    <h2>Mercedes-Benz G-Class Cabriolet: Here's What You Can Expect</h2><p>The prototype images suggest that the upcoming model stays true to the G-Class’s iconic, boxy silhouette. Signature elements such&nbsp;as the slab-sided doors with protective bars, the flat bonnet, upright proportions,&nbsp;and pronounced wheel arches all appear to be intact.     It’s rare for a car to win the coveted ‘Best of’ award by being understated, yet the Mercedes-Benz E450 does exactly that – an absolute masterclass in sleeper performance. At first glance, it seems like a standard E-Class – elegant and comfortable – and as our first drive review noted, its AMG Line cues are so subtle that if you blink, you might miss them. The 18-inch AMG wheels look small and uninspiring. This car doesn’t shout; it whispers. There are no aggressive wings or carbon-fibre splitters. And then you see it in action on the track – it clocked a lap time of 1:10.1 at the BIC. That’s not just fast – that’s staggering. This lap time is a testament to its chassis engineering, considering this is a long-wheelbase luxury sedan, not a lightweight sports car. <p>The secret lies in the ‘450’ badge. Beneath the unassuming exterior sits a formidable 3.0-litre inline-six turbocharged engine. Paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system, it produces 381bhp and 500Nm of torque, propelling the car from 0 – 100km/h in just 4.5 seconds. It’s a big, heavy car, but the way it masks all that mass when you floor the throttle is mesmerising. Power delivery is smooth and assured, climbing beautifully up the rev range. While it does feel slightly more front-heavy than the four-cylinder E200, the 4Matic all-wheel-drive system manages the power with such competence that it remains balanced. It’s not only quick in a straight line but also tackles corners with unexpected poise, only showing its limits if you attempt an aggressive, high-speed direction change.</p>

<p>But performance alone didn’t seal the E450’s victory. It’s a ‘Best of 2025’ winner because it’s a complete package, one that refuses to compromise. It offers AMG-level excitement for the driver—fronted by the full MBUX Hyperscreen and a 4D Burmester sound system—while spoiling rear passengers with indulgent comfort. This is, after all, a long-wheelbase cabin with reclining seats, electronic sunblinds, and S-Class-like legroom. The hydro-pneumatic Airmatic suspension is the heart of its dual nature. This system is the true enabler, providing a cushioning effect over potholes that no rival can match, while simultaneously preventing the body roll that would otherwise plague a car of this size on a fast lap. Mercedes-Benz E-Class LWB Wins Car of the Year - autoX Awards 2025

The Mercedes-Benz E450 effortlessly fuses supreme luxury with jaw-dropping performance. It’s this breathtaking duality that left the jury unanimous in its praise.

As longtime readers of the magazine will know, I’ve been an unabashed G-Wagon fan for decades. The G is one of those perplexing machines that don’t really make any sense, but at the same time, they are the best choices you can make. Why, after all, would anyone need a twin-turbo V8 engine in a car that was designed to go off-road and has three differential locks to make sure that it can tackle any terrain? Or why would anyone need side-exit exhausts that make an absolutely beautiful racket when you rev the car?</p><p>And yet, that’s exactly what makes the G so special. The mechanical feel, the sheer solidity of its construction – well, it’s all intoxicating, really. Take the doors, for instance. As our instructor at the G Experience centre joked, ‘You can’t slam a G-Wagon’s door too hard – you simply need to use your strength to close it.’ When it shuts, with a solid sound of the central locking, it feels like you’ve sealed a vault full of precious jewels.</p>

      
    
      
    


<h2>A Glimpse into History</h2>

<p>Before participating in the G-Class experience, we toured the assembly line that’s been manufacturing every single G-Wagon since 1979. In fact, the G is exclusively built by Magna for Mercedes at the Graz plant – the only facility in the world to do so from day one.</p><p>

    </p><p>And we witnessed the whole plant and the processes through which a G-Wagon is built. Watching all of it in motion was fascinating.  From various exterior colours to different interior trims, each G-Wagon feels like it’s made to a personal brief rather than a production quota. The pride that Graz takes in being home to the production of the G-Wagon is palpable – locals even boast about custom-built versions, like the ‘Popemobile’ based on the G580 electric, which was created for Pope Francis.</p>

      
    
      
    


