SKODA Auto India Private Limited (SAIPL) has been operating in India since 2001 as a subsidiary of SKODA AUTO. At the age of 123 years, SKODA is one of the oldest automotive manufacturers in the world. From as early as 1895, first bicycles, later motorcycles and, from 1905, cars have been built at their headquarters in Mladá Boleslav, Czech Republic.

The year 1991 marked the dawn of a new era for the brand as SKODA went on to become the fourth brand under the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/volkswagen/" title="Volkswagen">Volkswagen</a>&nbsp;Group, after which the leadership, marketing, product development and production underwent substantial modernisation.

The first ever&nbsp;Skoda&nbsp;car in India was the&nbsp;Octavia, launched in 2002 as a CKD unit. It became an instant hit in the Indian car market for its frugal yet punchy 1.9 TDI engine. In 2005, Skoda went on to launch the Laura, which was actually the second generation of the Octavia in the global markets. In India, however, the car was sold as a different product alongside the first-generation Octavia. The first generation Octavia enjoyed a healthy production run till 2010, paving the way for the launch of its third generation model in 2013.

Skoda has enjoyed a reputation in the Indian car industry for being a premium car manufacturer and is slowly expanding its product portfolio from sedans to SUVs. The range of new Skoda cars in India consists of the Rapid, Octavia,&nbsp;Superb&nbsp;&amp; the&nbsp;Kodiaq&nbsp;which also form the company’s 2018 product line-up.

The all Skoda car models sold in India roll off the production lines in Pune and Aurangabad. The plant in Aurangabad, Maharashtra produces the Octavia, Kodiaq and Superb. Production of the Rapid has taken place since 2011 in Volkswagen’s Pune plant.

Skoda car prices start from around 8.4 lakh rupees for the 2018 Rapid and go up to double-digit figures for the remaining models. Skoda car price listings can be found on the website of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.autox.com/" title="autoX">autoX</a>.

The moment our review of the Skoda Kushaq went live, we were bombarded with questions regarding the capabilities of the 1.0-litre version of the Kushaq and how it drives compared to the 1.5-litre version. In this review, we answer all those questions and more.

In a complicated market like India, it’s difficult to predict what aspect of a product or even what variants of it will capture the curiosity of customers. And when it’s a brand-new product with multiple engine options, this difficulty becomes even more difficult. In my opinion, the reason for this is that we still are at a relatively nascent stage as an automotive market. Sure, we have a vast line-up of products to choose from, but customers are still figuring out their preferences and priorities. For example, in the last 5 years or so, the acceptance of automatic transmissions has increased exponentially – in fact, a lot of urban customers are now no longer interested in manual-transmission cars because driving them in heavy traffic gives them nothing but pain, both physical and mental.

Similarly, fuel choices have been in constant flux, more so of late, but that’s mostly because of a lack of a coherent policy from our government and mindless taxation, which has rendered running costs quite uncomfortable, even downright unbearable, for most customers. But, given the lack of an effective public transport system and the problems caused by the pandemic, we have no choice but to continue using our personal vehicles, albeit with a sigh and a rapidly depleting bank balance.

Rightsizing

In the context of such complications, it’s easier to understand the immense interest in the <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/skoda/kushaq/">Kushaq’s</a> 1.0-litre engine. On paper, it has ample power and torque, with turbocharging, to power the Kushaq effectively. At the same time, being a smaller engine, it also promises efficiency gains, which will naturally attract the attention of customers.

Now, what’s interesting is the kind of questions we received about the 1.0-litre engine. Most viewers and readers wondered whether the 1.0-litre was fast enough. Many wondered how the 6-speed automatic performed. And then there were those who wanted to know how the manual transmission was, and how heavy the clutch pedal felt to use? Some also wondered if it is a value proposition for Indian customers. So, here’s what I think about all these aspects of the 1.0-litre variant of the Kushaq.

Old Wine, New Bottle

The EA211 engine is a powerplant that we’re already familiar with. It’s essentially the same engine that powers the Rapid. It has undergone a few tweaks and some hardware changes for the Kushaq, and in this tune, it produces 114bhp and a healthy 178Nm of torque. More importantly, though, the peak torque arrives at 1,750rpm and remains available until 4,500rpm. This means that it has a healthy and vast peak torque curve, which helps a lot during urban driving and in making the mid-range response of the engine better. Another positive aspect of the EA211 is that despite being a three-pot engine, the NVH levels are extremely well controlled, and there isn’t excessive vibration or noise inside the cabin. Outside, I would say that the three-cylinder engine sounds quite nice and adds to the driving experience of the Kushaq.

On the Road

The first thing you notice when you drive the 1.0-litre Kushaq is that the engine does its best work above the 1,800 – 1,900rpm mark, which makes sense, as the peak torque kicks in just before that mark and allows the Kushaq to pick up enthusiastically. Below 1,800rpm, unfortunately, there isn’t much grunt available, so you will have to wait for the turbo to spool up before the engine delivers its optimal performance.

In terms of pure performance, the 1.0-litre TSI is an engine that loves to rev and does its best work in the mid-and top-end of the rev band. This means that in-gear acceleration is peppy and there’s plenty of power – even under a decently heavy load, the Kushaq never runs out of steam. This is also applicable on the highway, where the Kushaq goes up to three-digit speeds with ease. Frankly, you can cruise effortlessly at those speeds all day, without any problem. &nbsp;

Gearing Up

Now, both engines of the Kushaq are offered with manual and automatic gearboxes, albeit the gearboxes are different in both engines. The 6-speed manual in the 1.0-litre version is called the MQ200, and it is a peach of a gearbox to use. The shifts are quick and the gates between gears are well defined. In general, it just feels like a gearbox with direct, positive shifts – very enjoyable indeed. And to answer the query that many of you had, the clutch of the manual variant is light – it has decent travel, which is not too long and is quite effortless in its operation.

