<p>The new XC60 is perhaps an under-estimated car. Only after driving the car one can really appreciate its capabilities and, in my opinion, can easily challenge the mid-size German SUVs in the market, like the GLC, Q5 and the X3 from BMW.</p>


Looks like XC90

<p>XC60 looks like the baby version of XC90. Very futuristic looks, and my favourite detail is the LED headlamp design. In the night, it looks simply beautiful. At first, I could not identify the car in the dark.</p>

The Volvo EX30 is a curious case. On the one hand, it’s the most affordable luxury EV that you can buy in the country. On the other hand, it feels a bit half-baked. As a result, this quirky Volvo finds itself in a tricky spot, especially in a market full of capable EVs. That said, the EX30 isn’t a complete washout. In fact, it has a lot of tricks up its sleeve.</p>

<p>‘This is, by far, the best electric vehicle to push for a fast lap around the BIC from the current lineup!’ – that was Dhruv’s verdict after spending just 10 minutes in the car. This is clearly reflected in its lap times. <p>For an EV, the EX30 handles remarkably well. It has ample grip and gusto. Its 268bhp and 343Nm motor rockets it from 0 to 100km/h in just 5.3 seconds, and since it’s driven by the rear wheels, it nicely rotates from the back instead of understeering. Unlike other EVs, the electronics do not intervene abruptly. Most EVs sap power as soon as you turn the steering wheel even slightly, but not the EX30 – it feeds the right amount of power to the wheels to maintain momentum while keeping grip in check, ensuring that you stay off the barriers. Its direct steering and taut suspension play along, resulting in a rewarding driving experience.</p>

<p>It’s also undeniably stylish. Quirky, yes, but with plenty of X-factor. However, marketing it as an SUV is a bit of a stretch – it’s more of a hatchback. Step inside, and you’ll quickly realise this. The rear compartment is tight, the floor is high, and there’s virtually no space for average-sized adults in the back. Up front, it oozes style, but Volvo has clearly cut corners in the name of minimalism. There are no power window switches on the doors. Plus, a touchscreen handles most functions, including adjusting the ORVMs and opening the glovebox. There’s no driver display either. <p>All things considered, the EX30 has its flaws, but it’s a likeable EV simply because of how well it drives. At an asking price of  ₹41 lakh, however, driving prowess alone won’t be enough for it to survive a market crowded with cutthroat rivals from all corners of the world.

<p>Volvo has introduced the new XC70 plug-in hybrid SUV, which offers a long electric-only driving range. The XC70 can cover over 200 kilometres on electric power alone under the CLTC cycle, marking it as the plug-in hybrid with the highest electric range in Volvo’s current series. It is positioned between the XC60 and XC90 models, aimed at buyers who want to gradually switch to electric driving. At first glance, it may look more like a hatchback than a compact SUV, but if you come to think of it, that’s not a criticism. Its proportions are tight and athletic, giving it a modern stance that balances tradition with futuristic appeal.</p><p>

    </p><p>On the road, the EX30 feels quick yet composed. It doesn’t have the neck-snapping acceleration of the twin-motor EX40, but it’s far from boring. The acceleration is brisk, and it doesn’t taper off even when you’re doing triple digit speeds. Refinement levels are excellent, and performance is effortless across all conditions. Volvo claims a 480km range on the WLTP cycle. In the real world, you can expect around 350–380km per charge, which should be more than adequate for daily use.</p>

<h2>Volvo EX30: Ride &amp; Handling</h2>

<p>What impressed me the most about the EX30 is its ride quality. On rough and uneven roads, the suspension absorbed bumps confidently without unsettling the cabin. The ride is firm, but never uncomfortable, and even big potholes only make themselves felt at low speeds.</p><p>

<p>Handling is equally commendable. Despite being a heavy EV, the EX30 remains stable and composed through corners. Grip levels are impressive, and while the steering feels somewhat vague and lifeless, it still responds faithfully to inputs. Again, it won’t set your heart racing, but on a daily basis, it will keep you entertained.</p>

