    The compact SUV has become the default choice for Indian buyers seeking the SUV form without the inconvenience that comes with owning one. As a result, the segment has not only expanded rapidly but also diversified dramatically. Carmakers now recognise that merely ticking feature boxes is no longer sufficient and that it’s essential for a product to have a distinct character to stand out. Consider the Kia Syros, for instance, which is engineered with a clear focus on space and comfort. Contrast that with the Skoda Kylaq, which prioritises driving engagement to such an extent that we previously included it in our hot hatch comparison. And then there is the updated Hyundai Venue, which enters the fray with added features and improved cabin space.</p><p>So, while all three occupy the same segment, they pursue mass appeal through very different approaches. The question, then, is simple: which one best suits your needs and is the better overall product? Let’s find out.</p>







<h2>Venue vs Kylaq vs Syros Design &amp; Road Presence</h2>

<p>Design is a matter of subjective preference, and these SUVs are no exception. Personally, I really like the clean, futuristic, and bold design of the Syros.</p><p>

    </p><p>It is my favourite of the lot. The closed-off grille and the boxy proportions help it stand out from the crowd. Yes, from certain angles, it looks more like a tallboy than an SUV, but that is the only criticism I have. That said, I am well aware that many people dislike its styling. In fact, some openly despise it.</p><p>The Venue and the Kylaq, on the other hand, look far more like conventional SUVs.</p><p>

    </p><p>As a result, most buyers are likely to gravitate toward one of these two options for exterior design. Hyundai recently updated the Venue with a new front fascia and rear section, making it look more imposing. I still dislike the gaping maw created by the front grille, but the new boxy stance brings it closer to the traditional SUV silhouette. However, between the Venue and the Kylaq, I prefer the latter. The Kylaq has a simpler yet more cohesive face, and its smart 17-inch alloys add significantly to its visual appeal. Surprisingly, the Venue is the only SUV of the three to get 16-inch alloys, and those, too, are rather plain.</p>











<h2>Venue vs Kylaq vs Syros Interior Design, Features &amp; Cabin Experience Compared</h2>

<p>The Kylaq has a well-put-together interior, and the dashboard looks good, too. However, the extensive use of hard plastic surfaces does knock it down a notch compared to its rivals.</p><p>

    </p><p>It also features an almost all-black cabin, which, while sporty in appearance, can feel slightly claustrophobic compared with the brighter interiors of the Venue and Syros. The Venue, with its updated dashboard, offers the brightest ambience of the three. I particularly like the new white inlay running across the middle of the dashboard and onto the door panels.</p><p>

    </p><p>That said, I would not call it the most cohesive design overall. In my view, the Syros strikes the best balance, combining an airy feel with the most coherent and thoughtfully executed cabin design.</p><p>In terms of features, all three support wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. However, the Kylaq lags behind because this feature is not standard and is reserved for higher trims. Both the Syros and Venue offer it as standard across the range.</p><p>

    </p><p>Screen size is another area where the Kylaq trails with a 10-inch touchscreen, while the Syros and Venue both get larger 12.3-inch displays. Thankfully, all three systems are comparable in terms of touch response and overall functionality. The same applies to the instrument clusters. The Syros and Venue feature 12.3-inch digital units, whereas the Kylaq uses a smaller 7-inch display. Once again, functionality remains broadly similar across all three.</p><p>The Syros also gets an additional 5-inch screen positioned between the touchscreen and instrument cluster for climate control.</p><p>

    </p><p>Now, I have always found screen-based AC controls cumbersome to use on the move, but thankfully, Kia has sensibly retained physical buttons for adjusting temperature and blower speed.</p>













<p>All three SUVs offer ventilated front seats, but the Syros goes a step further by providing ventilation for the second row seat base as well. It also includes the small but genuinely useful feature of one-touch operation for all four windows. <h2>Venue vs Kylaq vs Syros Rear Seat Space, Practicality &amp; Boot Capacity</h2>

<p>When it comes to the second-row experience, the Syros is comfortably the best of the lot. The space on offer is generous, the bench is supportive, and there are a few unique features. It is the only car on the list to offer an adjustable rear bench.</p><p>

    </p><p>Not only can you vary the recline angle, but you can also slide the seat to increase the legroom. At six feet tall, I could sit with ample knee room, even without sliding the rear bench fully back, while the front seats were adjusted to my preference.</p>