<h2>Proof is in the Pudding</h2>

<p>But the real magic began at the G-Class Experience Centre, tucked away in a corner of Graz Airport. It’s here that the G’s mettle can be tested across an array of brutal challenges. Before we hit the course, though, we were greeted by an extraordinary sight – the original 1979 G-Wagon encased in the world’s largest single piece of amber. Created for the 2018 Detroit Auto Show, it weighs a mind-boggling 44 tonnes – a fitting tribute to a machine that has become a legend in its own right.</p><p>

    </p><p>After a quick briefing, it was time to get serious and drive the G through challenging conditions and see how it fares. Behind the wheel of the G 500 and G 450d, we tackled the articulation course first. With the centre differential locked, the G simply drove through obstacles with ease. Next came the side-incline test. We tilted the G up to a dizzying 36 degrees, the maximum Mercedes claims it can handle under standard test conditions. And yes, it felt every bit as dramatic as it sounds.</p>

      
    
      
    


<h2>Flooded Roads?</h2>

<p>The next driving challenge was perhaps the most relatable one for Indian conditions – deep-water wading. It effectively mimicked the monsoon chaos that we witness every year in cities like Delhi, Gurugram, and Mumbai. We drove through 700mm of standing water, which effectively demonstrated how the G-Wagon might just be the perfect car for anyone living on Gurugram’s Golf Course Road. Despite the water level, all we had to do was slot the G in gear – it simply glided through the water as if it were a puddle.</p><p>

    </p><p>After the off-roading and water wading, things got a bit more interesting and challenging. We switched to the G580 EV and attempted some serious climbs and drops that were designed to showcase the its off-road capabilities. We began with a climb on an 80% incline, which the G handled effortlessly, except for some traction and slippage issues caused by the rubber deposits left by other cars. I took another run at it, and this time, I managed to get it to climb the incline without any issue. Immediately after came a 70% descent – nearly vertical – and though it looked terrifying, the G’s hill descent system handled it immaculately.</p><p>

    From there, we switched to the G63 AMG and experienced its dynamic capabilities on a stretch of the airport’s tarmac. We tested its acceleration, braking, and even performed the Elk Test manoeuvre. It was a thrilling experience to push such a large, heavy machine to its limits and see how it behaves. Add to all this the V8’s amazing exhaust note, and it was pure mechanical theatre.</p>

      
    
      
    


      
    
      
    


<h2>Reality Check</h2>

<p>While we couldn’t tackle the legendary Schöckl Mountain course this time, it was still an amazing experience. In fact, the G-Class Experience Centre has plenty to offer for both customers and enthusiasts. From the off-road course to the G-Class EV experience and the dynamic section with the G63 AMG, there was no shortage of adrenaline. But just when we thought the day was done, the team at the G Experience Centre had a surprise in store – a ride with one of their instructors across the entire course.</p><p>

<p>Now, since all the instructors have a racing background, we should’ve known what was coming. Still, nothing could have prepared us for what followed. Our instructor took the same course we’d spent all day carefully crawling through – water wading, inclines, descents, and the dynamic section – and drove it like a full-blown rally car. He blasted through water wading sections at nearly 100km/h, flew up and down inclines we had tiptoed over at 6km/h, and even drifted the G-Wagon through the tarmac section while taking U-turns, casually chatting the entire time. He did it all and in style!</p><p>

<p>After spending the day feeling rather proud of my on- and off-road driving skills, that ride was a brutal, and hilarious, reality check. Still, getting to drive one my favourite cars, experience its full range of abilities, and live the G-Wagon life – even for a day – was an experience that I will never forget. And given the chance, I’d do it all over again in a heartbeat.

As a lifelong G-Wagon fan, visiting its birthplace in Graz, Austria, to see how it’s manufactured and to experience its capabilities was an opportunity of a lifetime.