The automatic, on the other hand, is a brand new 6-speed torque converter unit – the AQ250. It’s the first fourth-generation gearbox of its kind in the global <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/skoda/">Skoda</a>/VW family. While the 7-speed DSG of the 1.5-litre was excellent to use, the AQ250 is no slouch either and offers quick and refined shifts. Additionally, if you like manual control, the Kushaq also features steering-mounted gearshift paddles. Actually, both automatic gearboxes of the Kushaq are excellent, and I found no major issues with either of them.

Summing it Up

Here’s my assessment of the Kushaq 1.0-litre for you. It’s fairly quick and has more than adequate performance. Both gearboxes work extremely well, and the clutch is light to use. In fact, having looked at the prices of the Kushaq, I would go as far as to say that my variant of choice in the Kushaq range would be the 1.0-litre automatic, which, given its price and performance, is a sweet spot in the variant line-up. And the fact that it’s one of the best driving <a href="https://www.autox.com/suv-cars-in-india/" target="_blank">SUV</a>s in its segment is a cherry on the cake.&nbsp;

Skoda Kushaq 1.0 TSI Review: First Drive

Here’s my assessment of the Skoda Kushaq 1.0-litre. It’s fairly quick and has more than adequate performance. Both gearboxes work extremely well, and the clutch is light to use. Having looked at its prices, my variant of choice in the Kushaq range would be the 1.0-litre automatic.

As the first product to come out of Skoda’s India 2.0 strategy, the Kushaq has a lot riding on its shoulders. Does it have enough substance to match the expectation? 

The latest offering from Skoda – the <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/skoda/kushaq/">Kushaq</a> – gets its name from the Sanskrit word kushak, which means ‘king’. Having worked on its development for more than three years, <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/skoda/">Skoda</a> is quite positive and confident that the Kushaq will live up to its name. The Kushaq, then, just like a king, has a huge responsibility to shoulder – that of leading the India 2.0 strategy’s assault and establishing a stronghold in the mid-size SUV space. The real question, however, is whether the Kushaq has what’s needed to dominate the segment? We spent some time with the top-spec 1.5 TSI variant of the SUV, with a 6-speed manual transmission, to find out the answer. &nbsp;

Exterior Design:

Inspired by the Vision IN concept, the Kushaq has an uncluttered and clean-cut exterior design. The new butterfly grille with a thick chrome surround gives it a very distinct face, while the ridges on the bonnet, culminating into the front-end, give it a signature Skoda appeal. Certain design elements also seem to be influenced by the larger Kodiaq – for instance, the vertically stacked twin-light setup and L-shaped faux air dams on the bumper. The black and silver details on the bumper add a sense of sportiness to the overall design, and the prominent character lines and 17- inch Atlas alloys (on our test car) do well to make the car look lean. The neatly chiselled tailgate is further embellished by the intricate detailing on the LED taillight, which also adds to the overall elegance of the Kushaq.

A quick glance at the Kushaq is enough for you to notice that it’s shorter in length and width than some of its rivals. While it doesn’t quite affect the space inside the cabin – we’ll come to it in a bit – it does have an impact on the boot capacity, which is considerably smaller than that of its rivals. Now, give that size is a major influencing factor amongst <a href="https://www.autox.com/suv-cars-in-india/" target="_blank">SUV</a> buyers, it’s possible that the Kushaq’s relatively compact dimensions may drive away a few buyers.

Interior and Features:

While the Kushaq’s exterior does feel a bit compact, its interior is surprisingly spacious. The 2,561mm wheelbase translates into an ample amount of space, even for taller passengers, at the back. Old Skoda cars had compromised leg room, owing to a large transmission tunnel, but the Kushaq, thankfully, has done well to get rid of it. The smaller dimensions of the car, however, do reflect in its boot capacity, which is just 385 litres – nearly 50 litres less than that of the segment’s best-seller, the <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/hyundai/creta/" target="_blank">Hyundai Creta</a>.

The multi-layered dash gives the Kushaq’s interior a unique appeal, and the use of different textures adds to the overall sportiness of the cabin. However, the use of grainy plastics at the bottom half of the dash and on the door pads diminishes the richness of the interior a bit.

The front seats offer reasonable comfort, but the side bolstering could have been better. Just like the Superb and Octavia, the Kushaq, too, gets a two-spoke steering wheel, which really makes the cabin look premium. While the Kushaq gets analogue speedo and tacho read-outs, it has a digital MID in the centre. We got our hands on the Style trim of the Kushaq, which comes with a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, equipped with wireless SmartLink and some basic connected tech via the mySkoda app. &nbsp;&nbsp;

In terms of features, the Kushaq gets LED lighting, ambient lighting, ventilated front seats, climate control, and a sunroof. It does, however, miss out on some basic tech like electrically adjustable driver seat and some new-age connectivity features, like remote starting / cooling function. In fact, it even misses out on meaningful ‘Simply Clever’ features. While it does get a ticket holder on the A-pillar, phone pockets on the front seatback, easy-open bottle holders, and some more, they are simply not clever enough, especially in comparison to other Skoda offerings. Safety, however, remains a priority for Skoda – the Kushaq comes with a long list of safety equipment, like six airbags, ISOFIX, hill-hold function, multi-collision braking, and tyre pressure monitoring. Skoda also offers ESC as standard on all variants of the Kushaq – a first-in-class feature.

Engine and Transmission:

The Kushaq is offered with two petrol engines – a 1.0-litre TSI unit borrowed from the Rapid and a larger 1.5-litre TSI. There is no diesel engine on offer. Both engines come paired with a 6-speed manual as standard. While the 1.0 TSI gets an option of a 6-speed torque converter, the 1.5 TSI can be had with the renowned 7-speed DSG. &nbsp;

We only got a chance to test the 1.5-litre TSI with the 6-speed manual. The engine makes 148bhp and 250Nm – the same as that of the Karoq – but this is the first time we’ve tested this motor with a manual. From a standstill, you notice that there is a bit of turbo lag, and the engine only starts to feel sufficiently punchy once the tacho needle crosses the 2,000rpm mark. From there on, however, the power delivery is meaty, and the Kushaq feels amply spirited. Skoda claims that the Kushaq can cross the 100km/h mark in just 8.6 seconds. And although we haven’t tested it yet, we think it could get pretty close to that figure in the real world. While the engine offers plenty of pulling power and is eager to go right up to its 6,000rpm redline, it tends to get a bit noisy beyond 4,500rpm. &nbsp;

The 6-speed manual transmission does well to compensate for the lack of poke in the lower rev range. You can really move up the gears quickly and maintain speeds of around 50 – 55km/h in fifth gear, without the engine quivering in discomfort. This nature of the transmission does demand a downshift or two when you need to make a quick overtake. Its short and precise throws, however, make shifting between cogs quite a breeze. The clutch action is light but a bit springy for my liking.