<p>The Venue comes close in terms of outright space, while the Kylaq is clearly the most cramped. This is surprising when you consider the spec sheets, as the Kylaq actually has the longest wheelbase of the three, at 2,566 mm.</p><p>

It can comfortably accommodate two adults for shorter commutes.</p><p>The sliding rear bench in the Syros also helps expand boot space, bringing the maximum luggage capacity to 465 litres.</p><p>

<h2>Venue vs Kylaq vs Syros Engine Options, Performance &amp; Driving Modes</h2>

<p>All three SUVs are offered with a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, with the units in the Venue and Syros being identical. As a result, their output figures are also the same.</p><p>

    </p><p>On paper, the Kylaq offers slightly less power but has a marginally higher torque figure. In real-world driving, all three deliver adequate performance. They have enough punch for quick overtakes and can maintain highway speeds comfortably, even with a completely occupied cabin.</p><p>That said, there are clear differences in how this performance is delivered. The Kylaq feels the most eager off the line, largely due to the pronounced surge you feel once the turbo kicks in.</p><p>

    </p><p>The Syros and Venue, on the other hand, offer a more linear, progressive throttle response, which is better suited to urban driving. The presence of multiple drive and traction modes in these two further helps tailor the driving experience to varying conditions.</p>







<p>Where the Kylaq clearly falls behind is in powertrain choice. Both the Venue and Syros are also available with a frugal yet punchy 1.5-litre diesel engine, while the Venue also offers a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. This breadth of options makes the Venue the most versatile.</p><p>

    </p><p>In fact, we tested the all-new (for the Venue) diesel-automatic variant in this comparison. The diesel motor is punchy, and the automatic gearbox is adequate for most driving conditions. The diesel motor also returns roughly 30-40% more mileage compared to the turbo-petrol. However, once you start pushing the Venue, you notice that the gearbox struggles to keep up. Another downside is the comparatively loud engine noise that seeps into the cabin.</p><p>It’s also worth noting that the higher trims of the Syros and Venue are equipped with Level 2 ADAS, which offers up to 16 autonomous safety features. The Kylaq, on the other hand, does not come with ADAS features. While not everyone values ADAS, having the option is undoubtedly beneficial.</p><p>

    </p><p>More importantly, both the Syros and Venue come with a surround-view camera system, but the Kylaq misses out. Even its rear-view camera lags behind in terms of resolution and overall image quality.</p>







<h2>Venue vs Kylaq vs Syros Ride Comfort, Handling &amp; Steering Feel</h2>

<p>When it comes to suspension tuning, the Venue is the most softly sprung of the lot. Both drivers and passengers will appreciate its ability to absorb rough city roads. However, this soft setup also makes it feel slightly bouncy at highway speeds, with noticeable body roll around sharper corners.</p><p>

On the plus side, that same light steering makes the Venue easy to manoeuvre in traffic and effortless to park.</p><p>The Syros, by comparison, feels the stiffest, though it still delivers acceptable ride comfort.</p><p>

<p>However, it is the Kylaq that stands out for its driving experience. It manages to combine a plush ride over most road imperfections with excellent body control through fast corners. While its absorption is not quite as plush as the Venue’s, it is noticeably better than the Syros’.</p><p>

It delivers the highest level of driver engagement at a very attractive price point, making it the enthusiast’s pick of the trio. Hyundai Venue vs Skoda Kylaq vs Kia Syros - Three of a Kind

They share a segment but not a philosophy. Space, features and driving feel set these compact SUVs apart – we tell you which suits you best.

<p>Whenever you get to keep a car for a couple of months, parting ways is always difficult. But as they say, all good things must come to an end – and so does my time with the Skoda Kylaq. I have come to appreciate the phenomenal ride quality and handling. It has been a great companion for city drives, negotiating tight spaces with ease, absorbing potholes, and keeping me engaged for many kilometres. Even at night, the LED lamps did an excellent job illuminating the road ahead.</p>
<p>As with most cars, the Kylaq has its share of niggles. The one that has irked me most is the sudden jolt when the turbo spools. Despite careful accelerator modulation in slow-moving traffic, it can catch you off guard and launch the car forward like a slingshot. Otherwise, the Kylaq is fairly linear and predictable across the rest of the rev range. The automatic start/stop feature is also not ideal. It tends to shut off the engine even during brief halts in stop-and-go traffic. The system could benefit from a slight delay before putting the engine to rest. I usually drive with the feature turned off.</p>
<p>Having driven the Kylaq more aggressively over the past month, and with other team members piloting it for short periods, the fuel efficiency figures were slightly lower than usual. I managed around 10.5km/l, which isn’t bad. Fortunately, a few early-morning highway runs helped improve that figure.</p>
<p>Skoda has truly built a car that performs well on Indian roads without being heavy on the wallet. As such, I have already recommended it to several buyers in their late 20s and early 30s. </p>

