<p>Unlike the VW Group twins, the Mini is more expensive — but it also offers more poke, more practicality, and, of course, greater snob value. It is, after all, a luxury badge. And oh, it’s an SUV — the country’s most-loved automotive format right now. The question is, does it live up to the promise? We had a brief interaction with the latest (and largest) Mini at the Buddh International Circuit during its launch, and here’s why the Countryman JCW deserves your attention.</p>





<h2>Mini Countryman JCW Design &amp; Styling: The Works</h2>

<p>When John Cooper Works sprinkles its magic on a Mini, they go the whole nine yards — every component gets re-engineered to bring out the brand’s sporty alter ego. Now, the current-gen Countryman isn’t exactly a looker if you ask me. At 4.4 metres long, it’s hardly “mini”, and it tries a bit too hard to look SUV-ish when, in essence, it’s more of a jacked-up hatchback or a crossover at best. That said, the JCW makeover adds real intent. Plus, in its special British Racing Green, Legend Grey, and Midnight Black colour options, it looks properly menacing.</p><p>

<p>Step inside and you’re greeted by a cabin drenched in JCW flair. There are electrically adjustable sport seats, a JCW steering wheel with aluminium paddles, the signature 9.4-inch circular OLED infotainment display, a panoramic sunroof, Level 1 ADAS, a head-up display, and a Harman Kardon audio system — all standard.</p><p>

Overall fit-and-finish levels feel premium.</p>

<h2>Mini Countryman JCW Engine, Performance &amp; Handling</h2>

<p>Under the hood sits a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbo-petrol that churns out 296bhp and 400Nm. Power is channelled to all four wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic and Mini’s ALL4 AWD system. The brakes, however, are exceptional, offering strong bite and confidence to dive deep into corners.</p><p>

<h2>Mini Countryman JCW Price, Verdict &amp; Should You Buy It?</h2>

<p>The Countryman JCW is aimed at keen drivers who primarily want three things — sports-car-like performance &amp; handling, SUV-like practicality, and Mini’s iconic badge (&amp; shape). It nails all three with surprising ease. Priced at ₹64.90 lakh (ex-showroom), it isn’t cheap, but it packs in performance, personality, and usability in a way few others in the segment do.</p><p>

<p><strong>autoX Awards 2024:</strong> Among all the vehicles available in the country, Minis are widely regarded for their X-factor and fun-to-drive quotient. However, Mini India is now aiming to add efficiency to the list with the introduction of the Countryman EV. This model is targeted directly at enthusiasts, striving to be an SUV that can truly claim to do it all.</p>

<p>In India, the electric Mini Countryman is available only in the single-motor variant. This motor generates 204 horsepower and 250Nm of torque. When you press the throttle, the Countryman accelerates smoothly and in a linear manner, with the speedometer displaying a steady, progressive rush. While it may not be the quickest car on the road, I would describe its performance as brisk. Mini India’s claimed 0 to 100 km/h time of 8.6 seconds is an accurate representation of how it drives. It’s not fast enough to overwhelm beginners, but it does offer an enjoyable experience nonetheless.</p>

<p>The Countryman EV offers what Mini calls ‘experiences’, but only three of them – Core, Efficient, and Go-Kart – actually have any impact on the driving dynamics of the car. Core provides the best balance between performance and efficiency; Go-Kart enhances steering and throttle response, and Efficient…well, it’s self-explanatory, isn’t it? Despite sacrificing battery capacity, the Go-Kart delivers the fastest and liveliest driving experience.</p>

<p>The Countryman EV’s 66.45kWh battery pack offers a claimed range of 462km on a single charge. In real-world conditions, our test drive yielded a range of about 380km, which, in my opinion, is not bad at all. Although the Countryman EV isn’t the fastest amongst the cars we have, its handling is remarkable for its size and weight, even though the motor’s performance is not. While it doesn’t feel fast, it holds its line effortlessly through corners. The steering is incredibly responsive, although it does feel slightly artificially weighted. All in all, the Mini Countryman EV might just be the most practical and well-rounded Mini for the family, blending efficiency, handling, and the brand’s signature driving enjoyment into one attractive package.</p>

<p><strong>autoX Awards 2024:</strong>&nbsp;‘Is it still a Mini?’ – it’s a question we ask ourselves every time we get behind the wheel of a new <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/mini/">Mini</a>. And every single time, our answer is an emphatic NO! Take the latest Cooper S for instance. At nearly 3.9m long, you have to be barking mad to call it a Mini. Its name is a bit of a misnomer in the current day and age because, frankly, it’s as BIG as they come. However, beyond the exterior dimensions, you can say the essence of a Mini is not completely lost. But, is it fast and, more importantly, engaging enough?</p>

<p>With its 2.0-litre turbo petrol sending just over 200 horses and 300Nm of torque to the front wheels, it’s plenty fast for what it is. It can clock 0 – 100km/h in about 6.5 seconds, so it does pack a punch. The 8-speed dual-clutch auto plays along brilliantly, resulting in seamless and lighting-quick shifts, especially when you put the pedal to the metal.</p>

<p>On the racetrack, it’s a lot of fun – handling is precise, grip levels are stellar, and the driving ergonomics and outward visibility are phenomenal. That said, the whole experience feels somewhat synthetic. Sure, it handles well, but it lacks the go-kart-like feel of older Minis. Instead, it feels safe, secure, and a bit tame. There’s barely any movement. Not saying it’s not fun, but playful, it is not. Similarly, the noises you hear inside the cabin are all piped-in sounds from the speakers and not genuine exhaust notes. And while that big round infotainment touchscreen is amazing to operate, it’s a little too gimmicky, especially with its ‘Wohoo’ in Go-Kart mode – a bit too Gen Z for our tastes, to be honest.</p>

<p>Our biggest gripe with the new Cooper S, however, is its lack of driver engagement. For instance, there are no paddle shifters or manual shifts. So, all you have to do is just put your foot down and let the car do its things. It’s like being a part of a fun school project without having an active role – you might win the competition, but the victory would feel hollow.</p>

<p>That said, the Cooper S – with its neo-retro styling, funky colours, modern tech and exquisite interior – makes for a fantastic daily driver for someone who wants to have an icon in their garage and loves driving fast but isn’t necessarily looking for the visceral engagement of a true driver’s car.</p>