Ride and Handling:

The ride quality of the Kushaq is indeed a pleasant surprise. Our shoot location demanded a drive over some seriously rough terrain, but the Kushaq cushioned everything amazingly. The 188mm of ground clearance was sufficient enough, with the exception of one unusually large hump – the underbelly, however, suffered no scrapes throughout our drive.

The Kushaq is based on Skoda’s MQB-A0-IN platform – a heavily adapted version of the popular MQB platform, which also underpins cars like the Octavia and the Superb. The rigid chassis and well-tuned suspension make the Kushaq surefooted and confident around corners. You do feel some lateral movement around bends at high speeds, but it doesn’t feel loose or disorderly by any means. The steering is predictable but a little too light for my liking – a little more heft would have been welcome. The top-of-the-line Style trim that we drove was fitted with 17-inch alloys wrapped with 205 / 55 Goodyear Assurance Triplemax 2 rubber. During our drive, even in the wet conditions, the tyres seemed to perform their duties without much drama.

Verdict

The Kushaq is the first product to come out of Skoda’s India 2.0 strategy, and it’s mighty impressive. It looks the part – both outside and inside – and is amply comfortable. The 1.5 TSI offers good performance and tractability. Yes, it does have a few downsides, like the fit-and-finish of certain parts in the cabin and the absence of some key features, to name a few.

And while the lower-spec 1.0 TSI variants are priced reasonably well, the presence of the 1.5 TSI could have made them even more competitive. Overall, it’s the ride-and-handling balance that gives the king enough power and strength to hold its ground in the mid-size SUV battle and makes it a force to reckon with.

Skoda Kushaq Review: First Drive

As the first product to come out of Skoda’s India 2.0 strategy, the Kushaq has a lot riding on its shoulders. Does it have enough substance to match the expectation? We take it for a spin to find out

The arrival of the Kushaq marks the beginning of Skoda’s ‘India 2.0’ program. To give us a taste of what to expect from the Kushaq, Skoda India took us on a short drive with two of its testing prototypes.&nbsp;

The Kushaq is the first product to be launched by <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/skoda/">Skoda</a> under their India 2.0 program. Based on an India-specific version of the much-acclaimed MQB platform, the Kushaq features a wheelbase of 2,651mm, and we expect it to be around 4.3 metres in length. Of course, the prime target of the Kushaq will be the highly successful Korean duo – the <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/hyundai/creta/">Hyundai Creta</a> and the <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/kia/seltos/">Kia Seltos</a>.&nbsp;

Powering the Kushaq will be a petrol-only powertrain with a choice of two turbocharged engines, 1.0-litre and 1.5-litre. Both engines will be available with 6-speed manual gearboxes, and while the 1.0-litre will offer a 6-speed torque converter automatic, the 1.5-litre will be offered with a 7-speed DSG gearbox. Sure, fans of diesel engines will be disappointed to know that the Kushaq will not be offered with a diesel variant, but with emissions regulations tightening up, Skoda India says that launching a diesel version of the Kushaq doesn’t make sense in the long term.&nbsp;

To address some concerns with Skoda products – mainly cost of spare parts and ownership – and to reduce overall cost, the Kushaq will be highly localized, featuring 92% localization at its launch and going up to 95% at a later stage. This, of course, will mean that customers can expect an improved ownership experience with the Kushaq. At the same time, the Kushaq will not skimp on standard equipment with the Kushaq featuring up to 6 airbags, Electronic Stability Control as standard on all variants, automatic headlights and wipers and much more.&nbsp;

In our brief test drive, we drove the 1.0-litre manual and 1.5-litre DSG automatic versions and I’m happy to say that from the get-go, the Kushaq feels like a terrific car to drive. Even though the cars we were driving were pre-production and the final setup was still being tweaked, the overall ride and handling balance of the Kushaq were on point. I was particularly impressed with the 1.0-litre engine, which features excellent refinement and is quite powerful.&nbsp;

The other thing that impressed me was that right from the minute we started driving, is that the Kushaq feels really nimble on its feet and doesn’t feel like it’s carrying extra mass. This naturally means that the dynamic setup of the chassis and suspension is quite well done, and the body roll is very well controlled. And while the ride can be slightly on the stiffer side, but I think that’s a good compromise given the advantages it offers in the handling department. And talking about comfort, the interiors of the Kushaq offer quite a bit of room, and the rear seat features what I think will be class-leading leg and headroom.&nbsp;

In fact, I would go as far as saying that if my initial driving impressions are correct, the <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/skoda/kushaq/">Kushaq</a> at the time of its launch could easily be the Driver’s car of choice in its segment. And, you won’t have to wait very long for the Kushaq as it will make its global debut in late March this year, followed by the official launch in India in April.&nbsp;

Skoda,&nbsp;the Czech automobile manufacturer, has rolled out a new version of its Kushaq flagship SUV in the Indian market. The new edition&nbsp;was&nbsp;launched on March 27. The Onyx variant, which sits between the Active and Ambition trims, has been priced by the auto manufacturer at Rs 12.39 lakh (ex-showroom). For those unaware, the newly introduced&nbsp;edition costs Rs 80,000 more than the base Active variant. Around 20 additional variants of the Kushaq SUV are available, including Anniversary and Monte Carlo editions. The Onyx version will only be offered in limited units, according to Skoda.&nbsp;The Skoda Onyx&nbsp;gets a few additional features alongside distinctive exterior&nbsp;graphics as well as leatherette upholstery.&nbsp;Furthermore, it is offered only with a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine unit. Meanwhile, Skoda Auto India declared 2022 to be its biggest sales year after selling 53,721 units and averaging a 125 per cent growth rate per year.