<p>India may soon see more Euro-built cars on its roads as the Indo-EU trade deal moves closer. A major cut in import duty could change what European brands bring to India. That single change could make a big difference to what reaches Indian roads. Several global models stay away only because pricing does not work under the current tax structure. An improbable and highly unlikely scenario, but then who doesn’t fancy a great underdog story? With the Slavia, Skoda India is hatching a similar plan. It's swimming against the SUV tide, and despite all the odds, the Czech carmaker is determined to make sedans great again.</p>

<p>On the face of it, <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/skoda/" target="_blank">Skoda</a> does seem to have done its homework properly with the Slavia. Based on the same MQB A0 IN underpinnings as the Kushaq SUV, the brand-new sedan replaces the ageing Rapid and comes across as a formidable package – the Slavia’s got a stunning design and a potent duo of TSI engine options on offer, and it promises to be an involving car to drive. In addition to that, it’s also got a spacious, well-equipped, and practical cabin. But are these traits good enough to rid Indians of their SUV obsession?</p>

<p><em><strong>High, Wide, &amp; Handsome</strong></em></p>

<p>First things first, the Slavia is one handsome-looking sedan. The design is clearly inspired by the fourth-gen Octavia, which means that the Slavia also looks distinctive and European. At the front, you’ll notice Skoda’s signature butterfly grille with chrome treatment around the edges, while a sleek pair of LED headlamps give it a mini-Octavia-like appearance. The bonnet has sharp creases, giving the car a beefy and masculine appeal.</p>

<p>In terms of dimensions, the Slavia has the longest wheelbase (2,651mm) amongst the competition, and it’s also the widest sedan in the segment. The side profile is quite classy and elegant – as it should be on a Skoda. Bold and prominent character lines run across the length of the car, and a slanting coupe-like roof is one of the main design highlights. There’s a subtle use of chrome, and it’s quite tastefully done. The 16-inch wheels do look a size smaller though, but considering our road conditions, 17-inch wheels&nbsp;would have been overkill – both for the life of the alloys and the ride quality.</p>

<p>Another thing that’s clearly evident is the Slavia’s high-ground clearance of nearly 180mm. Not everyone will like it, but then that’s something of a necessary evil while designing a sedan meant for Indian roads. You can’t win ’em all!</p>

<p>At the back, it’s a familiar sight, as the Slavia’s rear end is bold and distinctive. You get a pair of upmarket-looking split LED taillamps with crystalline effect, and there’s big bold Skoda lettering running across the width of the boot lid. That said, the rear design is probably my least favourite bit –&nbsp;from certain angles, it looks a little out-of-place and slab-sided.</p>

<p>Overall, though, if you talk of the design in general, the <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/skoda/slavia/" target="_blank">Slavia</a> looks very premium, attractive, and ‘pricey’&nbsp;– a scaled-down Octavia, if you will. And this is something that buyers of this segment will definitely appreciate and like about this sedan.</p>

<p><em><strong>Comfort Zone</strong></em></p>

<p>When you step inside the cabin, it’s a familiar affair. The overall design and layout of the dashboard are similar to the Kushaq. The interior has a dual-tone black and beige colour combination, which goes well with the car’s premium positioning. Everything feels well put together – the overall fit-and-finish is great, and the cabin is large, spacious, and practical.</p>

<p>Taking centre stage in this top-end Style variant is the same free-standing 10-inch touchscreen infotainment, with wireless Apple Car Play and Android Auto. As expected, it’s quite intuitive and works beautifully. The screen offers crisp visuals, and the display is super-responsive. The two-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel is similar to that of the Kushaq. And in terms of features and equipment, the Slavia is as well-equipped as its high-riding sibling. You get ventilated front seats, climate control with a touch panel, two USB Type C ports, a sunroof, a wireless phone charger, and more. That said, the Slavia’s interior gets a couple of crucial updates over the Kushaq. For instance, the top variants of the Slavia come with a virtual cockpit digital driver display, which is identical to the one offered in the VW Taigun GT, and the ac vents are now round. Another big update is the new roof liner, which is of better quality and looks more premium than the Kushaq’s.</p>

