was the slight challenge of getting going in the first place! You see, the cabin of the AMG GT is beautifully crafted, and it’s every bit as special as a high-end sports car ought to be. I, for one, especially like the quartet of round AC vents bang in the centre of the dashboard. Meanwhile, a cascading centre console is home to two rows of buttons that are absolutely vital to the job at hand. The trouble is that the gear selector is small, and it’s relegated to one end of the centre console – which makes it somewhat awkwardly positioned. But none of that matters, because the minute you get into the hip-hugging sport seats and grasp the three-spoke alcantara steering wheel, you know that it’s going to be a very special drive indeed. You just know…<br />
Of course, it doesn’t hurt that – to my eye – the AMG GT is absolutely stunning. It’s elegant and arresting in equal measure. If the SLS AMG was a bit brash, a bit rough around the edges even – and outlandish with its look-at-me gullwing doors – the AMG GT is simply perfect. And the 911-esque C-pillar and haunches don’t hurt either. Funny that, since this AMG is aimed squarely at Zuffenhausen’s finest! But if it’s going to really take on the most famous sports car of all time – the 911 – then it better be good. Very very good!</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">As we made our way past San Francisco tourist attractions like Pier 39, we got a sense of just how usable the AMG would be on a daily basis. Visibility isn’t bad, but not as good as a 911. The ride isn’t bad either, but – again – not quite as comfortable for daily use as a 911. AMG’s tend to be quite firm, and this is no exception. Road noise is quite apparent too. But the steering is light, and the engine is amazingly tractable.</p>

<p>The engine is the soul of this machine – as well it should be in any sports car worth its salt. Fortunately, it’s a very good power unit. Yes, ‘very very good.’ The first AMG GT to hit the market next year – slated to reach our shores only by the second half of 2015 – will be the more powerful S version with a 4.0 litre twin-turbo V8 producing in excess of 500 horsepower and 650Nm of torque. The all-new engine is, essentially, two CLA AMG motors joined at the hip to produce a pretty formidable power unit. It has a hot V with the turbos located atop the two banks of cylinders. This leads to pretty straightforward plumbing, and, therefore, reduced lag. In fact, they’ve engineered some pretty intricate methods to ensure that the turbos produce instant response. And, by all accounts, they’ve succeeded.</p>

<p>The power delivery is seamless. Peak torque comes in at under 2,000rpm, while peak power reveals itself at over 6,000rpm. This, essentially, means that you get pinned to your seat every time you flex your right foot – at any speed, in any gear. And the gearbox is pretty good too. This was the Achilles’ heel of the SLS, but, fortunately, it’s been well and truly rectified in the GT. It can still be a little clunky at low speeds around town, but, on the whole, it’s right up there with the best gearboxes in the world. The sound from the engine is pretty good too. One of the biggest challenges thrown up by forced induction engines (other than throttle response) is generating an unfettered and pure exhaust note – an AMG hallmark! And so AMG, apparently, set up a sound studio specifically to tackle this issue. Let’s just say that it appears to be a job well done.</p>

<p>And so the drive down to the track was an enjoyable one – the vistas of the Pacific didn’t hurt of course. But it’s on the track that the AMG GT truly reveals its class. Put the car in Race mode, and the rev needle races towards the redline like a hungry bloodhound in search of deer. On the first lap, I even hit the limiter a couple of times – until I recalibrated my brain to account for the response from the engine. I do wish, though, that the AMG had a 911-esque central rev counter to help the driver keep a better eye on the tach – or, better yet, a head-up display, which would allow you to keep your eyes on the road at all times. Truth is, though, the gearbox is so good that you can actually leave it to its own devices. In Sport and Race, it’s so responsive to the needs of the driver that you don’t actually need to shift by yourself.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">But engine-gearbox apart, the real party trick of the GT is its chassis balance. If its lunacy you’re after, it’ll happily oblige I’m sure. We were, however, restricted to lead-and-follow laps behind a Mercedes DTM driver – at a pretty decent clip mind you – but we couldn’t really get up to any tyre shredding tomfoolery. In Race mode, though, the GT is incredible. It feels like a proper race car. Their tagline is ‘handcrafted by racers,’ and that certainly rings true after driving it on a track. Not only does it have a 47/53 weight-distribution, but it also has dynamic engine and transmission mounts that make sure the weight transfer is managed to near-perfection. These mounts – four of them – are filled with a magnetic hydraulic fluid, the viscosity of which is changed continuously by a current that’s passed through each one independently based on the driving conditions and chassis behaviour.</p>

<p>All of this trickery works to ensure that you have a car that feels completely neutral and planted at all times. The steering is incredibly sharp and precise, while being quite light and delicate at the same time. Unlike the 911 – which can still exhibit some mid-corner understeer – the GT turns-in extremely well and stays absolutely neutral through the corner. Get on the power at the exit, and the rear end adjusts under power just the right amount to enable you to shoot you out of the corner. Of course, you have gobs of power under your right foot – so you do have to live by the mantra that ‘discretion is the better part of valour.’ All said and done, though, this is one of the easiest cars to lap around a racetrack at speed that I’ve experienced in a long time. And Laguna Seca is no ordinary track. What’s more, the GT felt like it could do this all day. The ceramic brakes didn’t demonstrate even a hint of fade after multiple sessions. After experiencing the GT, you can only imagine the depths of R&amp;D and engineering that’s gone into creating this machine – the Jaguar F-Type feels like a Tonka toy in comparison.</p>

<p>I can’t help but think that the Mercedes-AMG GT S is a better track tool than the 911. But it’s going to take more than lap times to topple the Carrera’s 50-year legacy. Plus, having the engine swung out the back has an allure all its own. The majestically honed flat-six is a pretty special motor in its own right. The 911 is more usable every day as well. But it could be a victim of it’s own success. You see, it’s become the ubiquitous sports car of choice. And so, if it’s an alternative that you’re looking for, the AMG GT makes a very compelling case for itself. Yes, very very compelling! Mercedes has certainly endowed the AMG GT with all the ingredients to make it the 911-beater that they hope it’ll be…</p>