<h2>Skoda Kushaq Onyx Edition: Features</h2>

The Onyx Edition receives certain extra features over the <a href="https://www.autox.com/reviews/car-reviews/skoda-kushaq-review-first-drive-109656/">Kushaq’s</a> base Ambition variant. This consists of fog lamps, rear wipers with washers, rear defoggers, LED headlights,&nbsp;automatic climate control with an air purifier, and more. Other notable features include a 7-inch touchscreen, a 6-speaker audio system, and a height-adjustable driver’s seat.&nbsp;The Kushaq Onyx Edition is equipped with dual front airbags, ESP, three-point seatbelts for every passenger, a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), and ISOFIX anchors for added security. Notably, the <a href="https://www.autox.com/reviews/car-reviews/skoda-slavia-15-tsi-mt-review-first-drive-110830/">Skoda</a>&nbsp;Kushaq received a 5-star safety rating in Global NCAP crash tests last year, making it one of India's safest SUVs.

<h2>Skoda Kushaq Onyx Edition: Interior and Exterior Details</h2>

The stylised Grey graphics on the doors and the addition of "Onyx" badging to the B-Pillar are the foremost exterior changes for the <a href="https://www.autox.com/reviews/car-reviews/skoda-kushaq-10-tsi-review-first-drive-109934/">Kushaq</a> Onyx version. The special edition also includes a faux diffuser on the front bumper, chrome grille surrounds, and 16-inch steel wheels with freshly created plastic covers.&nbsp;Minor updates to the interior include Onyx badging on the scuff plates and headrests, a Black and Grey colour scheme, a two-spoke steering wheel, chrome surrounds on the AC vents&nbsp;and a textured pattern on the dashboard.

<h2>Skoda Kushaq Onyx Edition: Engine and Gearbox</h2>

The Onyx Edition, as stated earlier, sits between the base Active and the mid-range Ambition Classic trims, which are both powered by 1.0-litre&nbsp;turbo-petrol engines that churn&nbsp;out&nbsp;a maximum power of 114bhp. Further, there will only be a six-speed manual transmission option for the engine. The Onyx, therefore, gets the 1.0-litre unit as its sole option, with the automatic transmission not available with the model. However, a 6-speed torque converter automatic is expected to&nbsp;be introduced soon.

Design Upgrades

The exterior colour options for the Kushaq Anniversary Edition are the same as for the standard model. The special edition Kushaq, however, receives an 'Anniversary Edition' badge on the C-pillar and steering wheel, new door-edge protectors, new contrast stitching, and a chrome applique across the base of the doors.&nbsp;Aside from these slight additions, the Kushaq Special Edition keeps its&nbsp;17-inch alloy wheels, the front bumper's faux diffuser, and a sunroof.

Features

This updated version of the SUV includes a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay support as well as&nbsp;wireless Android Auto. It is also&nbsp;equipped with&nbsp;Electronic Stability Control (ESC),&nbsp;automatic climate control,&nbsp;traction control,&nbsp;rain-sensing wipers,&nbsp;6 airbags,&nbsp;cruise control, and other safety features.

Powertrain

According to reports, the Anniversary Edition is powered by a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder turbo petrol engine. The engine produces 113bhp and 175Nm of torque and is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. Another engine option is a 1.0-litre, 4-cylinder turbo petrol unit that produces 148bhp and 250Nm torque. This, too, is linked to a 6-speed manual transmission.

With the recent update, all variants of the Skoda Kushaq will come with a tyre pressure monitoring system and a start/stop button as standard. The new features don’t come at a premium, which means that the car will be sold at the same price as before.&nbsp;

Before this addition, the car had received several updates. For instance, the top-spec Style variant got the digital instrument cluster in July 2022. Also, the company ditched the 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system for a smaller 8.0-inch unit with physical knobs and buttons.&nbsp;

Before that, two new variants, Active Peace and Style NSR (Non-sunroof) were added to the line-up. The former became the new entry point into the lineup at a price of Rs 9.99 lakh (ex-showroom). It is available with a 1.0-litre petrol engine, which comes mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. Meanwhile, the Style NSR variant comes at a starting price of Rs 15.09 lakh (ex-showroom), which&nbsp;is Rs 20,000 more affordable than the Style variant.&nbsp;

Skoda has yet again added two new features as standard across all variants of the Kushaq SUV in India. The lineup now comes with Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) and Start/Stop button in all variants.

The Skoda Kushaq Style 1.0-litre TSI with manual transmission now gets a new NSR variant that ditches a few features including a sunroof and rain-sensing wipers among others.&nbsp;

The Skoda Kushaq has received yet another variant update for this year. The new Style NSR variant will sit just below the top-spec Style variant. While the variant comes void of a few features, the range, as a while gets a few additional equipment.&nbsp;

The NSR in the name stands for ‘Non-Sunroof'. In addition to this, Skoda has also ditched features including rain-sensing wipers and auto-dimming interior rear-view mirror in the new variant. The car also gets a smaller 15-inch spare wheel instead of the larger 16-inch one.&nbsp;

The new variant is only available with a 1.0-litre TSI motor that comes mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. Prices for this variant start at Rs 15.09 lakh (ex-showroom, India), making it Rs 20,000 more affordable than the Style variant.&nbsp;

It is to be mentioned that <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/skoda/">Skoda</a> has added more standard features to the <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/skoda/kushaq/">Kushaq</a> range. The car now gets Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) from the base variant, while the Style gets a new roof liner and a full-digital instrument cluster. Prices for the car remain unchanged at Rs 11.29 lakh for the base 1.0-litre TSI Active variant going up to Rs 18.79 lakh (ex-showroom, India) for the top-end 1.5-litre TSI Style AT.&nbsp;

Skoda has introduced a new NSR variant for the Kushaq SUV. The new variant misses out on a sunroof and sits below the top-spec Style variant with prices starting at Rs 15.09 lakh (ex-showroom, India).

