Tata Motors is testing its autonomous driving technology in Coventry, UK, using a self-driving test module of the&nbsp;Hexa SUV.

<p>Tata’s European technical centre -TMETC, along with Jaguar Land Rover - has collaborated with UK Autodrive, a government backed project in the UK for testing self-driving vehicles. Tata and JLR are joined by Ford in this initiative.</p>

<p>TMETC is putting the autonomous Hexa through its paces on the streets of Coventry. The autonomous Hexa is joined by the Jaguar F-Pace, Range Rover Sport and Ford Mondeo. &nbsp;The research team plans to test public reaction to such vehicles in the Coventry area, and then move to Milton Keynes by the end of 2018.</p>

<p>TMETC and JLR are using specially made&nbsp;GPS connected vehicles that are capable of self-driving. Meanwhile, Ford has already been testing its autonomous tech back in the US for quite some time, and is now planning to extend its research on UK roads as well.</p>

<p>Tata Motors and JLR are also conducting technology trials separately. The autonomous cars being tested are equipped with features like Emergency Vehicle Warning, Intersection Collision Warning, In-Vehicle Signage, Electronic Emergency Brake Light, Intersection Priority Management, and Collaborative Parking system. Since these are test vehicles, they have operators present in them to take over in case of a malfunction in the autonomous system.</p>

<p>Tata’s TMETC has previously also tested an autonomous version of the Tiago in the UK, and has showcased an EV version of the Bolt in 2016 as well. &nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Launched at a starting price of Rs 11.99 lakh, the Tata Hexa is available in six variants and five colour options </strong></p>

<p><a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/tata/">Tata</a> first showcased the Hexa in concept form at the 2015 Geneva Motor show and then at the 2016 Auto Exop last year. Tata’s flagship has finally been launched and is available with two gearbox options. The base XE variants comes with a 2.2-litre engine that churns out 148bhp and 320Nm. This engine comes mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. All other variants come with the same 2.2-litre engine but in the 153bhp/400Nm state of tune. This engine comes paired with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. Now that we have the engine specifications out of the way, let’s take a look at the features each variant has on offer.</p>

<p><strong>XE:</strong></p>

<p>Even the base variant of the <a href="https://www.autox.com/reviews/car-reviews/tata-hexa-review/">Tata Hexa</a> comes well equipped in terms of features. On the outside, it has been fitted with projector headlamps, dual coloured bumpers, integrated rear spoiler and wraparound taillights. On the inside, the Hexa gets what Tata calls the ConnectNext Infotainment system which comes paired with Bluetooth, AUX and USB connectivity. The infotainment system comes paired with a 6-speaker system. Tata has left no scope for complaints with regards to safety features, even in the base variant – front two airbags, ABS, EBD, Corner Stability Control and disc brakes on all four corners. The base Hexa misses out on a few essential features like a rear parking sensor, rear wiper and wash.</p>

<p><strong>XM / XMA:</strong></p>

<p>In addition to all the features on the base variant, the XM trim gets silver skid plates and body coloured ORVMs and door handles. On the inside, the gear shift knob gets chrome highlights. Instead of a standard infotainment system, the XM trim gets a touchscreen unit with an 8-speaker system, voice recognition with SMS readout, and video playback and image viewer. The interior also gets ambient mood lighting. Most importantly, the XM variant with the manual transmission gets Super Drive Modes – Auto, Comfort and Rough Road. The XM trim of the Hexa gets reverse parking sensors, rear wiper and wash too.</p>

<p><strong>XT / XTA / XT 4x4: </strong></p>

<p>Chrome tailgate applique, roof rails, 19-inch machined alloy wheels and front and rear fog lamps. While the XE and the XM variants get fabric upholstery, the XT trims come with leather upholstery. On the infotainment front, the XT, XTA and the XT 4x4 variants come with a 10-speaker audio system. Both these variants get four Super Drive modes – Auto, Comfort, Dynamic and Rough Road. Safety-wise, all these three variants come with dual airbags up front, side and curtain airbags. Additionally, they also get traction control, hill hold control and hill decent control.</p>

<p>The Hexa first made its debut at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show as a concept and then in the production-ready form at the 2016 Auto Expo. With large proportions, flared wheel arches, front and rear scuff plates, the Hexa looks butch as an SUV should be.</p>

