Skoda Octavia Highlights
When launched in 2001, the first Octavia in India garnered a huge fan following, for it was well made, fast and comfortable – and above all – came with an affordable price tag. The Octavia is also the reason behind Skoda's success in India. For a slight bump in Skoda Octavia price, the 2017 iteration brings sharper styling, a few mechanical alterations and a revamped cabin to the package.
Up-front, the Skoda Octavia new model gets quad headlamps that look quite striking. It gets full LED lighting with auto high-beam function on the top-end models. Even the bumper is sleeker and sports a chrome strip that runs in between the LED fog lamps. The side profile is simple with a subtle character line running the length of the car. And of course, there is the 16-inch alloy wheel design that looks refreshing. Even the rear remains the same, but the LED tail lights are mildly revised.
The 2017 Skoda Octavia variants are as follows: Ambition, Style and L&K. Features include a 12-way electrically-adjustable driver seat, handsfree parking, ambient lighting, a Canton sound system, iBuzz fatigue alert, driver seat with memory functions, keyless entry, cruise control, engine start/stop button, panoramic sunroof, 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto/ Apple CarPlay and dual-zone climate control. On the safety front, it gets dual front airbags, side airbags at the front and rear, and curtain airbags as well.
The first thing you notice in the cabin, is the 8.0-inch touchscreen display that offers a good touch response. You'll find scrolling knobs below the display as well. There are also some gloss black accents that look premium in the beige cabin. The instrument cluster looks much nicer than the one on the older car, and the steering feels good to hold. The party piece is the Virtual cockpit display, which justifies the huge bump in Skoda Octavia on-road price for the L&K variant. Ambient lighting is colour-programmable on the top-end variant. The design of the dashboard is neat and uncluttered. The seats are large and comfortable, and there's a lot of legroom at the front and rear. And cubbyholes and storage bins are aplenty, while boot space is great at 590 litres.
Engine Specifications & Performance
The Skoda Octavia is powered by three engine options: a 2.0-litre diesel engine that produces 141bhp and 320Nm of torque, paired to either a 6-speed DSG or a 6-speed manual gearbox, a 1.4-litre TSI petrol engine that makes 148bhp and 250Nm of torque, paired to a 6-speed manual gearbox, and a 1.8-litre TSI petrol motor that produces 177bhp and 250Nm of torque, synced with a 7-speed DSG transmission. We drove the 1.8-litre petrol-powered Octavia. It is a smooth motor and has a strong mid-range. Thanks to the multi-link independent rear suspension, it manages to be a really nice car to drive. It provides good grip when pushed hard around corners and high-speed stability is impressive. Over bad roads as well, the Octavia does a decent job.
The Skoda Octavia's ARAI-certified fuel efficiency figure is rated at 16.7kmpl for the 1.4 TSI petrol model, 15.1kmpl for the 1.8 TSI petrol model and 21kmpl for the 2.0 TDI diesel model.
