<p>Whenever you get to keep a car for a couple of months, parting ways is always difficult. But as they say, all good things must come to an end – and so does my time with the Skoda Kylaq. I have come to appreciate the phenomenal ride quality and handling. It has been a great companion for city drives, negotiating tight spaces with ease, absorbing potholes, and keeping me engaged for many kilometres. Even at night, the LED lamps did an excellent job illuminating the road ahead.</p>
<p>As with most cars, the Kylaq has its share of niggles. The one that has irked me most is the sudden jolt when the turbo spools. Despite careful accelerator modulation in slow-moving traffic, it can catch you off guard and launch the car forward like a slingshot. Otherwise, the Kylaq is fairly linear and predictable across the rest of the rev range. The automatic start/stop feature is also not ideal. It tends to shut off the engine even during brief halts in stop-and-go traffic. The system could benefit from a slight delay before putting the engine to rest. I usually drive with the feature turned off.</p>
<p>Having driven the Kylaq more aggressively over the past month, and with other team members piloting it for short periods, the fuel efficiency figures were slightly lower than usual. I managed around 10.5km/l, which isn’t bad. Fortunately, a few early-morning highway runs helped improve that figure.</p>
<p>Skoda has truly built a car that performs well on Indian roads without being heavy on the wallet. As such, I have already recommended it to several buyers in their late 20s and early 30s. </p>

<p>Skoda Auto India has once again revised the prices of the <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/skoda/kylaq/">Kylaq</a>, marking the second increase for the SUV this year.&nbsp;The hike varies depending on the variant, and is up to Rs 33,000. The entry-level Classic&nbsp;variant is excluded from the price hike and continues to be priced at Rs 7.59 lakh. Meanwhile, the Signature MT, Signature AT,&nbsp;Signature+ MT, and Signature+ AT variants have all witnessed an increase of Rs 33,000. The Prestige MT and Prestige AT variants have also become Rs 24,000 more expensive than before. <p>India may soon see more Euro-built cars on its roads as the Indo-EU trade deal moves closer. A major cut in import duty could change what European brands bring to India. That single change could make a big difference to what reaches Indian roads. Several global models stay away only because pricing does not work under the current tax structure. <p><br></p><p>The biggest update is expected in the features list. The Skoda Kushaq facelift is likely to offer a panoramic sunroof and for the first time. A larger touchscreen infotainment system with updated software is also expected. Other features could include a digital instrument cluster, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, wireless charging, ventilated front seats and connected car technology. Safety may also improve with the possible addition of Level 2 ADAS features such as adaptive cruise control, lane assist and forward collision warning.</p>

The name comes from the English word 'Peak', and stands for 'the top of the range'. It also aligns with the company's signature SUV naming style ending with the letter 'Q'.&nbsp;While the SUV's production version is set to debut this year,&nbsp;the Vision 7S Concept was already unveiled at last year’s Auto Expo,&nbsp;giving a glimpse of the design cues likely to carry over to the production model. <p><strong><em>The moment our review of the Skoda Kushaq went live, we were bombarded with questions regarding the capabilities of the 1.0-litre version of the Kushaq and how it drives compared to the 1.5-litre version. In this review, we answer all those questions and more.</em></strong></p>

<p>In a complicated market like India, it’s difficult to predict what aspect of a product or even what variants of it will capture the curiosity of customers. And when it’s a brand-new product with multiple engine options, this difficulty becomes even more difficult. In my opinion, the reason for this is that we still are at a relatively nascent stage as an automotive market. Sure, we have a vast line-up of products to choose from, but customers are still figuring out their preferences and priorities. For example, in the last 5 years or so, the acceptance of automatic transmissions has increased exponentially – in fact, a lot of urban customers are now no longer interested in manual-transmission cars because driving them in heavy traffic gives them nothing but pain, both physical and mental.</p>

<p>Similarly, fuel choices have been in constant flux, more so of late, but that’s mostly because of a lack of a coherent policy from our government and mindless taxation, which has rendered running costs quite uncomfortable, even downright unbearable, for most customers. But, given the lack of an effective public transport system and the problems caused by the pandemic, we have no choice but to continue using our personal vehicles, albeit with a sigh and a rapidly depleting bank balance.</p>

<p><strong>Rightsizing</strong></p>

<p>In the context of such complications, it’s easier to understand the immense interest in the <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/skoda/kushaq/">Kushaq’s</a> 1.0-litre engine. On paper, it has ample power and torque, with turbocharging, to power the Kushaq effectively. At the same time, being a smaller engine, it also promises efficiency gains, which will naturally attract the attention of customers.</p>