Skoda India has had to resort to drastic measures to tackle the ongoing semiconductor shortage. It is reducing the touchscreen size in the <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/skoda/kushaq/">Kushaq</a> SUV and <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/skoda/kushaq/">Slavia</a> sedan from 10-inches to 8-inches.

The change in size is applicable on the Ambition and Style variants of both cars, which were previously offered with the larger 10-inch HD display. Not a lot of information is out about the new display, apart from the fact that it will be a Panasonic unit.

There is more bad news. The screen will not only be smaller in size, but it will not support wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Skoda Play ap will also not be supported. There is a silver lining though and that is, that the Monte Carlo edition which was launched recently will continue to get the larger 10-inch touchscreen.

As far as the price goes, Skoda should reduce the price of the affected variants, although there has been no communication on the same till now.&nbsp; The Czezh carmaker has taken this drastic step so that customers don’t have to wait months to take delivery of their new Skoda vehicle.

Skoda’s resurgence in India was led by the Kushaq and is set to continue with the Slavia, but the semiconductor shortage is playing spoilsport. It is having to reduce the touchscreen size from 10-inches to 8-inches on the higher-end variants of the two.

As you can see in the table above, Skoda is charging a premium of Rs 70,000 for the Monte Carlo variant of the Kushaq, which is available with all powertrain options of the Kushaq.

As far as the cosmetic updates are concerned, the Monte Carlo editions come&nbsp;with a blacked-out grille surround, Monte Carlo badges on the fender, vRS 245 alloy wheels, matte-black roof rails, a gloss-black roof, blacked-out badges on the boot lid, and a black-chrome strip running across its width. The 1.5 TSI version also gets red brake callipers.

The interior, too, receives red applique on the dashboard. There are also red surrounds around the door handles and the centre console. The seats too are finished in black and red, and the Monte Carlo badging can be found on the headrests and scuff plates.

The Monte Carlo variant also gets feature updates. The touchscreen now features a red colour scheme, but more importantly, the Kushaq Monte Carlo gets a digital instrument cluster, like the Volkswagen Taigun. There’s also an 8-speaker sound system, which, according to <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/skoda/">Skoda</a>, has high-performance speakers and a subwoofer. Lastly, the passenger side of the dashboard gets red ambient lighting as well.

While red is the exterior colour of the Kushaq Monte Carlo, which we absolutely love, you can also get it in white (optional). With this variant, the ex-showroom price of the <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/skoda/kushaq/">Kushaq</a> is now close to the Rs 20 lakh mark.

Skoda has introduced a new Monte Carlo edition of the Kushaq and it features cosmetic updates along with some feature upgrades as well. Skoda is demanding a premium of Rs 70,000 for the SUV over the Style variant.

The Kushaq’s new Active Peace variant misses out on all infotainment related features.

According to reports, Skoda has launched a new Active Peace variant of the Kushaq, which&nbsp;has now become&nbsp;the new base variant, with a sticker price of Rs 9.99 lakh (ex-showroom). For your reference, the Active variant, which was previously the base variant is priced at Rs 10.99 lakh.

To make it relatively cheaper,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/skoda/kushaq/">Skoda</a> has taken away the infotainment system from the Active variant, i.e., the screen, speakers, and USB ports. From unofficial pictures that we have seen online, there’s quite an awkward hollow space in place of the screen, but at least this will allow Kushaq owners to purchase aftermarket audio systems if they so wish.

Just like the Active variant, the Active Peace variant is only available with the 1.0 TSI engine (113bhp and 178Nm), which is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. The automatic (6-speed torque converter) transmission is available from the newly-launched Ambition Classic variant onwards.

With the introduction of the new variant, Skoda has managed to kill&nbsp;two birds with one stone. First, it has made the <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/skoda/kushaq/">Kushaq</a> an easier car to buy by dropping the entry price&nbsp;and making it a prudent choice for those who like to opt for their own aftermarket audio setup. Second, cars priced under Rs 10 lakh in India are subject to a slightly relaxed taxation structure, which is always a plus.

The Skoda Kushaq now gets a new Active Peace, which is also the new base variant for the SUV. It is available with only one powertrain choice, and comes without any infotainment features.

The new variant of the Kushaq is offered only with the 1.0 TSI engine.

In terms of features, it gains a bunch of chrome highlights both inside and outside the cabin, along with a lot of useful features, like a more advanced instrument cluster, a larger touchscreen, and rear wipe and wash, which was earlier found in the Ambition (and higher)&nbsp;variants. Compared to the Ambition variant,&nbsp;the Ambition Classic variant misses out on&nbsp;automatic climate control and the MySkoda Connect features (telematics).

With this new variant, the <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/skoda/kushaq/">Kushaq</a>&nbsp;has become&nbsp;a more versatile offering, as it is now a more value-oriented proposition for those looking at its lower variants. Skoda, however, continues to offer the larger 1.5 TSI engine only with the top-spec Style variant of the Kushaq, which would ideally find&nbsp;more takers at the lower end of the variant list.

However, the Czech carmaker will soon introduce a new Monte Carlo edition of the Kushaq, which could be based on the top-spec Style variant and may feature the larger 1.5 TSI motor.

Skoda India has announced a price hike, which will come into effect from January 1, 2022. The price hike will be applicable to all the models currently on sale. Coming back to the price increase, all Skoda cars will be dearer by three per cent from next month.

That being said, <a href="https://www.autox.com/news/car-news/skoda-rapid-production-ends-110242/">Skoda has pulled the plug on the Rapid and the sedans, which are on sale until the remaining stock</a>.

‘The decision to increase prices from January 1, 2022, is a result of the rising input costs and increased operational costs,’ Skoda Auto Brand Director Zac Hollis said in a statement.

