    It’s raining performance cars in India this year, isn’t it? Volkswagen started the trend with the Golf GTI earlier this year; its sister brand, Škoda, followed with the Octavia RS, and now Mini India wants a slice of the action with the all-new Countryman JCW.</p>

<p>Unlike the VW Group twins, the Mini is more expensive — but it also offers more poke, more practicality, and, of course, greater snob value. It is, after all, a luxury badge. And oh, it’s an SUV — the country’s most-loved automotive format right now. The question is, does it live up to the promise? We had a brief interaction with the latest (and largest) Mini at the Buddh International Circuit during its launch, and here’s why the Countryman JCW deserves your attention.</p>





<h2>Mini Countryman JCW Design &amp; Styling: The Works</h2>

<p>When John Cooper Works sprinkles its magic on a Mini, they go the whole nine yards — every component gets re-engineered to bring out the brand’s sporty alter ego. Now, the current-gen Countryman isn’t exactly a looker if you ask me. At 4.4 metres long, it’s hardly “mini”, and it tries a bit too hard to look SUV-ish when, in essence, it’s more of a jacked-up hatchback or a crossover at best. That said, the JCW makeover adds real intent. Plus, in its special British Racing Green, Legend Grey, and Midnight Black colour options, it looks properly menacing.</p><p>

<h2>Mini Countryman JCW Interior &amp; Practicality Review</h2>

<p>Step inside and you’re greeted by a cabin drenched in JCW flair. There are electrically adjustable sport seats, a JCW steering wheel with aluminium paddles, the signature 9.4-inch circular OLED infotainment display, a panoramic sunroof, Level 1 ADAS, a head-up display, and a Harman Kardon audio system — all standard.</p><p>

The rear compartment has generous space for two adults, and the sliding rear bench (by up to 130mm) helps free up more legroom or boot volume (500 litres as standard) as needed. Overall fit-and-finish levels feel premium.</p>

<h2>Mini Countryman JCW Engine, Performance &amp; Handling</h2>

<p>Under the hood sits a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbo-petrol that churns out 296bhp and 400Nm. Power is channelled to all four wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic and Mini’s ALL4 AWD system. It’s got the go, for sure, but what I don’t like is how it pretends to be going faster than it actually is, for the piped-in exhaust note dulls the authenticity. The brakes, however, are exceptional, offering strong bite and confidence to dive deep into corners.</p><p>

<h2>Mini Countryman JCW Price, Verdict &amp; Should You Buy It?</h2>

<p>The Countryman JCW is aimed at keen drivers who primarily want three things — sports-car-like performance &amp; handling, SUV-like practicality, and Mini’s iconic badge (&amp; shape). It nails all three with surprising ease. Priced at ₹64.90 lakh (ex-showroom), it isn’t cheap, but it packs in performance, personality, and usability in a way few others in the segment do.</p><p>

<p><strong>autoX Awards 2024:</strong> Among all the vehicles available in the country, Minis are widely regarded for their X-factor and fun-to-drive quotient. However, Mini India is now aiming to add efficiency to the list with the introduction of the Countryman EV. This model is targeted directly at enthusiasts, striving to be an SUV that can truly claim to do it all.</p>

<p>In India, the electric Mini Countryman is available only in the single-motor variant. This motor generates 204 horsepower and 250Nm of torque. When you press the throttle, the Countryman accelerates smoothly and in a linear manner, with the speedometer displaying a steady, progressive rush. While it may not be the quickest car on the road, I would describe its performance as brisk. Mini India’s claimed 0 to 100 km/h time of 8.6 seconds is an accurate representation of how it drives. It’s not fast enough to overwhelm beginners, but it does offer an enjoyable experience nonetheless.</p>

<p>The Countryman EV offers what Mini calls ‘experiences’, but only three of them – Core, Efficient, and Go-Kart – actually have any impact on the driving dynamics of the car. Core provides the best balance between performance and efficiency; Go-Kart enhances steering and throttle response, and Efficient…well, it’s self-explanatory, isn’t it? Despite sacrificing battery capacity, the Go-Kart delivers the fastest and liveliest driving experience.</p>

<p>The Countryman EV’s 66.45kWh battery pack offers a claimed range of 462km on a single charge. In real-world conditions, our test drive yielded a range of about 380km, which, in my opinion, is not bad at all. Although the Countryman EV isn’t the fastest amongst the cars we have, its handling is remarkable for its size and weight, even though the motor’s performance is not. While it doesn’t feel fast, it holds its line effortlessly through corners. The steering is incredibly responsive, although it does feel slightly artificially weighted. All in all, the Mini Countryman EV might just be the most practical and well-rounded Mini for the family, blending efficiency, handling, and the brand’s signature driving enjoyment into one attractive package.</p>

<p><strong>autoX Awards 2024:</strong>&nbsp;‘Is it still a Mini?’ – it’s a question we ask ourselves every time we get behind the wheel of a new <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/mini/">Mini</a>. And every single time, our answer is an emphatic NO! Take the latest Cooper S for instance. At nearly 3.9m long, you have to be barking mad to call it a Mini. Its name is a bit of a misnomer in the current day and age because, frankly, it’s as BIG as they come. However, beyond the exterior dimensions, you can say the essence of a Mini is not completely lost. But, is it fast and, more importantly, engaging enough?</p>

<p>With its 2.0-litre turbo petrol sending just over 200 horses and 300Nm of torque to the front wheels, it’s plenty fast for what it is. It can clock 0 – 100km/h in about 6.5 seconds, so it does pack a punch. The 8-speed dual-clutch auto plays along brilliantly, resulting in seamless and lighting-quick shifts, especially when you put the pedal to the metal.</p>