<p>In terms of features, it comes heavily loaded including, Daytime Running Lamps, projector headlamps, turn indicators on ORVMs and 19-inch alloy wheels. On the inside it has been fitted with a Harmon-sourced 5-inch touchscreen infotainment that is paired with a 10-speaker JBL system. It also gets a cooler glove box, leather upholstery, electronic climate control and more. Tata has made no compromises in terms of safety and has fitted the Hexa with disc brakes all around, ABS with EBD, hill decent control, cruise control, electronic stability program, airbags and more. The hex gets a standard 7-seat configuration across the range, while the top trim gets an option of 6-seats as well.</p>

<p>At the heart of the Hexa is a 2.2-litre Varicor diesel mill that is available in two power output options. The the XE variant gets a Varicor 320 version that develops 147bhp and 320Nm of torque. the mid and top XM and XT variants get the Varicor 400 version which churns out 153 horses and makes 400Nm of torque. The Hexa is available with a 6-speed manual transmission and comes paired with a 4x4 system as an option in the top XT trim. It has what Tata calls the Super Driving modes with Auto, Comfort, Dynamic and Rough Road settings. There is also a 6-speed automatic transmission on offer in the mid and top trim as the XMA and XTA variants but it doesn't come with 4x4 as yet.</p>

<p>The Hexa will be available with five colour options; Arizona Blue, Tungsten Silver, Pearl White, Platinum Silver and Sky Grey. In the Indian market the Hexa will lock its horns with the Mahindra XUV 500 and the <a href="https://www.autox.com/news/car-news/toyota-innova-crysta-facelift-launched-at-1626-lakh-108712/">Toyota Innova Crysta</a>.</p>

Tata Hexa Launched at Rs 11.99 lakh

The Tata Hexa has been launched for a starting price of Rs. 11.99 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) available with a manual and automatic gearbox and will be sold in XE, XM and XT trims. After a long wait Tata has finally launched the Hexa SUV.

<p>One of the most awaited models from the house of <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/tata/">Tata</a>, the Hexa is about to launched on January 18. But before the Sanand-based car maker officially announces the price of their new product, a leak on their website has let out the price. The website revealed the pricing of the Hexa for a short while before it was pulled off the site. The new Tata Hexa carries an introductory sticker price of Rs 12.30 lakh for the base variant, while the top-spec model is priced at Rs 19.43 lakh (ex-showroom Coimbatore). The Hexa directly competes against the Toyota Innova Crysta, which is priced at Rs 14.22 lakh for the base trim and Rs 21.43 lakh for the top-spec model. The Aria replacement will also lock horns with the Mahindra XUV5OO, which ranges between Rs 2.58 lakh to Rs 18.75 lakh. All prices ex-showroom Coimbatore.</p>

<p>Unlike the Innova Crysta, the Hexa will only be offered with a diesel engine option. The Hexa comes with a 2.2-litre engine which will be offered in two states of tune. The base trim, which will be primarily targeted at the fleet market will produce 148bhp/320Nm while all the other variants will churn out 153bhp and 400Nm. The base XE trim will only be available with a 5-speed manual gearbox, the XM and the XT trims also come with the option of a 6-speed automatic transmission. The top-end manual variant will also come with a 4x4 option with different driving modes to choose from.</p>

<p>Tata Motors has kicked off a pre-launch initiative for its upcoming Hexa MUV in the form their new travelling ‘Hexa Experience Centre’. The Hexa Experience Centre is an event that will be organized across various cities in India that will allow prospective customers to experience the new Tata Hexa first hand. The Gurugram leg of the Hexa Experience Centre is currently being conducted at EO Huda Gurgaon II, Sector 29 between the 25<sup>th</sup> and 27<sup>th</sup> of November.</p>

<p>Tata’s Hexa Experience Centre consists of an off-road circuit featuring various off-road obstacles in the form of axle twisters, slush pits, alternate rumbles, challenging inclines and more to showcase some of capabilities of the Tata Hexa’s torque-on-demand all-wheel drive system sourced from Borg Warner which comes with off-road oriented driving modes for the drivetrain. The system features what Tata calls ‘Super Drive Modes’ featuring four driving modes, namely – Auto, Comfort, Dynamic and Rough Road.</p>

<p>Tata dealerships have commenced booking for the upcoming Tata Hexa for an initial booking amount of Rs. 11,000. The Hexa will be launched in January 2017 which is when Tata will announce the official price of the car. deliveries of the vehicle will also begin shortly after the launch.</p>

<p>The Hexa comes with a Varicor 320 2.2-litre diesel engine that produces 150 bhp and 320Nm of torque which only comes with a 5-speed manual gearbox and is offered in the base XE variant. The XM variant gets a 2.2-litre Varicor 400 engine that produces on ly slightly more power – 156bhp, but 400 Nm of torque. But Tata does provide this version of the engine with a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic.</p>

