Skoda Superb Highlights
Skoda's Superb has been a rather popular choice among Indian executive luxury car buyers, for the Skoda Superb price is relatively lower than the equivalent German rivals. Yet again, it's a car that has always been perceived as being capable enough to take on German luxury cars that cost twice as much and offers rivalling space, comfort and tech. 2016, third-generation Superb comes loaded with much more.
The 2016 Superb looks quite stunning. At the front, the slim headlamps with the LED DRLs look sleek with cut-out impressions below them. That wide, butterfly grille looks attractive, while the bonnet gets some sharp lines on it. Along the side, the wheel arches are flared a bit, and there's a sharp beltline that runs the length of the car. Even the 17-inch, turbine fin-like alloy wheels look stunning on the car. At the rear, the huge tail lamps feature C-shaped LED cluster detailing and gel well with the rest of the car's angular, sharp silhouette.
The Skoda Superb variants for the petrol and diesel model are as follows: Style and Laurin & Klement. Features include a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and SmartLink as standard, a panoramic sunroof, bi-xenon headlamps, ambient interior lighting, gesture-controlled boot lid, three-zone climate control, 12-way electric adjust driver seat, a Canton sound system and driver fatigue detection. On the safety front, it gets 8 airbags and electronic stability control, among other features.
Most of the bits on the inside are similar to that of the Octavia – like the instrument panel and centre console. Everything appears well-built and solid. The seats at the rear are huge, comfortable and provide ample support. The wide cabin adds to the feeling of roominess. Being seated in the middle, however, results in the occupant being higher-up, and it also feels a bit cramped. Space at the rear is best for two, although for Skoda Superb on-road price, we expected tremendous space for three passengers. There's also temperature control for the rear AC vent, and two umbrellas – one in each door at the rear. The other interesting feature is the boot-release function. Place your foot under the rear bumper, carrying the key on you - and the boot lid opens up as it is gesture operated.
Engine Specifications & Performance
The Skoda Superb is powered by two engine options: a 1.8-litre petrol engine that produces 177bhp and 250Nm of torque, and a 2.0-litre diesel engine that makes 174bhp and 350Nm of torque. The petrol engine gets the option of either a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 7-speed DSG automatic transmission, while the diesel is only paired to a 6-speed twin-clutch automatic gearbox. The petrol engine is very smooth and powerful, and very quiet at idle. Throttle response is instant, and the gearbox is pretty quick too. Even the diesel engine offers strong performance and loves being driven hard. Refinement levels are quite impressive as well. The electric steering is well weighted, and the car feels planted at high speeds. Ride quality is great, thanks to the softly sprung suspension setup.
The Skoda Superb new model ARAI-certified fuel efficiency figure is rated at 18.19kmpl for the diesel variant and 14.67kpl for the petrol model.
