<p>When the Renault Duster first arrived in India in 2012, it did not merely enter the market – it barged its way in. With best-in-class ride and handling, and a go-anywhere ability, the Duster did not take long to become an icon. It also put Renault firmly in consumers' minds. The Duster made the brand a household name and fired up the imagination of enthusiasts across the country.</p>

<p>And now, THE DUSTER IS BACK. Yes, that is the official tagline, and Renault India is clearly very excited about it. The new Duster could very well determine Renault’s future in India. We attended the Indian debut of the new Duster, spent time with the car, and spoke to Renault’s engineering and product teams. We discussed everything from design decisions and powertrain choices to feature strategy and long-term plans. Here is how the new Duster stacks up, and whether it has what it takes to once again become a force to reckon with in the compact SUV space.</p>

<h2>New Renault Duster India: Platform, Dimensions, Ground Clearance &amp; Design</h2>

<p>The Duster headed for India has been engineered for Indian conditions. According to V. Vikraman, Chief of Engineering at Renault India, the design is entirely new and India-specific. The SUV uses Renault’s Global Modular Platform, developed with a 90% focus on Indian road conditions and customer expectations. The India-spec Duster sits 50mm taller than its European counterpart, with an approach angle of 26.9 degrees, a departure angle of 34.7 degrees, and a ground clearance of 212mm – figures that place it among the best in the segment. However, all-wheel drive is not on offer for now.</p><p>

The bold DUSTER lettering up front, chunky bumpers, and squared-off LED headlamps give it a proper SUV character. The power dome on the bonnet and the muscular haunches over the rear wheels are clear nods to the original Duster. Yes, the design has been Indianised, but the European flavour remains intact. The 18-inch alloy wheels, shod with thicker 55-profile tyres, are actually more sensible than the lower-profile rubber found on the European model.</p>







<p>Renault will offer three engines: a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol, a more performance-oriented 1.3-litre turbo-petrol claiming segment-best output, and a 1.8-litre strong hybrid paired with a 1.4kWh battery. They claim that up to 80% of city driving can be done in EV mode with the hybrid – a bold claim, and one we are keen to test once we get extended time behind the wheel.</p><p>

<p>Step inside, and the dashboard layout, materials, and colour scheme are all India-specific. The cabin feels premium, but more importantly, it feels driver-focused. The seats are well bolstered, the steering wheel offers both reach and rake adjustment, and there are physical buttons for the climate control system.</p><p>The screens are sensibly sized too – large enough without being comically oversized. It gets electric adjustment and ventilation for the front seats, Level 2 ADAS, which can be switched off with a single button, and a panoramic sunroof because, well, it’s built for India. Google integration allows you to log in with your own account, effectively turning the infotainment system into a personalised interface. Overall, the interior demonstrates that Renault has prioritised real-world usability over mere reel-worthy features.</p><p>

<p>The only worrying aspect was the abundance of hard plastic inside the cabin. It is not a deal-breaker, but certain areas could definitely feel richer – the section above the dashboard, for instance.</p>

<h2>Renault Duster AWD in India: Why 4x4 Is Not Offered (For Now)</h2>

<p>This one has been bothering many of you, hasn’t it? Renault’s answer is simple and pragmatic. According to Bruno Vanel, Global Product Lead for the Duster, the platform is 4x4-ready but not feasible. In the previous generation, AWD accounted for just 5% of total sales.</p><p>

But if Renault prices it right, this could be the SUV that shifts the goalposts, if not outright resets the benchmarks, in the compact SUV space.</p><p>Will it dethrone the Creta? Unlikely. That mountain is simply too tall to climb. Black cladding runs along the sides, giving it a tough stance, while roof rails come fitted as standard. At the rear, the LED tail-lamps are joined by a light bar, along with a roof-mounted spoiler, rear washer and wiper.</p><h2><strong>New Renault Duster SUV: Interior</strong></h2><p>Inside, Duster has moved on from the old-school layout. The dashboard design follows the global model and feels more modern. A free-standing touchscreen sits at the centre, paired with a digital instrument cluster. Leatherette upholstery is used on the seats and door pads, while the centre console offers an adjustable front armrest with storage. Rear passengers also get an armrest with cupholders, adding to everyday comfort.</p><p>The feature list is where the new Duster makes a strong step forward. <p>India may soon see more Euro-built cars on its roads as the Indo-EU trade deal moves closer. A major cut in import duty could change what European brands bring to India. That single change could make a big difference to what reaches Indian roads. Several global models stay away only because pricing does not work under the current tax structure. <p>A look at the history of the <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/renault/">Renault</a> brand in India is enough to realise the importance of the <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/renault/duster/">Duster</a>, not just in establishing the Renault brand in India but also in popularising SUVs in the Indian market. With its handsome design, great practicality, and terrific suspension, the Duster’s success set the tone for the success that SUVs would go on to achieve in the Indian market. But, in the eight years since its original launch, the competition in the mid-size SUV segment has become incredibly intense, with the Duster being overshadowed by its rivals. So, in response, Renault has decided to give the Duster some mild visual enhancements and a brand-new engine. The question is whether that’s enough to put the Duster back in the game.</p>