<p>On the safety front, the Slavia gets dual airbags, electronic stability control, and traction control system as standard on all variants. The top versions get six airbags.</p>

<p>The front seats are supportive and feel quite comfortable over long drives. However, they don’t come with electric adjustments, and we think that it’s a bit of a miss. At the back, the seats are comfy, and there’s loads of legroom. The slanting roofline does eat into the headroom, and passengers above 5’10" will find the roof too close to their heads. There are rear ac vents as well as two USB Type C ports. The transmission hump is nearly flat, and there’s a headrest for the middle passenger. Three passengers can sit comfortably on short drives.</p>

<p>The Slavia’s party piece is its boot space, which has a massive volume of 521 litres! In comparison, the Kushaq’s cargo space is only 385 litres. So, in terms of space and practicality, the Slavia has a clear advantage over its sibling. &nbsp;What’s more, in terms of driving experience, as you’ll see, it’s even better!</p>

<p><em><strong>Pepped Up&nbsp;</strong></em></p>

<p>On offer with the Slavia is the same set of TSI turbo petrol powertrains that does duty in the Kushaq and Taigun. A three-cylinder 1.0-litre and a four-cylinder 1.5-litre unit. Gearbox options include a six-speed manual, a 6-speed torque converter automatic (1.0 TSI), and a seven-speed DSG (1.5 TSI). We got to experience the 1.0 TSI AT and 1.5 TSI MT on this occasion. However, in this review, we’ll only focus on the smaller engine, which Skoda says is going to be the mainstay of the Slavia range.</p>

<p>Since it’s a familiar unit, you more or less know what to expect from this 999cc mill. Performance is more than adequate, and despite the fact the Slavia is slightly heavier than the Kushaq, the 1.0-litre version never feels underpowered. There are mild vibrations at idle, but once you start moving, the engine runs smoother. Below 2,000rpm, there’s a hint of turbo lag, but after that, its progress is rather brisk. As we already know, the mid-range (3.500 – 5,500rpm) is where torque delivery is the meatiest with this engine, but the top-end is also quite strong. Since it’s a free-revving unit, it’s also quite engaging to thrash the motor. Despite being a three-pot motor, it never feels strained.</p>

<p>Shifts are seamless and well-calibrated on the six-speed auto, and you also get paddle shifts to take control. In daily driving, the torque converter actually does a better job than the dual-clutch automatic, as it’s doesn’t lurch in lower gears. When driven enthusiastically, it doesn’t quite have the get-up-and-go attitude of the DSG though.</p>

<p>How does it ride and handle? Excellent! The ride quality is pliant – in fact, the Slavia rides like a bigger, more expensive sedan. At low speeds, you’d feel it’s a tad firm over bumpy roads, but the ride is never unsettled or bouncy. The Slavia glides over broken roads with aplomb. The high-profile rubber and a relatively softer suspension setup do undoubtedly help the Slavia, albeit body roll sets in early when you push it hard in corners. But the good thing is that the Slavia feels confident, planted, and under control all the time. It no longer feels nose-heavy or prone to understeer like its predecessor. Its turn-in is quite sharp, and the steering offers a decent feel and feedback. Not saying it's&nbsp;an outright thriller around corners, but then it’s not a lousy handler either. The Slavia is beautifully balanced, and its ride-and-handling sets new benchmarks in the segment for sure.</p>

<p><em><b>Verdict</b></em></p>

<p>With the Slavia, Skoda has done a tremendous job. And as it claims, there’s still a case for the good old three-box sedan in our market, provided the product ticks all the right boxes. From what I can tell, the Slavia has everything going for it – it looks handsome, the 1.0 TSI motor has enough pull, the driving dynamics are excellent, and it’s a practical, comfortable, and sensible car in every sense of the term. It’s a complete package and one that can definitely rid you of your <a href="https://www.autox.com/suv-cars-in-india/" target="_blank">SUV</a> obsession with its charm and capabilities.</p>