‘Despite the macro-economic challenges, the company has worked to ensure that the customer impact in terms of the incremental price increase is minimal,' Zac further added.

The top-of-the-line Style automatic variant of the Skoda Kushaq now gets safer. The brand has updated the mid-sized SUV with more features and that has resulted in a price hike.

Just days away from the India launch of the Volkswagen Taigun, Skoda India has launched the updated Kushaq. The updates are limited to the Skoda Kushaq’s Style (automatic) AT variant only while all the other variants remain unchanged.

The Skoda Kushaq in its updated Style AT variant now offers six airbags and a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS). The addition of these two features has upped the price of the Style AT variant by Rs 40,000. Other than the addition of two features the Style AT variant is unchanged.

The more affordable Skoda Kushaq 1.0-litre Style AT now costs Rs 16.20 lakh (ex-showroom), whereas the top-of-the-line Kushaq 1.5-litre Style AT now retails for Rs 18 lakh (ex-showroom).

<a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/skoda/">Skoda India</a> has also bagged 10,000 bookings for the Kushaq within almost two and a half months of its launch.&nbsp;Skoda has also issued a recall for the Kushaq. Some units of the car show signs of power loss and undergo a complete engine shut-down because of a faulty fuel pump. The brand will replace the fuel pumps in the affected cars. As a precautionary step, Skoda will also replace the fuel pumps of those units that do not show any fuel-related symptoms.

Just recently, Skoda India discontinued the Rider Plus variant of the Rapid sedan. The rider plus was positioned above the base Rider variant and packed features such as a 6.5-inch infotainment screen with Android Auto and Apple Carplay, climate control and an armrest.

The Skoda Rapid Rider Plus was priced at Rs 8.19 lakh (ex-showroom) and Zac Hollis, Brand Director - Skoda Auto India has confirmed that this specif variant will be available till the stocks last.

The Kylaq, i20 N Line, & Fronx Turbo have all the ingredients to classify as a ‘hot hatch’ for the masses, but which one can truly be called the best?

I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time!

Well, since July 2013 to be exact – that’s the last time I drove a Ferrari V12 convertible. And it just so happens that the Ferrari 12Cilindri is the spiritual successor of this very machine – a 1971 365 GTS, the Daytona Spider, which directly inspired the styling of the front-end of this machine.
 
 
 
At the time, even in my wildest dreams I couldn’t have possibly imagined that over a decade later, on the 16th of April 2024, Ferrari would ensure that the lineage of the front-engined V12 GT would endure, thanks to the 12Cilindri.<img src="https://images.autox.com/uploads/2025/03/1741785060147-1jvd-Ferrari-12Cilindri-Spider-Front.webp" alt="Ferrari 12Cilindri Spider-Front.jpg" style="width: 100%; height: auto;">

And I certainly couldn’t have predicted that I would be at Maranello on that fateful day, when both the Berlinetta and Spider would be unveiled to an unsuspecting bunch of motoring journalists from across the globe. But that was just the unveil. This would finally be my chance to get behind the wheel – here in Cascais in Portugal, on the western most tip of the European continent.<img src="https://images.autox.com/uploads/2025/03/1741784879542-zhk3-Ferrari-12Cilindri-Spider-infotainment-screen.webp" alt="Ferrari 12Cilindri Spider-infotainment-screen.jpg" style="width: 100%; height: auto;">The 12Cilindri Spider was kitted out in its launch livery of Verde Toscana, which was offset perfectly by the black contrasting trim. And, to my eyes, it’s an absolutely stunning machine – a design that, for some reason, the pictures simply do no justice! It’s clean and elegant, while being muscular and curvaceous at the same time. There’s a timelessness to the design, and I personally think it’ll age very well indeed.

 
 
 
 


<h2>So, what’s all the fuss about?</h2>

Well, the name is a dead giveaway – the car is pronounced Dodici Cilindri, which literally translates to 12 cylinders in Italian. The engine was so important to this machine – so central to Ferrari in fact – that they decided to name this car after its engine configuration. You see, across the industry, engines are either being downsized and turbocharged or hybridised, or both, so the idea of a naturally aspirated V12 is not just truly alluring but also incredibly courageous from the Prancing Horse. <img src="https://images.autox.com/uploads/2025/03/1741784948629-7w76-Ferrari-12Cilindri-Spider-Rear-View.webp" alt="Ferrari 12Cilindri Spider-Rear-View.jpg" style="width: 100%; height: auto;">Now that’s not to say that Ferrari hasn’t also gone down the turbo and hybrid route already – in fact, with its performance flagship, the SF90, it’s attached a pair of turbos to a V8, not to mention added a battery pack and a set of motors to give it 1,000 horsepower and all-wheel drive. Meanwhile, in the achingly beautiful and spectacularly fast 296, it’s even gone down the V6 route (which is also turbocharged and hybridised) for the first time since the Dino in the 60s. And, of course, it’s also heading down the EV route, with its first all-electric supercar that will be revealed later this year.But Ferrari also wants to retain the essence of its GT cars from the 50s and 60s, which is where the 12Cilindri comes in. And so, this successor to the 812 Superfast gave up its ultimate performance throne to the SF90 and instead embraced its GT roots to make the most of the V12 under the bonnet – which can be both incredibly refined but also insanely explosive, depending on what you do with your right foot.

 
 
 
 


<h2>So, what’s under the hood?</h2>

Now, we’ve been over the specs before, but it bears repeating – it’s a 6.5-litre V12 that produces a scarcely believable 128bhp per litre for a total power output of 818bhp at 9,250rpm and 678Nm at 7,250rpm. It redlines at, brace yourself, 9,500rpm, and it’s so incredibly smooth, plus it revs so fast thanks to its titanium conrods, that you can get up to the redline and not even know it unless you’re looking at the digital tach on the instrument cluster.<img src="https://images.autox.com/uploads/2025/03/1741784971851-vk7o-Ferrari-12Cilindri-Spider-1.webp" alt="Ferrari 12Cilindri Spider-1.jpg" style="width: 100%; height: auto;">Yes, it reaches 100km/h in 2.9 seconds and 200km/h in 7.9 seconds from a standstill, but it also has a cabin outfitted with the finest handstitched Italian leather and all the tech you can possibly imagine. It gets three displays – one for the instrument cluster, one for the central screen, where you can connect your phone, and the third is a passenger screen integrated into the dash, so your unsuspecting co-driver can keep an eye on the revs as he or she hangs on for dear life.
 
