<p>After years of discussions, India and the European Union have finally agreed on a free trade deal, and this one has caught the attention of car buyers and auto industry watchers. The reason is simple. Europe builds many of the cars Indians want, while India remains one of the toughest markets in the world for imports due to high duties. The India–EU FTA aims to ease trade between both sides by cutting tariffs and simplifying regulations. For the auto sector, this could slowly change how European cars enter India. The agreement is expected to take effect from 2027. Under the newly concluded India–EU Free Trade Agreement, these tariffs will come down to 10 per cent under an annual quota of 250,000 vehicles. The deal, finalised after nearly two decades of negotiations, sets a clear framework for European car imports while keeping volumes under control.</p><p>One thing worth keeping in mind is that the lower tariff applies only to cars built in Europe. If a model is manufactured outside the EU, it will not get the benefit even if it wears a European badge. Take BMW for example. The M2 is built in Mexico, while the XM and X6 are manufactured in the USA, which means these models will not fall under the reduced duty structure.</p><h2>What does this Mean for Car Prices in India</h2><p>Lower import duties will bring down the landing cost, especially for fully imported models. Final pricing will still depend on brand strategy, exchange rates and state taxes. So while price drops may not happen overnight, the gap between imported and locally built cars is will shrink over time, giving buyers more choice and better value in the premium segment.</p><h2>Carmakers may Rethink their India Strategy</h2><p>The trade deal could push European brands to take a fresh look at their India plans after the tariff drop. With lower duties, it becomes easier to bring in more models and rethink pricing for the market. Some manufacturers may still prefer local assembly to keep costs in check, but the FTA gives brands more room when planning investments and future launches.</p><h2>Local Manufacturing and Suppliers Stay in Focus</h2><p>Indian component makers may face added competition, but there is also an opportunity. If more brands increase assembly operations, demand for&nbsp;locally sourced parts could rise. Suppliers that meet EU standards may even gain export access. Safeguard clauses in the agreement allow the government to step in if imports grow too fast, keeping local manufacturing protected as the deal is rolled out in phases.</p>

Under the India-EU free trade agreement, import duties on cars and bikes from BMW, Ducati, Mercedes-Benz and Audi will fall from 110% to 10% under a 250000 vehicle quota.

    <strong>The E-Class has always been the mainstay of your portfolio. With the new E450 also being a driver’s car, are more customers reaching for the keys themselves?</strong>
</p>

<p>Absolutely! The demand for the 450 specifically has been surprising – it’s nearly a 60:40 split between the E200 and the E450. Even the older generation of customers want to get behind the wheel now. The E450 ticks all the boxes, because it offers the perfect mix – it’s amazing behind the wheel but remains supremely comfortable in the backseat as well. It’s the sign of an evolving market where the price delta isn’t a barrier to engine class or size – customers simply want the best option available.</p>

<p><strong>Diesel still makes up a large chunk of your sales and is expected to rise further following the GST revision. How difficult is it to plan the engine mix in such a dynamic environment?</strong></p>

<p>It is definitely challenging. We honestly thought diesel demand would decline, yet it remains close to 40% of our total sales. With the recent GST adjustments offering Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) advantages, demand has surged even further. We have to be technology-agnostic – we have diesel, gasoline, and electric options. The key is agility. We need to plan with resilience, because fluctuations in policy or geopolitical issues can shift market sentiment and dynamics instantly. If we didn’t have the stock prepared for the recent rally, we would have missed capturing this market opportunity.</p>



<p><strong>There is a sense that German manufacturers are going back to their heritage to differentiate themselves from new competitors. Do you agree?</strong></p>

<p>You have to go back to your strengths. The German auto industry is known for cars that make you feel good and invoke a sense of passion. We decided to return to our core when it comes to styling, with iconic, timeless design. On the other hand, we are focusing on software-defined cars. It’s a combination of returning to iconic design while integrating cutting-edge technology and a superior user experience that sets the benchmark. If we don’t offer that unique experience, we will lose our distinct positioning.</p>

<p><strong>EV sales as a percentage of the total industry have dipped recently. Does the government need to do more to push EVs?</strong></p>

<p>The government has done its bit with a 5% GST rate compared to the much higher rates for combustion engines. For us, EV penetration is stable at around 9-10%. However, adoption depends heavily on value and the stability of the ecosystem. We have seen that any change in state-level taxation or incentives drastically alters the TCO equation. Factors like residual value and acquisition cost also create distortions. If the value proposition distorts, customer preference shifts immediately.</p>

<p><strong>You recently released the Mercedes-Benz-Hurun Wealth Report. What was the rationale behind that?</strong></p>

<p>In the last 30 years, we’ve sold around 2,00,000 cars. From 2014 to 2024, our growth correlated perfectly with India’s GDP growth. This index helps coordinate where Mercedes-Benz can grow next. It’s about mapping the rising wealth in India to potential market expansion and ensuring we are present where wealth is migrating.</p>