This marks a 36 per cent growth over the same period last year. A significant part of this performance came during the Navratri festival, when the brand sold around 2,500 units in just nine days, its best-ever result for the period. The car holds significant historical value for motorsport followers, marking an important moment in the Brazilian driver’s early career. Senna took delivery of the sedan in October 1985, shortly after impressing at the 1984 Nürburgring Race of Champions, where he drove a similar 190 E to victory against established world champions. His example was finished in Smoke Silver Metallic with a black leather interior, remaining in factory specification to this day.</p>

Senna used the vehicle regularly as his daily driver, covering around 41,000km over nearly two years before parting with it in 1987. That same year he signed with McLaren, moved to Monaco, and began the next stage of his Formula 1 journey.</p>
<h2>1985 Mercedes-Benz 190 E: Technical Details</h2>
<p>The 190 E 2.3-16 represented a high-performance version of the Mercedes W201. It carried a 2.3-litre four-cylinder engine tuned for greater output, supported by a limited-slip differential and suspension upgrades aimed at sharper handling. Competing directly with the BMW M3, the car was well regarded among enthusiasts of the era. The example offered at auction retains its original specification and comes with service documentation from the period of Senna’s ownership.

Built on the dedicated MB.EA platform, this model is designed from the ground up as a pure EV. It replaces the EQE SUV and goes up against key rivals like the BMW iX3, showing Mercedes’ clear focus on expanding its electric range. The exterior of the Mercedes GLC EV brings in a new design identity. The Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW 5 Series have been long-time rivals, but in their latest long-wheelbase avatars, the debate gets even more interesting.

<p><em>As Mercedes revamps its SUV portfolio, the ML is rechristened as the GLE. Siddharth Vinayak Patankar tests it to tell you just what’s changed.</em></p>

<p>It’s no secret that the SUV remains the flavour of the season – no matter which market you look at. Of course, the success of SUVs has been largely dependent on their affordability. But it was also about their ease of use, or lack of it that kept some buyers away. Now days SUVs increasingly drive like cars, while maintaining the bulk – or at least the height and proportion – of an off-roader. But who goes off-road really, right?</p>

<p>It’s these observations, and the fact that its two compatriots have been well ahead in the SUV game, that prompted Mercedes-Benz to redefine its global portfolio. It was time to have SUVs in various shapes and sizes, from the very compact GLA, a much-needed global rival to the Q5, the GLC, and a reincarnation of its ML-Class – the new GLE-Class. For the uninitiated, Mercedes-Benz has decided that it’ll follow a uniform nomenclature across its portfolio. So, while the primary sedans will be the CLA, C, E and S-Class, the corresponding sized SUVs will now be GLA, GLC (the old GLK name is gone), GLE (replacing the ML) and GLS (instead of just GL). The legendary G-Wagon will retain its name – after all, that’s where the G has come from for all the SUVs anyway.</p>

<p>Now that I’ve bored you suitably with all that background, let me get straight to the new GLE. The ML was due for a makeover anyway, so the timing to introduce the GLE was perfect. It was also time for Mercedes-Benz to have a BMW X6 rival, so with the facelift also comes the coupé body style of the GLE.</p>

<p>Now I have to admit that the coupé bodystyle isn’t for me. But BMW sold 260,000 units of the first generation of the X6, and the second generation, which has been around a few months, is adding to that impressive tally. And so it’s clear that Mercedes-Benz and Audi need to get in on the action. Mercedes-Benz has beaten Audi to it, and has also declared plans to offer an X4 rival – the GLC Coupé. But never mind that for now. If you saw Jurassic World, the car driven by Bryce Dallas Howard is the GLE Coupé.</p>

<p>I have to say that it’s definitely better proportioned and nicer looking than the X6. The GLE Coupé almost looks like a cross-sedan at first glance, although the rear is trying a bit too hard to be as sexy as the S-Coupé. The problem it that the boot release is housed at the rear bumper. But the reverse camera being housed beneath the Mercedes Star (that flips open when the camera is in use) is quite clever!</p>

<p>I tested the GLE 450 AMG Coupé, but not the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 Coupé. This means that the car carries AMG trim, but not an AMG engine – which I think is the way to go in India too. That’s to say keep the AMG trim line standard for India, since the Coupé will only be a direct import anyway.</p>

<p>At any rate, the 450 is no meek machine. The car punches out 367 horses and a peak torque of 520Nm kicks in as low as 1,800rpm – with a nice run all the way to 4,000rpm. The 9-speed gearbox is something new from Mercedes-Benz, and it was on the Coupé that I first got to experience it. And it certainly delivers the goods. It downshifts very quickly, and is fun to use with the paddle shift.</p>