<p>The XT variant gets the same engine options as the XM, but the manual also gets a 4x4 option that enhances the cars off road ability. This version gets what Tata calls ‘Super Drive Modes’ which are basically driving modes which you can choose from – Auto, Comfort, Rough Road and Dynamic. The 6-speed automatic only gets rear-wheel drive, but gets a mode that <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/tata/">Tata</a> calls ‘Racecar mode’ which holds the engine revs in the power band, i.e. between 3,000-4,000 rpm, to deliver better performance on the road.</p>

<p>Among other features, the Hexa has a 6-speaker Harman surround sound system with JBL speakers, leather feel seats, maximum of 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, ESP, Hill-Descent/Ascent control, automatic climate control, and will be offered with a 6 or 7 seating option on all variants and trims.</p>

<p>The Tata Hexa will compete against the Mahindra XUV500 and the <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/toyota/innova-crysta/">Toyota Innova Crysta</a>.</p>

<p>Tata will offer the Hexa with a 6-speed manual gearbox that comes with 4X4 drive system and what Tata is calling ‘Super Drive Modes’ which allow the driver to chose between Auto, Comfort, Dynamic and Rough Road settings depending on the requirement. The modes change the characteristics of the Hexa in a combination of ESP, engine performance, and Torque on Demand (TOD) functions.</p>

<p>The Hexa will also get an all new 6-speed automatic transmission which sends power to only the rear wheels. The automatic variant of the Hexa also has a “Racecar Function” which keeps the engine is the power-band (between 3,000-4000 rpm) for added performance.</p>

<p>The Hexa comes leaded with equipment that are just too many to count. On the exterior, the Hexa has twin barrel automatic projector headlamps, with front fog lamps and DRLs, electronically adjustable and foldable ORVMs with demister.</p>

<p>Additionally, the interior of the Tata Hexa is offered with a six or seven seat configuration with the seats being finished in leather-feel upholstery with contrast stitching. Customisable mood lighting, sun blinds for the rear windows, many storage spaces around the cabin in addition to a separate cooled glove box at the front and 12V power outlets and AC vents for all three seating rows. are also included in the Hexa’s package.</p>

<p>The centre console houses the ConnectNext Infotainment system by Harman which features a total of 10 speakers including tweeters, central dashboard speaker and a subwoofer. The system includes AUX-IN &amp; USB, Bluetooth connectivity, steering mounted controls, smart phone navigation and 7 multi utility apps integrated with the smartphone function.</p>

While details of the new powertrain have not yet been revealed, the Hexa is expected to be powered by the 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel engine that also powers the Tata Safari Storme.</p>

<p>However, unlike the Safari, the <a href="https://www.autox.com/reviews/car-reviews/tata-hexa-review/">Tata Hexa</a> will be offered with both manual and automatic gearbox options from the word go. Additionally, borrowing from its Land Rover brand, the Hexa is aiming to revolutionise its segment by offering delectable driving modes that are standard features on Land Rover products. So, in the Tata Hexa, customers will have the option of choosing between four different driving modes – Auto, Comfort, Dynamic and Rough Road. In fact, it even features first-in-race mapping in the automatic variants of the car that the manufacturer claims will give the Tata Hexa race car like driving feel.</p>

<p>In the Auto mode, the car’s computer automatically varies the cars driving systems based on the road conditions to allow for maximum traction and stability. While in comfort mode, the cars systems are tuned for additional comfort and efficiency, which can be quite effective on long highway journeys. The real fun, however, begins with the Dynamic mode where the engine is tuned for maximum performance and drivability, and also aids in handling to deliver maximum performance to the driver. Additionally, the Dynamic mode also relaxes the Tata Hexa’s ESP system to intervene later and provide additional control to an enthusiastic driver.</p>

<p>And keeping in mind the versatility of the Tata Hexa, the final mode – Rough Road mode – allows the Hexa to tackle bad road and challenging driving conditions with aplomb, allowing for braking performance to be tuned according to the loose road surface, as well as, allowing the driver progressive control in tough and slippery conditions.</p>

<p>Tata infact claims that the Tata Hexa will come with class-leading features, as well as high-quality interiors, and with the driving modes being a novelty and the progress seen in the quality and engineering levels of Tata’s new range of vehicles, the Hexa has the potential to give the Innova Crysta a tough challenge.</p>