<p><strong>Finally, what can we expect from Mercedes-Benz in 2026?</strong></p>

<p>We always challenge the status quo. To stay on the volume side of the spectrum, we have to innovate and not just look at the money. Next year, we will continue our product offensive. While some models are currently unavailable due to global supply constraints, we expect to get them in the first quarter of next year. This comes after recent GST updates, which had&nbsp;lowered prices on several models, including the A200d and GLC 300, as part of the&nbsp;company’s effort to pass on tax benefits to customers. </p><p><a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/mercedes-benz/">Mercedes-Benz</a> cites&nbsp;rising production costs, higher logistics expenses, inflation, and a strong&nbsp;Euro-INR exchange rate as key reasons for the revision.&nbsp;While the exact price hike for each model remains undisclosed, the company states that it will&nbsp;differ will vary across the range, based on whether a model is locally&nbsp;produced or imported.</p><p>Commenting on the upcoming price hike,&nbsp;Santosh Iyer, Managing Director &amp; CEO, Mercedes-Benz India, said&nbsp;'Currency headwinds have persisted longer than we anticipated this year, with the Euro consistently&nbsp;trading over the INR 100 mark. <p>When I first drove the <a href="https://www.autox.com/reviews/car-reviews/mercedes-benz-gls-review-first-drive-108382/">GLS</a> a couple of years ago, I don’t think my thoughts were something to the tune of, ‘Well, this doesn’t seem luxurious enough’. But, obviously, people at Maybach disagree with me, or rather their idea of luxury is something completely different. So, they took the perfectly good GLS, and made it literally a palace on wheels, especially for rear-seat passengers, but also kept a surprise for the driver. I spent a couple of days with the GLS 600 Maybach to find out exactly how the top 1% of the population like to spend their money.</p>

<p><strong>Blingin’</strong></p>

<p>I’ll be honest; when I first saw pictures of the <a href="https://www.autox.com/news/car-news/mercedes-maybach-gls-600-4matic-launched-in-india-109557/">GLS Maybach</a>, ‘elegant’ was not the word that came to my mind. And that impression hasn’t changed when I saw the car in the flesh. You see, I prefer cars that are subdued, and the Maybach, with its chrome-laden exterior, is the antithesis of that. However, what you can’t deny is that it grabs eyeballs like no other SUV. With its massive chrome grille and air dam, matched by the chrome on the side skirts, automatic footstep, which pulls out every time you open a door, and massive 22-inch wheels, the Maybach is an absolute spectacle. All this suits its image, for if you’re buying one, you’re naturally successful and don’t mind people knowing about your success. What’s more, the inherent elegance of the GLS’ design also shines through. It might be blinged-out, but there’s no denying that the GLS is a handsome car with a massive road presence.</p>

<p><b>Palace on Wheels</b></p>

<p>The interior, though, is totally up my alley. The details on the car are simply gorgeous – right from the beautiful inlaid wood on the dash and other surfaces to the amazing seats, all of which feature heating/cooling and massage functions - and it feels hand-built. The basic cabin layout of the GLS has also been changed – the third row has been removed and the 2nd row has been pushed back for enhanced space for passengers. You also get a 26-speaker Burmester sound system with a subwoofer, which sounds brilliant. The best way to spend time in the GLS is to be in the rear seat, listening to your favourite tunes – hell, it might even be worth getting stuck in a traffic jam just to enjoy that experience.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Of course, there are a ton of customisation options available – right from the paint job, which can be special colours or even two-tone combinations like our test car, to the interior colour combinations. Frankly, customisation options alone can cost you north of `50 lakh. But then again, if you’re splurging on an uber-SUV, you might as well spec it to suit your own style.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Real Surprise</strong></p>

<p>Now, when you think of an uber-luxury vehicle, the idea of massive performance is not something that comes to mind. And this is where the GLS changes the game, with a rocket of a power plant. The GLS is powered by the 4.0-litre twin-turbo AMG V8, which I’ve loved in various iterations. In this tune, it produces a massive 550bhp. But the real headlining figure is the torque this beast of an engine generates – 730Nm is just from the engine. And when you factor in the boost from the 48V system, the total figure reached to 980Nm! Now, that much torque and power mean that the GLS can move at a pace that no <a href="https://www.autox.com/suv-cars-in-india/" target="_blank">SUV</a> this large and heavy should be capable of moving at. In short, the acceleration is simply sensational – maintaining high speeds is ridiculously easy. And while you do have to be careful about managing its massive size, you don’t have to worry about covering hundreds of kilometres on the highway – it can do that in a heartbeat. And despite the 22-inch wheels, its ride is actually quite good.</p>

<p>Sure, there are a couple of things that could be better. In regular mode, the gearbox can be occasionally a tad lazy in traffic, but other than that I really couldn’t find any fault with the GLS. Of course, there’s the matter of the price – in the next lot, when it reaches India, it’s expected to cost around the ₹2.75 crore mark, before options. But then again, in the rarefied segment that it competes in, I don’t think customers would worry about EMIs. And while I still can’t come to terms with the way it looks, I love the interior and the luxury it offers – and the performance is just the cherry on the cake. &nbsp;</p>