<p>Now, what’s interesting is the kind of questions we received about the 1.0-litre engine. Most viewers and readers wondered whether the 1.0-litre was fast enough. Many wondered how the 6-speed automatic performed. And then there were those who wanted to know how the manual transmission was, and how heavy the clutch pedal felt to use? Some also wondered if it is a value proposition for Indian customers. So, here’s what I think about all these aspects of the 1.0-litre variant of the Kushaq.</p>

<p><strong>Old Wine, New Bottle</strong></p>

<p>The EA211 engine is a powerplant that we’re already familiar with. It’s essentially the same engine that powers the Rapid. It has undergone a few tweaks and some hardware changes for the Kushaq, and in this tune, it produces 114bhp and a healthy 178Nm of torque. More importantly, though, the peak torque arrives at 1,750rpm and remains available until 4,500rpm. This means that it has a healthy and vast peak torque curve, which helps a lot during urban driving and in making the mid-range response of the engine better. Another positive aspect of the EA211 is that despite being a three-pot engine, the NVH levels are extremely well controlled, and there isn’t excessive vibration or noise inside the cabin. Outside, I would say that the three-cylinder engine sounds quite nice and adds to the driving experience of the Kushaq.</p>

<p><strong>On the Road</strong></p>

<p>The first thing you notice when you drive the 1.0-litre Kushaq is that the engine does its best work above the 1,800 – 1,900rpm mark, which makes sense, as the peak torque kicks in just before that mark and allows the Kushaq to pick up enthusiastically. Below 1,800rpm, unfortunately, there isn’t much grunt available, so you will have to wait for the turbo to spool up before the engine delivers its optimal performance.</p>

<p>In terms of pure performance, the 1.0-litre TSI is an engine that loves to rev and does its best work in the mid-and top-end of the rev band. This means that in-gear acceleration is peppy and there’s plenty of power – even under a decently heavy load, the Kushaq never runs out of steam. This is also applicable on the highway, where the Kushaq goes up to three-digit speeds with ease. Frankly, you can cruise effortlessly at those speeds all day, without any problem. &nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Gearing Up</strong></p>

<p>Now, both engines of the Kushaq are offered with manual and automatic gearboxes, albeit the gearboxes are different in both engines. The 6-speed manual in the 1.0-litre version is called the MQ200, and it is a peach of a gearbox to use. The shifts are quick and the gates between gears are well defined. In general, it just feels like a gearbox with direct, positive shifts – very enjoyable indeed. And to answer the query that many of you had, the clutch of the manual variant is light – it has decent travel, which is not too long and is quite effortless in its operation.</p>

<p>The automatic, on the other hand, is a brand new 6-speed torque converter unit – the AQ250. It’s the first fourth-generation gearbox of its kind in the global <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/skoda/">Skoda</a>/VW family. While the 7-speed DSG of the 1.5-litre was excellent to use, the AQ250 is no slouch either and offers quick and refined shifts. Additionally, if you like manual control, the Kushaq also features steering-mounted gearshift paddles. Actually, both automatic gearboxes of the Kushaq are excellent, and I found no major issues with either of them.</p>

<p><strong>Summing it Up</strong></p>

<p>Here’s my assessment of the Kushaq 1.0-litre for you. It’s fairly quick and has more than adequate performance. Both gearboxes work extremely well, and the clutch is light to use. In fact, having looked at the prices of the Kushaq, I would go as far as to say that my variant of choice in the Kushaq range would be the 1.0-litre automatic, which, given its price and performance, is a sweet spot in the variant line-up. And the fact that it’s one of the best driving <a href="https://www.autox.com/suv-cars-in-india/" target="_blank">SUV</a>s in its segment is a cherry on the cake.&nbsp;</p>

Skoda Kushaq 1.0 TSI Review: First Drive

Here’s my assessment of the Skoda Kushaq 1.0-litre. It’s fairly quick and has more than adequate performance. Both gearboxes work extremely well, and the clutch is light to use. Having looked at its prices, my variant of choice in the Kushaq range would be the 1.0-litre automatic.

<p><b>As the first product to come out of Skoda’s India 2.0 strategy, the Kushaq has a lot riding on its shoulders. Does it have enough substance to match the expectation? </b></p>

<p>The latest offering from Skoda – the <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/skoda/kushaq/">Kushaq</a> – gets its name from the Sanskrit word <em>kushak</em>, which means ‘king’. Having worked on its development for more than three years, <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/skoda/">Skoda</a> is quite positive and confident that the Kushaq will live up to its name. The Kushaq, then, just like a king, has a huge responsibility to shoulder – that of leading the India 2.0 strategy’s assault and establishing a stronghold in the mid-size SUV space. The real question, however, is whether the Kushaq has what’s needed to dominate the segment? We spent some time with the top-spec 1.5 TSI variant of the SUV, with a 6-speed manual transmission, to find out the answer. &nbsp;</p>