 
 


Of course, in true Ferrari fashion, it’s got massive gear shift paddles mounted to the steering column – as opposed to onto the steering wheel – which is just how I like them because you always know where they are. The steering wheel has wiper controls and indicator buttons, as well the famous Manettino switch, which you use to control the driving modes. But it also has a very innocuous button on a panel off to one side of the steering wheel that’s marked HELE, which stands for ‘High Emotion, Low Emission.’ That’s Ferrari-speak for the Auto Start-Stop button. Most cars would have an ‘A’ inside a circle, but that just wouldn’t do on a Ferrari. But the thing is that it’s not contrived in the cabin of this car. It’s simply a result of the Ferrari mindset of passion and precision. Of course, they strive for absolute performance and aim for perfection, but at the heart of every decision is emotion – the emotion it evokes when you interact with the machine. And you get a sense of that ethos from everyone who works at Maranello, regardless of whether that person is in his or her first week or a veteran who’s been there for decades.
 
 
 
<h2>So, what’s it like from behind the wheel?</h2>

Well, I would love to tell you that I spent my time in the 12Cilindri Spider bouncing off the 9,500rpm rev limiter, but in fact we were met with a torrential downpour that felt less like Southern Europe and more like South Mumbai in the monsoon. But what these conditions did was usher in a complete revelation in terms of just what this Ferrari GT is capable of.

You would imagine that an 800+ horsepower rear drive beast would be a terrifying experience in the pouring rain – especially on the tight and twisting coastal roads of Portugal, but in in truth, with the Manettino set to ‘Wet,’ it was almost as docile as a Fiat Panda. But the minute you bury your right foot into the carpet, it quickly turns into a thoroughbred stallion – but never a bucking Bronco. You can see the traction control button flashing away on the dash as you try and overwhelm the rear tyres, but the electronics are so well calibrated that it modulates the power perfectly to match the prevailing levels of grip. Sure, you can always get in over your head with that much power on tap but show a little restraint and the 12Cilindri will humour and entertain you in equal measure.<img src="https://images.autox.com/uploads/2025/03/1741785017763-ioei-Ferrari-12Cilindri-Spider-Rear-Three-Quarter.webp" alt="Ferrari 12Cilindri Spider-Rear-Three-Quarter.jpg" style="width: 100%; height: auto;">Of course, any opportunity I got between the near incessant showers, I dropped the top to hear that V12 howl. Sure, it’s slightly muted because of a pair of catalytic convertors and petrol particulate filters, but in ‘Race’ mode, with the flaps in the exhaust open, it’s enough to make your hair stand on end and send chills down your spine. But, really, what stands out in this car is its sheer poise and balance. No one does cohesion quite like Ferrari. Sure, a lot of manufacturers do power and speed quite well, but no one does it with this much style and finesse.<img src="https://images.autox.com/uploads/2025/03/1741785044538-hxid-Ferrari-12Cilindri-Spider-Side-Profile.webp" alt="Ferrari 12Cilindri Spider-Side-Profile.jpg" style="width: 100%; height: auto;">

 
 


So, what you’re getting in the 12Cilindri is a level of performance &amp; style mated to a versatility &amp; usability that’s simply unmatched. You get bragging rights and the ultimate tech of course, but what really sets this machine apart is its breadth of capability, which is in a league of one. This really is a car that you can drive cross-country to your favourite racetrack, have a blast at the limit, and then drive home again at breakneck speed – in true GT fashion.

Job well done Ferrari! Thank you for flying the V12 flag – may you continue to do so for a long time to come…

Ferrari 12Cilindri Spider First Drive Review: Versatility in Verde

We drove a naturally-aspirated V12, convertible Ferrari offering maximum involvement but a torrential downpour threatened to spoil the party.

We were quite eager to&nbsp;get our hands on this bike since it was first teased at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.autox.com/news/bike-news/eicma-2024-top-india-bound-motorcycles-to-watch-out-for-118832/">EICMA</a>. After spending six months commuting on the Royal Enfield Himalayan, I was curious to see how this new KTM stacked up. Well, we recently had the opportunity to thoroughly ride and test it, and let me tell you that it's a significant leap forward. – lowers the seat height to 830mm in the Adventure variant and 825mm in the
Adventure X. On top of that, ground clearance has been increased to a solid

 The pigmented body panels are a nice touch, promising better scratch resistance since they're painted during the moulding process itself. And the standard kit – knuckle guards, engine guard, and bash plate – is quite useful for off-road scrapes. The forged foot levers feel solid, and you can remove the rubber inserts for better grip while riding&nbsp;in the dirt. My only gripe? that it’s 10% more rigid – feels solid and enhances the bike’s overall
stability. Despite the weight dropping to 183kgs, the 14.5-litre fuel tank
remains unchanged. The overall fit and finish are excellent, offering a premium
feel throughout. The 5-inch bonded TFT screen, borrowed from the new 390 Duke,
is crisp, clear, and easily readable even in bright sunlight. <h2>KTM 390 Adventure First Ride Review: Ergonomics and Features </h2>The riding position is comfortable and upright – perfect for
long days in the saddle. The new KTM 390 Adventure feels large when you're off
it but seems to shrink around you once you get on and start moving. The
controls are intuitive, and the switchgear is easy to reach. Cruise control is
a welcome addition for highway stints, and the ride modes – Rain, Street, and
Off-Road – are simple to toggle through. A big plus is that ride mode settings
remain unchanged even after switching off the ignition – a thoughtful touch
indeed!
Phone connectivity and navigation feel slick, and the
voice-activated calling is a nice convenience. Unlike the Duke 390, which can
only receive calls, the 390 Adventure allows you to make calls directly from
the bike. Finally, the electronics suite – which includes cornering ABS,
switchable cornering traction control, Quickshifter+, and customizable ride