<h2>Volvo EX30: Interior, Features, &amp; Safety</h2>

<p>Inside, the EX30 follows a minimalistic approach, in line with Volvo’s design philosophy. The cabin feels airy and clean, with clever storage solutions and high levels of comfort up front. The electrically adjustable front seats offer excellent support and space. Technology and safety are big highlights.</p><p>

<h2>Volvo EX30: It's not perfect though…</h2>

<p>As good as the EX30 is, it has its share of oddities. Like many modern EVs, physical controls are almost entirely gone. Even basic functions like ORVM adjustments and the speedometer are buried in menus. Thankfully, though, the interface is intuitive.</p><p>

<p>Among other irritations, there isn’t a physical key fob offered; instead Volvo provides only an NFC card or smartphone app. During our test, we only had the NFC card, which meant we had to swipe it every time to lock and unlock the vehicle – yes, there’s no keyless functionality either!But that’s not where it ends. You also need to put the NFC card at a designated space, next to the wireless charger, to turn the ignition on – all the time! So, essentially, there’s no keyless start/stop either. What’s more, in the name of minimalism, Volvo had made the cabin a little too quirky and impractical. For example, the power window switches have been moved from the doors to the centre console, while the glove box is tucked below the dashboard and can only be accessed from the touchscreen. And, lastly, there’s no driver display. All the information, including the speed, range, etc., is relayed through the touchscreen. You kind of feel that Volvo has gone a little too far…</p><p>

    The fit-and-finish levels, too, aren’t the best. While most of the materials used inside are sustainable, the dashboard plastics don’t feel very premium and come across as slightly tacky.</p>







<p>And, lastly, the rear seat experience – it is this Volvo’s Achilles Heel. The raised floor compromises legroom and knee room, forcing passengers into a knees-up position. For longer journeys, this will be uncomfortable.</p>

<h2>Verdict</h2>

<p>The biggest strength of the EX30 is going to be its pricing. Expected to fall between ₹35–40 lakh ex-showroom, it will not only be the most affordable Volvo, but also the most affordable luxury car in India. If Volvo can manage an on-road price in the ₹42–45 lakh range, the EX30 will become an extremely tempting proposition.</p><p>

Volvo’s most-affordable luxury EV has arrived in style, but has it got the substance to go the distance? We drive it to find out.

Volvo XC60 Facelift Launched in India with Mild Hybrid Powertrain

Volvo has launched the updated XC60 SUV in India. While the powertrain remains the same, the SUV gets subtle cosmetic upgrades.

<p>Volvo has launched the XC60 Facelift in India at an ex-showroom price of Rs 71.90 lakh. While the powertrain remains the same, the SUV's exterior and interior have seen some notable upgrades. To begin with the exterior,&nbsp;the grille now features diagonal slats instead of vertical ones. The revised SUV also comes equipped with newly designed 19-inch alloy wheels. Globally, the SUV is available with three new colour options:&nbsp;Forest Lake, Aurora Silver, and&nbsp;Mulberry Red, and has reworked bumpers and taillamps with a smoked-out effect. Volvo has introduced the updated XC60 SUV in India at an ex-showroom price of Rs 71.90. While the powertrain remains the same, the SUV gets subtle cosmetic upgrades. 

<p><b>We spent a day with Volvo’s all-new mid-sized SUV, XC60 only to realise that it is hard to find fault with</b></p>

<p>Over the past two years, Volvo has really upped their game. And their products speak for themselves – right from the XC90, S90 or even the relatively niche S60 Polestar and the V90 Cross Country. While all of these are impressive products in themselves, their best-selling model has always been the XC60. Volvo claims that nearly 30 percent of their overall sales in India is thanks to this mid-sized SUV. It is no wonder then, that Volvo has a lot of hopes from the newest version of the XC60. First unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show, the XC60 is all set to be launched in India on December 12. We got a chance to spend a day with it and find out if it can live up to the expectations.</p>

<p><b>Design discussion</b></p>

<p>The first thing that really strikes about the new XC60 is its design. Just like all the new-generation Volvo models on sale, this one too has elegance written all over it. The vertical slat chrome grille, Thor Hammer headlight to the long L-shaped taillights, are some of the design cues that have become a signature of all the new Volvo models. Keeping in mind that Volvo will only be launching the Inscription trim to start with, all of these design features are standard. And despite that, the XC60 manages to set itself apart from its larger sibling. The bonnet curves in slightly towards the edge, the sharp indent on the lower half of the door and the raked-out C-pillar helps it build a persona that is separate from the XC90. The XC60 has been fitted with 10-spoke 19-inch alloy wheels as standard.</p>

