The Volvo EX30 is a curious case. On the one hand, it’s the most affordable luxury EV that you can buy in the country. On the other hand, it feels a bit half-baked. As a result, this quirky Volvo finds itself in a tricky spot, especially in a market full of capable EVs. That said, the EX30 isn’t a complete washout. In fact, it has a lot of tricks up its sleeve.</p>

<p>‘This is, by far, the best electric vehicle to push for a fast lap around the BIC from the current lineup!’ – that was Dhruv’s verdict after spending just 10 minutes in the car. This is clearly reflected in its lap times. <p>For an EV, the EX30 handles remarkably well. It has ample grip and gusto. Its 268bhp and 343Nm motor rockets it from 0 to 100km/h in just 5.3 seconds, and since it’s driven by the rear wheels, it nicely rotates from the back instead of understeering. Unlike other EVs, the electronics do not intervene abruptly. Most EVs sap power as soon as you turn the steering wheel even slightly, but not the EX30 – it feeds the right amount of power to the wheels to maintain momentum while keeping grip in check, ensuring that you stay off the barriers. Its direct steering and taut suspension play along, resulting in a rewarding driving experience.</p>

<p>It’s also undeniably stylish. Quirky, yes, but with plenty of X-factor. However, marketing it as an SUV is a bit of a stretch – it’s more of a hatchback. Step inside, and you’ll quickly realise this. The rear compartment is tight, the floor is high, and there’s virtually no space for average-sized adults in the back. Up front, it oozes style, but Volvo has clearly cut corners in the name of minimalism. There are no power window switches on the doors. Plus, a touchscreen handles most functions, including adjusting the ORVMs and opening the glovebox. There’s no driver display either. <p>All things considered, the EX30 has its flaws, but it’s a likeable EV simply because of how well it drives. At an asking price of  ₹41 lakh, however, driving prowess alone won’t be enough for it to survive a market crowded with cutthroat rivals from all corners of the world.

The XC70 can cover over 200 kilometres on electric power alone under the CLTC cycle, marking it as the plug-in hybrid with the highest electric range in Volvo’s current series. It is positioned between the XC60 and XC90 models, aimed at buyers who want to gradually switch to electric driving. At first glance, it may look more like a hatchback than a compact SUV, but if you come to think of it, that’s not a criticism. Its proportions are tight and athletic, giving it a modern stance that balances tradition with futuristic appeal.</p><p>

    </p><p>On the road, the EX30 feels quick yet composed. It doesn’t have the neck-snapping acceleration of the twin-motor EX40, but it’s far from boring. The acceleration is brisk, and it doesn’t taper off even when you’re doing triple digit speeds. Refinement levels are excellent, and performance is effortless across all conditions. Volvo claims a 480km range on the WLTP cycle. In the real world, you can expect around 350–380km per charge, which should be more than adequate for daily use.</p>

<h2>Volvo EX30: Ride &amp; Handling</h2>

<p>What impressed me the most about the EX30 is its ride quality. On rough and uneven roads, the suspension absorbed bumps confidently without unsettling the cabin. The ride is firm, but never uncomfortable, and even big potholes only make themselves felt at low speeds.</p><p>

<p>Handling is equally commendable. Despite being a heavy EV, the EX30 remains stable and composed through corners. Grip levels are impressive, and while the steering feels somewhat vague and lifeless, it still responds faithfully to inputs. Again, it won’t set your heart racing, but on a daily basis, it will keep you entertained.</p>

<h2>Volvo EX30: It's not perfect though…</h2>

<p>As good as the EX30 is, it has its share of oddities. Like many modern EVs, physical controls are almost entirely gone. Even basic functions like ORVM adjustments and the speedometer are buried in menus. Thankfully, though, the interface is intuitive.</p><p>