<p><strong>NIP &amp; TUCK</strong><br />
The Duster was a pretty handsome SUV when it was launched in 2012, and, to an extent, it still is – the design has aged quite well. It still looks contemporary and attractive. In its latest version, the Duster features some design highlights that are marked by red detailing to stand out. This includes red touches on the front grille, bumper, and wheels, along with new badging, and a new alloy wheel design. It’s also available in different colours – the Caspian blue shade of our test car is a particularly attractive colour.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Unlike the exterior design, the Duster’s interior is beginning to show its age – you can tell that this an eight-year-old car. Compared to its rivals, the Duster’s interior is pretty basic and there are hard plastics everywhere. In short, it definitely feels outclassed by more recent rivals, such as the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. But that’s not to say that the Duster’s interior has lost all its functionality – it still offers a decent amount of space for passengers and has a large 475-litre boot.</p>

<p>Equipment-wise, the Duster does get dual airbags, ABS, and EBD as standard across the range, but misses out on equipment that its rivals offer, such as a sunroof, xenon or LED lights, and ventilated seats, to name a few. &nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>ACE UP ITS SLEEVE</strong><br />
Ever since its launch in 2012, the Duster has offered class-leading ride quality, something which continues to be a highlight in this latest version. Irrespective of the road conditions and speed you’re carrying, the suspension setup of the Duster is simply flawless, which makes its cabin an extremely comfortable place to be in. It also imbues you with a sense of security and safety while cruising at high speeds on the highway. The high-speed stability of the Duster is fantastic, and I’d go so far as to say that the ride quality remains amongst the best in the Indian market, particularly in terms of tackling broken roads. &nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>NEW BLOOD</strong><br />
However, the real treat in this latest avatar is its brand-new engine – a 1.3-litre turbocharged petrol unit. With the 1.3-litre motor, the Duster now features almost 50% more power than the old 1.5-litre diesel unit. The new engine, with its 153bhp, is a fantastic unit. Despite being turbocharged, the engine’s response is terrific – it delivers power in a linear way and revs freely to the redline. &nbsp;</p>

<p>The Duster has always been a fun car to drive, but the added power really kicks up the performance and fun factor. The quick mid-range and top-end response means that cruising at three-digit speeds is a breeze. Also, its instant in-gear acceleration makes tackling tight gaps in traffic quite easy. &nbsp;</p>

<p>However, the Duster’s added power also exaggerates one of its main problems – the steering kickback, which continues to be a real annoyance for the driver. While the suspension and body control of the Duster makes it a breeze to drive on bad roads, the steering kickback can be very tiring indeed. The kickback is even more tiring in the hills, and this unfortunate trait has only been enhanced by the Duster’s newfound turn of speed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>That apart, with the new engine, the Duster has become a lot more engaging. It remains a phenomenal driver’s car, with a high seating position, easy visibility because of its large glasshouse, and instant engine response. The terrific suspension setup and added power now make it a much better driver’s car, with a chassis that can certainly handle the additional power. In short, with its large boot, great suspension and comfort, the Duster continues to cover the basics extremely well.</p>

<p>The Duster’s weak points, then, are its interior design, quality, and feature-list – not to mention that annoying kickback. However, it continues to offer great value for money, given that its priced between `10.49 and 13.59 lakh. At that price, the Duster still makes a strong case for itself as an SUV that does exactly what it’s advertised to do. It is old-school – but, with a modern heart, remains fun to drive. &nbsp; &nbsp;</p>