The LC4c
399cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled engine is noticeably smoother, thanks to
the 5mm offset crank. It delivers better low-end grunt than the previous model
but still loves to be revved. Peak power kicks in 1,000rpm sooner, making it
more accessible.
That said, there’s still a noticeable lag before the bike
starts moving. I noticed that it stalled a couple of times when
setting off from a standstill off-road, but far less frequently than the old

generation model. The improved mid-range power is quite evident, delivering
faster 30 – 70 km/h roll-on acceleration.
Cruise control, which activates above 20 km/h, performs well
on the highway, especially when paired with Quickshifter+, making for a smooth

curved radiator and reprofiled shrouds that divert hot air away from the rider
– a definite and noticeable upgrade. The underbelly exhaust, with its claimed
400mm water-wading capacity, handles water crossings with ease, even when the
water level reaches the engine guards.<img src="https://images.autox.com/uploads/2025/02/1740406032170-z2yg-KTM-390-Adventure-Web-3.webp" alt="KTM 390 Adventure Web 3.jpg" style="width: 100%; height: auto;">The WP Apex suspension has received a significant upgrade,
offering a much more compliant ride, as it effortlessly absorbs bumps and rough
terrain. The adjustable open-cartridge system provides 30 steps of compression
and rebound adjustment at the front, 20 steps at the rear, and 10 steps of
preload adjustment at the rear, allowing for fine-tuning across various riding
conditions.
While the increased suspension travel is a welcome
improvement, I did notice the front forks bottoming out a couple of times
during intense off-road testing – enough to throw me off the line slightly. That
said, it’s a fair trade-off for the bike’s sharp on-road dynamics and a huge
improvement over the previous model’s overly stiff setup, which was a common

 Off-road, the bike feels light, balanced, and predictable in
technical sections. Compared to the Himalayan, it’s noticeably sharper and more
responsive. The Apollo Tramplr tyres performed decently across varied on- and
off-road conditions. However, since we didn’t lower the tyre pressure when
going off-road, the front end lacked a bit of bite.
The brakes – a 320mm floating disc with a twin-piston calliper
up front and a 240mm rear disc with a single-piston calliper – are strong and

The wait is over. The 2025 KTM 390 Adventure is here, and it's a game-changer. We rode it, pushing it to its limits, and here's our honest take.

Ather introduced their revolutionary Magic Twist regenerative braking system with the 450 Apex, a limited edition model. Then they brought traction control with the Rizta and now, you get the best of both worlds with the updated 450X…and also the new Apex. I got a chance to test out the Magic Twist and the updated traction control system on the new scooter at a go-kart track and even on some off-road patches. So, how good is the 450X now?

<h2>2025 Ather 450X Review: New Modes and Regen</h2>

The first thing I want to highlight is the multi-level traction control system. While the Rizta had a simpler on-and-off toggle, the new 450 scooters get multiple levels — Rain, Road and Rally. You can also completely switch it off if you want. As one would expect, the traction control system is the most active when you select Rain while Road is meant for daily usage.

In the Rally mode, the traction control is a lot more lenient and it allows you to kick up some dirt. We tested the modes on some loose sand and it worked really well. There is an appreciable difference when testing the scooter in extreme conditions. While the 450X, does not really need a traction control system, it is good to see it nonetheless.

The 450X still gets the same 8.4bhp motor that is capable of producing 26Nm. It is still just as fun to ride and just as responsive too. Ather has introduced a new set of tyres from MRF&nbsp;with the updated scooters. These tyres have been developed specially for the 450 and are meant to offer more range while not compromising grip. And I must say, that I hardly noticed any issue with the grip from the new rubber. Combined with the new regen braking, this setup is claimed to substantially increase the real-world range of the scooter. As per Ather, the TruRange of the 3.7kWh model has gone up from 105km to 130km. That is a healthy boost and we will be eager to test it out when we have the scooter for a longer time.

What I do feel is a missed opportunity is that there is still no ABS. I think adding ABS over traction control would have been more useful. I did find myself locking the brakes a couple of times when on the track. While you may argue that people ride more gently on the road, let me remind you that the conditions out there can be rather unpredictable. Also, now that the 450X supports traction control modes and regen levels along with ride modes, I think that Ather should display them on the screen as well. This would help the rider in knowing what levels of various settings the scooter is in, rather than having to dig deep into menus.

<h2>2025 Ather 450X Review: Colour Options and UI Updates</h2>

Ather has not changed any aspect of the scooter’s design so it remains the same as before. There are, however, two new colour options available now - Hyper Sand and Stealth Blue. I particularly like the Hyper Sand colour options as it has a nice finish and looks rather refreshing. As a bonus, if you get this colour option, you will not have to worry about the scooter looking dirty because of the shade.

The new 450 scooters also get Atherstack 6 as part of the software suite. The instrument cluster is the same touch unit and is packed with features. However, the response is still lethargic when you use the map screen. There are noticeable stutters while you pan around. I also noticed that while most of the interface operation is smooth, there are the occasional hiccups and moments when the screen does not react as quickly.

<h2>2025 Ather 450X Review: Is it better?</h2>

Altogether, the 450X remains a smart and fast scooter that is more feature-rich than ever before. I feel the Magic Twist is a great addition and one that will find a lot of daily use. The traction control might be less useful but is a good safety feature still.

As for the pricing, it has gone up ever so slightly by Rs 6,400 for the base 450X and Rs 2,000 for the 450X with the bigger 3.7kWh battery pack.

Similarly, the 450 Apex has also seen a mere increase of Rs 5,001 on the effective ex-showroom price in Bengaluru. And Ather is throwing in the Halo helmet with the Apex to make it more lucrative. Altogether, despite the price hike, the scooters remain smart and safe options to pick if you are looking for an EV in this segment.