<p>Among other irritations, there isn’t a physical key fob offered; instead Volvo provides only an NFC card or smartphone app. During our test, we only had the NFC card, which meant we had to swipe it every time to lock and unlock the vehicle – yes, there’s no keyless functionality either!But that’s not where it ends. You also need to put the NFC card at a designated space, next to the wireless charger, to turn the ignition on – all the time! So, essentially, there’s no keyless start/stop either. What’s more, in the name of minimalism, Volvo had made the cabin a little too quirky and impractical. For example, the power window switches have been moved from the doors to the centre console, while the glove box is tucked below the dashboard and can only be accessed from the touchscreen. And, lastly, there’s no driver display. All the information, including the speed, range, etc., is relayed through the touchscreen. You kind of feel that Volvo has gone a little too far…</p><p>

    The fit-and-finish levels, too, aren’t the best. While most of the materials used inside are sustainable, the dashboard plastics don’t feel very premium and come across as slightly tacky.</p>







<p>And, lastly, the rear seat experience – it is this Volvo’s Achilles Heel. The raised floor compromises legroom and knee room, forcing passengers into a knees-up position. For longer journeys, this will be uncomfortable.</p>

<h2>Verdict</h2>

<p>The biggest strength of the EX30 is going to be its pricing. Expected to fall between ₹35–40 lakh ex-showroom, it will not only be the most affordable Volvo, but also the most affordable luxury car in India. If Volvo can manage an on-road price in the ₹42–45 lakh range, the EX30 will become an extremely tempting proposition.</p><p>

Volvo has launched the updated XC60 SUV in India. While the powertrain remains the same, the SUV gets subtle cosmetic upgrades.

<p>Volvo has launched the XC60 Facelift in India at an ex-showroom price of Rs 71.90 lakh. While the powertrain remains the same, the SUV's exterior and interior have seen some notable upgrades. To begin with the exterior,&nbsp;the grille now features diagonal slats instead of vertical ones. The revised SUV also comes equipped with newly designed 19-inch alloy wheels. Globally, the SUV is available with three new colour options:&nbsp;Forest Lake, Aurora Silver, and&nbsp;Mulberry Red, and has reworked bumpers and taillamps with a smoked-out effect. Volvo has introduced the updated XC60 SUV in India at an ex-showroom price of Rs 71.90. While the powertrain remains the same, the SUV gets subtle cosmetic upgrades. 

<p>The petrol derivative of the Volvo XC40 is a classic case of being caught between a rock and a hard place. On one side, it has the German trio of Audi Q3, BMW X1, and Mercedes-Benz GLA to tackle with. And, on the other, its very own green-and-mean sibling – the XC40 Recharge – has conveniently taken the limelight away from it, thanks to the latter’s electrifying performance and tempting price tag.</p>

<p>Now, to get it out of the tough spot, Volvo spruced things up a little for the gasoline-powered XC40 late last year by stuffing it with more features, along with mild-hybrid tech. So, can the petrol-powered XC40 still make a case for itself?&nbsp;</p>

<h2>Volvo XC40 Design &amp; Interior&nbsp;Updates</h2>

<p>For a design that has been around for nearly seven years, the XC40 has aged rather gracefully. With its compact shape, taut lines, and chic design, the XC40 draws attention without trying too hard. That said, the 2023 update has, quite surprisingly, taken some of its sheens away instead of adding more. You no longer get the R-Design trim, meaning no dual-tone paint scheme or diamond-cut gloss black alloy wheels. Instead, you get plain (read ‘boring’) looking 5-spoke silver-finish alloy wheels, which seem to belong in 2013 rather than 2023.</p>

<p>There are, however, new design elements, which include re-profiled LED headlamps, a more angular bumper, and a slightly different fog-lamp design. Around the sides and back, not much has changed, except for a new B4 badge in place of the T4 of the old model. So, there’s no mistaking this little Volvo for anything else.</p>

<p>Inside, the updates are slightly more prominent. While the dash design and overall layout are more or less unchanged, it now gets an Orrefors crystal gear lever, like bigger and more expensive Volvos. Another new addition is the in-built Google-powered OS, which means you’ve got Android Auto running by default in this vehicle all the time. So, be it Google Maps, Apps, or Voice Assistance Systems, you’ve got it all. And everything works seamlessly.</p>