<p><b>Exterior Design:</b></p>

<p>Inspired by the Vision IN concept, the Kushaq has an uncluttered and clean-cut exterior design. The new butterfly grille with a thick chrome surround gives it a very distinct face, while the ridges on the bonnet, culminating into the front-end, give it a signature Skoda appeal. Certain design elements also seem to be influenced by the larger Kodiaq – for instance, the vertically stacked twin-light setup and L-shaped faux air dams on the bumper. The black and silver details on the bumper add a sense of sportiness to the overall design, and the prominent character lines and 17- inch Atlas alloys (on our test car) do well to make the car look lean. The neatly chiselled tailgate is further embellished by the intricate detailing on the LED taillight, which also adds to the overall elegance of the Kushaq.</p>

<p>A quick glance at the Kushaq is enough for you to notice that it’s shorter in length and width than some of its rivals. While it doesn’t quite affect the space inside the cabin – we’ll come to it in a bit – it does have an impact on the boot capacity, which is considerably smaller than that of its rivals. Now, give that size is a major influencing factor amongst <a href="https://www.autox.com/suv-cars-in-india/" target="_blank">SUV</a> buyers, it’s possible that the Kushaq’s relatively compact dimensions may drive away a few buyers.</p>

<p><b>Interior and Features:</b></p>

<p>While the Kushaq’s exterior does feel a bit compact, its interior is surprisingly spacious. The 2,561mm wheelbase translates into an ample amount of space, even for taller passengers, at the back. Old Skoda cars had compromised leg room, owing to a large transmission tunnel, but the Kushaq, thankfully, has done well to get rid of it. The smaller dimensions of the car, however, do reflect in its boot capacity, which is just 385 litres – nearly 50 litres less than that of the segment’s best-seller, the <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/hyundai/creta/" target="_blank">Hyundai Creta</a>.</p>

<p>The multi-layered dash gives the Kushaq’s interior a unique appeal, and the use of different textures adds to the overall sportiness of the cabin. However, the use of grainy plastics at the bottom half of the dash and on the door pads diminishes the richness of the interior a bit.</p>

<p>The front seats offer reasonable comfort, but the side bolstering could have been better. Just like the Superb and Octavia, the Kushaq, too, gets a two-spoke steering wheel, which really makes the cabin look premium. While the Kushaq gets analogue speedo and tacho read-outs, it has a digital MID in the centre. We got our hands on the Style trim of the Kushaq, which comes with a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, equipped with wireless SmartLink and some basic connected tech via the mySkoda app. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>In terms of features, the Kushaq gets LED lighting, ambient lighting, ventilated front seats, climate control, and a sunroof. It does, however, miss out on some basic tech like electrically adjustable driver seat and some new-age connectivity features, like remote starting / cooling function. In fact, it even misses out on meaningful ‘Simply Clever’ features. While it does get a ticket holder on the A-pillar, phone pockets on the front seatback, easy-open bottle holders, and some more, they are simply not clever enough, especially in comparison to other Skoda offerings. Safety, however, remains a priority for Skoda – the Kushaq comes with a long list of safety equipment, like six airbags, ISOFIX, hill-hold function, multi-collision braking, and tyre pressure monitoring. Skoda also offers ESC as standard on all variants of the Kushaq – a first-in-class feature.</p>

<p><b>Engine and Transmission:</b></p>

<p>The Kushaq is offered with two petrol engines – a 1.0-litre TSI unit borrowed from the Rapid and a larger 1.5-litre TSI. There is no diesel engine on offer. Both engines come paired with a 6-speed manual as standard. While the 1.0 TSI gets an option of a 6-speed torque converter, the 1.5 TSI can be had with the renowned 7-speed DSG. &nbsp;</p>

<p>We only got a chance to test the 1.5-litre TSI with the 6-speed manual. The engine makes 148bhp and 250Nm – the same as that of the Karoq – but this is the first time we’ve tested this motor with a manual. From a standstill, you notice that there is a bit of turbo lag, and the engine only starts to feel sufficiently punchy once the tacho needle crosses the 2,000rpm mark. From there on, however, the power delivery is meaty, and the Kushaq feels amply spirited. Skoda claims that the Kushaq can cross the 100km/h mark in just 8.6 seconds. And although we haven’t tested it yet, we think it could get pretty close to that figure in the real world. While the engine offers plenty of pulling power and is eager to go right up to its 6,000rpm redline, it tends to get a bit noisy beyond 4,500rpm. &nbsp;</p>

<p>The 6-speed manual transmission does well to compensate for the lack of poke in the lower rev range. You can really move up the gears quickly and maintain speeds of around 50 – 55km/h in fifth gear, without the engine quivering in discomfort. This nature of the transmission does demand a downshift or two when you need to make a quick overtake. Its short and precise throws, however, make shifting between cogs quite a breeze. The clutch action is light but a bit springy for my liking.</p>