<p><b>On the inside</b></p>

<p>If you have experienced any of the new-generation Volvo models, on the inside the XC60 will feel like a familiar office. It has the same steering wheel that we have already seen on the XC90, S90 and more recently the V90 Cross Country. In fact, it also gets the vertically stacked 9.0-inch touchscreen unit that is the command system for almost every function of the car. So, from controlling your infotainment options, displaying feed off the reversing camera, to activating the long list of safety features, this screen does it all. Fidgeting with the air-con on this touchscreen does require you to take your eyes off the road though. We have said this for the other Volvos too, and we will say it again – we wish the XC60 came with buttons and knobs for the air-con controls. The dashboard is draped in black Nappa leather at the top and soft touch plastic at the bottom with unlacquered wood finish splitting the two. Volvo offers three colour options for the upholstery – Maroon Brown, Amber, and Blond.</p>

<p>Front and back, the seats are amply supportive and comfortable. The driver, as well as the passenger, get ventilated seats with massage function. Funnily, passengers at the back only get heated seats. &nbsp;Speaking of which, the rear door doesn’t open wide enough to make ingress and egress a rather smooth affair.</p>

<p>The XC60 gets all the features that you’d expect from a car in this class. As you’d come to expect from a Volvo, the XC60 too comes with a brochure full of safety features like Blind Spot information, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, 360-degree camera, semi-automatic parking and more.</p>

<p><b>Engine equation</b></p>

<p>Although internationally, the new Volvo XC60 comes with several engine options, here in India we will only get the 2.0-litre diesel at the time of launch. The XC60 in the D5 form produces 232bhp and 480Nm. All of this power is put down to the road in a very linear manner. In fact, even with its near two-ton weight, it feels energetic and rather quick to gain speeds. One of the biggest let downs with most diesel offerings is the turbo lag, but Volvo has managed to develop a smart solution that overcomes the issue. The XC60 comes with what the Swedish carmaker calls PowerPulse technology. With the help of an air compressor, this system pumps more air into the engine which results in a relatively immediate power delivery. The engine feels its best in its mid-range where it has enough and more energy on tap. The most impressive thing about the XC60 is just how refined the engine is. Irrespective of your speed, the powerplant doesn’t feel under stress and you won’t hear even a hint of discomfort inside the cabin. Of course, due credit must also be given to the insulation for inside the cabin. The XC60 is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission that shifts smoothly but it isn’t the fastest box out there.</p>

<p>Volvo has fitted the XC60 with air suspension on all four corners. It allows the mid-sized SUV to offer a phenomenal ride quality. Although we didn’t get a chance to drive the XC60 off-road, en route to our shoot location, we did encounter some pretty bad roads but the XC60 managed it all with astonishing plushness. The 223mm of ground clearance at full stretch meant that the underbelly doesn’t scrape either. As far as handling is concerned, the XC60 manages well for the most part, but there is still that floaty feeling from the air-suspension that robs away some of the fun. Having said, Volvo has clearly tuned the suspension to be a lot sportier on this one than the luxury-centric XC90.</p>

<p>Even after spending a day on board, the 2017 Volvo XC60 is a car that is hard to find faults in. From design and features to comfort and performance, it does everything with such amazing efficiency that Volvo will surely not have to work hard to sell it. Volvo has only introduced the XC60 in the top-spec Inscription trim. Priced at Rs 55.90 lakh, it demands a few lakh more than its immediate rivals Audi Q5 and the BMW X3. Here it is important to note that both these cars are due for an update next year and more importantly, the XC60 is noticeably better equipped than its rivals in the&nbsp;discussion. With the new Q5 and X3 expected to be launched in a few months time, Volvo has timed the launch perfectly. But the fun will only begin when updated versions of both these cars get launched. Till then, Volvo can enjoy the first mover's advantage.&nbsp;</p>