<p>On the racetrack, it’s a lot of fun – handling is precise, grip levels are stellar, and the driving ergonomics and outward visibility are phenomenal. That said, the whole experience feels somewhat synthetic. Sure, it handles well, but it lacks the go-kart-like feel of older Minis. Instead, it feels safe, secure, and a bit tame. There’s barely any movement. Not saying it’s not fun, but playful, it is not. Similarly, the noises you hear inside the cabin are all piped-in sounds from the speakers and not genuine exhaust notes. And while that big round infotainment touchscreen is amazing to operate, it’s a little too gimmicky, especially with its ‘Wohoo’ in Go-Kart mode – a bit too Gen Z for our tastes, to be honest.</p>

<p>Our biggest gripe with the new Cooper S, however, is its lack of driver engagement. For instance, there are no paddle shifters or manual shifts. So, all you have to do is just put your foot down and let the car do its things. It’s like being a part of a fun school project without having an active role – you might win the competition, but the victory would feel hollow.</p>

<p>That said, the Cooper S – with its neo-retro styling, funky colours, modern tech and exquisite interior – makes for a fantastic daily driver for someone who wants to have an icon in their garage and loves driving fast but isn’t necessarily looking for the visceral engagement of a true driver’s car.</p>

<p><strong><em>Does the XL sized Clubman stay true to the Mini DNA?</em></strong></p>

<p>Think Mini and it is easy to picture a curvy little hatchback with retro-modern appeal that is quick and fun to drive. But the latest one to enter the Indian market is anything but little. In fact, the Cooper S Clubman is the longest Mini ever made. But is it really a ‘Mini’?</p>

<p>Before we get to answering that question, let's first shed some light on some aspects that are definitely not mini (pun intended) in the Clubman. First, it's dimensions. A quick look at Minis through the ages and you will notice that they have only gotten larger. At 4,253mm, this one is the longest of them all. And it isn't just the length. The front and rear wheels are 2,670mm apart which makes it’s wheelbase almost as long as the Skoda Octavia. And that brings us to the second aspect which sets its apart from the other Minis – the space.</p>

<p>With the kind of leg and knee room that the Clubman has, I wouldn't mind sitting in the back seat of this Mini. That being said, I wouldn't want to be the third passenger at the back. The seat back is contoured well for support but will only be comfortable for two adults at best. And then there is the transmission tunnel and the rear air con vent eating into the space of the third passenger. The rear seat is also a bit too upright for my liking – a little more reclined would have made it absolutely spot on!</p>

<p>The front seats manage to achieve that perfection thanks to good support for your torso, adjustable lumbar support and extendable under thigh support. For the price that it comes at, we wish it came fitted with electrically adjustable front seats. Space aside, the interior is typically Mini with the signature round instrumentation, door handles and the touchscreen infotainment. Quality is on par with what you'd expect from a Mini. Visibility for the most part is good, the joint of the barn doors does obstruct vision, especially while reversing. This could have been easily fixed by installing a reversing camera but sadly the Clubman just makes do with parking sensors.</p>

<p>From behind the wheel is where the real Mini experience begins. The Clubman’s direct injection 2.0-litre motor has been fitted with a turbocharger and BMW’s VANOS variable valve timing tech. Its peak torque output of 280Nm from as low as 1,250rpm makes it extremely eager. Going hard on the throttle from standstill you feel a bit of torque steer but that's just the sign of how enthusiastic this engine is. As the tacho goes past the 2,400rpm mark you feel a spike in its performance and it doesn't lose steam right up till it's red-line. It doesn't take much for the engine to please you - whether you drive sanely or even when you want to go bonkers pushing it to the limit.</p>

<p>The Mini Clubman comes with three driving modes that alter the responsiveness of the steering, engine and transmission. In the Green mode, the throttle feels a bit heavy but the engine is by no means lethargic. But it is in the Sport mode that the Clubman really impresses. An exciting drive and the the sweet soft exhaust note just lures you into digging your right foot deeper. There's also the Mid mode that finds the middle ground between the two – ideal for highway duties. The 8-speed gearbox shifts briskly but just not as well as dual-clutch transmissions. That said, it surely doesn't play spoil sport to the engine’s enthusiastic manners.</p>

<p>Being a Mini for a family man, the Clubman has been marginally softened compared to its smaller siblings. This makes it the most comfortable car in Mini’s product portfolio. The smaller bumps are addressed in a rather civilised manner but the larger bumps do send an angry thud into the cabin. Given the low profile tyres you might even run the risk of rim damage in case you hit a large pothole at high speeds. While the Clubman is slightly softer than the rest of the Mini range, by no means does it feel timid in the handling department. Turn-ins are sharp and the wider track ensures that the feels planted even when cornering at high speeds. Of course it doesn't feel as surefooted as the 3-door Cooper, but it promises to be more fun than most other cars in its price range.</p>

<p>Finally moving on to the most debatable characteristic of the Clubman – it’s design. While the Clubman does have the curvy design cues and the retro appeal that is typical of the brand, it is by no means compact like its siblings. And that is sure to attract mixed reactions from people. Some might just love the way the Mini design has been incorporated in a larger car, some other loyalists would argue that Mini should stick to compact offerings. But there is no denying that there are a lot of design elements that scream Mini – the round headlights, hexagonal grille and the flat roofline to name a few.</p>

<p>Every once in a while, large companies move away from the norm to develop something that is not typical of them. Just the way Apple did with the iPhone, Mini has done it with the Clubman. But the trick is to stay true to your core values and that is something that Mini seems to have managed quite easily. The Clubman looks like a Mini, drives like one too and now also comes with a high dose of practicality. So to answer the question we set out to find – yes, the Clubman is a ‘Mini’ alright, but it surely isn't the one that you will picture in your head when you hear someone say Mini.</p>