<p><b>Ride and Handling:</b></p>

<p>The ride quality of the Kushaq is indeed a pleasant surprise. Our shoot location demanded a drive over some seriously rough terrain, but the Kushaq cushioned everything amazingly. The 188mm of ground clearance was sufficient enough, with the exception of one unusually large hump – the underbelly, however, suffered no scrapes throughout our drive.</p>

<p>The Kushaq is based on Skoda’s MQB-A0-IN platform – a heavily adapted version of the popular MQB platform, which also underpins cars like the Octavia and the Superb. The rigid chassis and well-tuned suspension make the Kushaq surefooted and confident around corners. You do feel some lateral movement around bends at high speeds, but it doesn’t feel loose or disorderly by any means. The steering is predictable but a little too light for my liking – a little more heft would have been welcome. The top-of-the-line Style trim that we drove was fitted with 17-inch alloys wrapped with 205 / 55 Goodyear Assurance Triplemax 2 rubber. During our drive, even in the wet conditions, the tyres seemed to perform their duties without much drama.</p>

<p><b>Verdict</b></p>

<p>The Kushaq is the first product to come out of Skoda’s India 2.0 strategy, and it’s mighty impressive. It looks the part – both outside and inside – and is amply comfortable. The 1.5 TSI offers good performance and tractability. Yes, it does have a few downsides, like the fit-and-finish of certain parts in the cabin and the absence of some key features, to name a few.</p>

<p>And while the lower-spec 1.0 TSI variants are priced reasonably well, the presence of the 1.5 TSI could have made them even more competitive. Overall, it’s the ride-and-handling balance that gives the king enough power and strength to hold its ground in the mid-size SUV battle and makes it a force to reckon with.</p>

Skoda Kushaq Review: First Drive

As the first product to come out of Skoda’s India 2.0 strategy, the Kushaq has a lot riding on its shoulders. Does it have enough substance to match the expectation? We take it for a spin to find out

<p><em><strong>The arrival of the Kushaq marks the beginning of Skoda’s ‘India 2.0’ program. To give us a taste of what to expect from the Kushaq, Skoda India took us on a short drive with two of its testing prototypes.&nbsp;</strong></em></p>

<p>The Kushaq is the first product to be launched by <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/skoda/">Skoda</a> under their India 2.0 program. Based on an India-specific version of the much-acclaimed MQB platform, the Kushaq features a wheelbase of 2,651mm, and we expect it to be around 4.3 metres in length. Of course, the prime target of the Kushaq will be the highly successful Korean duo – the <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/hyundai/creta/">Hyundai Creta</a> and the <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/kia/seltos/">Kia Seltos</a>.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Powering the Kushaq will be a petrol-only powertrain with a choice of two turbocharged engines, 1.0-litre and 1.5-litre. Both engines will be available with 6-speed manual gearboxes, and while the 1.0-litre will offer a 6-speed torque converter automatic, the 1.5-litre will be offered with a 7-speed DSG gearbox. Sure, fans of diesel engines will be disappointed to know that the Kushaq will not be offered with a diesel variant, but with emissions regulations tightening up, Skoda India says that launching a diesel version of the Kushaq doesn’t make sense in the long term.&nbsp;</p>

<p>To address some concerns with Skoda products – mainly cost of spare parts and ownership – and to reduce overall cost, the Kushaq will be highly localized, featuring 92% localization at its launch and going up to 95% at a later stage. This, of course, will mean that customers can expect an improved ownership experience with the Kushaq. At the same time, the Kushaq will not skimp on standard equipment with the Kushaq featuring up to 6 airbags, Electronic Stability Control as standard on all variants, automatic headlights and wipers and much more.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In our brief test drive, we drove the 1.0-litre manual and 1.5-litre DSG automatic versions and I’m happy to say that from the get-go, the Kushaq feels like a terrific car to drive. Even though the cars we were driving were pre-production and the final setup was still being tweaked, the overall ride and handling balance of the Kushaq were on point. I was particularly impressed with the 1.0-litre engine, which features excellent refinement and is quite powerful.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The other thing that impressed me was that right from the minute we started driving, is that the Kushaq feels really nimble on its feet and doesn’t feel like it’s carrying extra mass. This naturally means that the dynamic setup of the chassis and suspension is quite well done, and the body roll is very well controlled. And while the ride can be slightly on the stiffer side, but I think that’s a good compromise given the advantages it offers in the handling department. And talking about comfort, the interiors of the Kushaq offer quite a bit of room, and the rear seat features what I think will be class-leading leg and headroom.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In fact, I would go as far as saying that if my initial driving impressions are correct, the <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/skoda/kushaq/">Kushaq</a> at the time of its launch could easily be the Driver’s car of choice in its segment. And, you won’t have to wait very long for the Kushaq as it will make its global debut in late March this year, followed by the official launch in India in April.&nbsp;</p>