<p>The Coupé has a different drive feel over the SUV, with a very distinct character. It’s quick, nimble, and has a more car-like feel for sure. The petrol V6 is powerful, but its real character comes alive only when you put the car into Sport Plus mode. That’s also when the exhaust note come alive with some loud pops and crackles. The gear changes are really nice and quick, so you get exactly the kind of performance that you want from the car. It is fast, but not necessarily as sporty as I’d like. It doesn’t have that slight extra stiffness of the steering or suspension like the new X6. But I think the focus of the Coupé is very different, as it’s not really trying to be very sporty. The whole idea here really seems to be about pampering the buyer – and so it’s the cabin of the Coupé that really impresses.</p>

<p>And that’s also the USP of the new GLE family as a whole. This is what will make people sit up and take notice, the fact that the new range is indeed closer to being the E-Class of SUVs. The interiors are a class apart, and on the GLE Coupé is where this is especially pronounced. The car is luxurious, well appointed and sports all the bells, whistles and gadgets buyers today demand. The quilted leather seats and door panels are especially opulent.</p>

<p>It’s a good differentiator to carry into the Indian market too. After all, the GLE family will need to now take on two all-new cars that will be trying very hard to establish themselves as the benchmark of this segment – the 2nd generations of the Volvo XC90 and Audi Q7. And don’t forget the BMW X5 and X6 either. The Coupé should grace the Mercedes-Benz stand at the Delhi Auto Expo in February with a launch a few months later.</p>

<p>But the GLE SUV will arrive much sooner – to really be able to clash with the aforementioned rivals. If anything, the India launch may well coincide with that of the new Q7. The new GLE is will retain its 250 and 350 CDI nomenclature for the two diesel engine variants, which will both come to India. And, yes, that means the same engines – but we do get the new 9-speed auto gearbox, of course. The 250 will continue to give Mercedes-Benz India the bulk of its sales, and so this is the car that I chose to spend most of my time with – though I did also drive the 3-litre GLE 400 too.</p>

<p>At first glance, the car looks almost exactly the same as the ML-250 CDI. The facelift is a minor one – with the bumpers, head and taillights and outside mirrors getting a rework. Step inside, and it’s a different story, as the GLE now tries harder to be more luxurious. It may not be as swanky as the Coupé, but the cabin is very well finished and looks more high end and plush than before. A lot of buyers in India are especially going to like that.</p>

<p>The 250 is fairly familiar under the hood, but now offers better torque at the low end. The engine has been retuned to fit the new transmission, and that makes it more refined than before. And it moves quickly enough, given that it’s still fairly heavy – and the 250 is the smaller of the two engines. The engine punches out 204bhp, and has a very generous 500Nm of torque. You do need to work the gears a bit to get it going at times, but for the most part it’s an extremely comfortable and pleasant drive. The transmission drops gears quickly if you want quick access to power, and the long gearing gives you great cruising capability.</p>

<p>Mercedes-Benz claims that the GLE is pretty handy away from smooth tarmac as well, so I ditched the motorway for some off-road terrain. Here, I switched cars and jumped into the 333bhp GLE 400. Yes the petrol does instantly offer a different character. But I won’t expand on that too much, since this variant won’t make it to our shores anyway. It was quite a superb off-road track that had been set up for us, and the rainy weather made it even more fun thanks to some slush and mud adding to the challenge. Now, if you&nbsp;look&nbsp;at the BMW X5 there is some&nbsp;sense&nbsp;of off-road capability, but it’s more about on-road performance. The same is true with the recently&nbsp;introduced second generation Audi Q7. With the GLE, the conversation has gone smartly towards tough off-roading. And, even though I know that a lot of buyers are probably never going to venture far from tarmac, it’s still a good differentiation nevertheless.</p>

<p>The GLE took to the rather arduous track with a fair amount of ease – nimble on upward and downward gradients, and also being able to traverse through uneven surfaces and ditches with ease. The car can gain height by as much as 90mm, has hill descent control, and lets you judge the terrain type and select the appropriate settings for throttle, suspension and engine performance. The car with me had the off-road package on it though – which will, most likely, not be offered in India.</p>

<p>The GLE will arrive around Diwali, and I expect Mercedes-Benz to offer the 3-litre 258bhp GLE 350d and 204bhp 250d from the get-go. And while the company is also likely to declare a CKD (local assembling) plan, expect prices to be marginally higher than the existing ML.</p>