<p>The 9-inch touchscreen is unchanged and is still one of the best in the business – it’s crisp and high-definition. However, it still has the same old problems. First, it’s a bit difficult to get the hang of it. and second, the touch AC controls aren’t very practical. Also, while Apple CarPlay is available, it’s not wireless. A bit of a miss, I’d say, for a car that costs Rs 50+ lakh. However, the audio quality of the 14-speaker Harmon Kardon sound system will certainly help boost your mood.</p>

<p>Being a Volvo, the XC40 has a strong safety suite and also gets driver assistance systems, such as adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, pilot assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert with forward and rear collision mitigation. For a change, these features don’t feel as intrusive as they used to earlier, so it seems some effort has gone into making this system India-friendly.</p>

<p>The quality and fit-and-finish levels are unimpeachable. Although, the all-black interior does look a little drab. You can, however, spec the XC40 with a lighter beige / grey theme. The front seats are large and accommodating, although I didn’t find them comfortable just after a day of driving. At the back, the space is decent, but the rear bench has virtually no under-thigh support and is criminally poor – it feels like a compromise if I’m honest.&nbsp;</p>

<h2>Volvo XC40 Engine Performance: Putting it Mildly</h2>

<p>Under the hood, the XC40 B4 gets the same 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine as earlier, albeit with a ‘mild’ update in the form of a 48V battery, along with an ISG or integrated starter generator. As a result, there is a small bump in the power output, as the engine now produces 194bhp (+7bhp), which is transmitted to the front wheels via an 8-speed automatic. Torque remains unchanged at 300Nm.</p>

<p>Right off the bat, you can sense the mild-hybrid tech at work. At idle, the XC40 is electric-car silent with next to no noise filtering into the cabin. As you set off, you’ll feel a bit of push or assistance from the electric architecture to the petrol engine. However, it isn’t enough to mask the turbo lag of the engine below 1,500rpm.</p>

<p>Once the turbo spools, the petrol engine takes complete charge, and it does that job well. The power delivery is smooth and linear. The acceleration isn’t exactly punchy as you would find in some of its rivals, but it’s adequately brisk. The 8-speed auto is smooth, although it’s a bit relaxed in nature. Let’s just say that it won’t lose its sleep over shaving off a tenth or two from your timed acceleration runs! Paddle shifters aren’t available with this auto tranny, and I for one missed it sorely, especially while driving in the ghats of Lonavala.</p>

<p>What impressed me the most was the fuel efficiency. Over the course of the entire trip, I managed to get nearly 14km/l from this engine. Of course, if you drive like a hooligan, it drops substantially. But settle in for a steady cruise, and it rewards you with astonishing fuel economy numbers.</p>

<p>In terms of ride or handling, there isn’t anything remarkably different from the previous iteration. The ride quality is pliant – there’s a touch of firmness at low speeds but not to the extent of becoming objectionable. At high speeds, the stability is phenomenal, and it takes everything from bumps to potholes in its stride with aplomb.</p>

<p>The handling is neutral, the grip is adequate, and the steering is a bit numb but precise. Overall, the XC40 remains well-behaved for the most part. Only when you push it hard around hills that you notice that it isn’t quite a willing companion for such antics. It tends to understeer and struggle for grip quite early on in such scenarios.&nbsp;</p>

<h2>Volvo XC40: Verdict</h2>

<p>On the face of it, the updated XC40 may look like a mere nip-and-tuck job, but it has more (new) substance underneath. Not to mention, despite being based on an old platform, it somehow manages to look and feel up-to-date. What’s more, it also undercuts its main rivals by a fair margin. What pulls it back slightly, though, is its dismal rear-seat comfort, an average driving experience, and Volvo’s limited reach. However, if those things aren’t of any concern to you, the XC40 is still the ideal entry-level luxury SUV. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>
