The Volvo EX30 is a curious case. On the one hand, it’s the most affordable luxury EV that you can buy in the country. On the other hand, it feels a bit half-baked. As a result, this quirky Volvo finds itself in a tricky spot, especially in a market full of capable EVs. That said, the EX30 isn’t a complete washout. In fact, it has a lot of tricks up its sleeve.</p>

<p>‘This is, by far, the best electric vehicle to push for a fast lap around the BIC from the current lineup!’ – that was Dhruv’s verdict after spending just 10 minutes in the car. This is clearly reflected in its lap times. <p>For an EV, the EX30 handles remarkably well. It has ample grip and gusto. Its 268bhp and 343Nm motor rockets it from 0 to 100km/h in just 5.3 seconds, and since it’s driven by the rear wheels, it nicely rotates from the back instead of understeering. Unlike other EVs, the electronics do not intervene abruptly. Most EVs sap power as soon as you turn the steering wheel even slightly, but not the EX30 – it feeds the right amount of power to the wheels to maintain momentum while keeping grip in check, ensuring that you stay off the barriers. Its direct steering and taut suspension play along, resulting in a rewarding driving experience.</p>

<p>It’s also undeniably stylish. Quirky, yes, but with plenty of X-factor. However, marketing it as an SUV is a bit of a stretch – it’s more of a hatchback. Step inside, and you’ll quickly realise this. The rear compartment is tight, the floor is high, and there’s virtually no space for average-sized adults in the back. Up front, it oozes style, but Volvo has clearly cut corners in the name of minimalism. There are no power window switches on the doors. Plus, a touchscreen handles most functions, including adjusting the ORVMs and opening the glovebox. There’s no driver display either. <p>All things considered, the EX30 has its flaws, but it’s a likeable EV simply because of how well it drives. At an asking price of  ₹41 lakh, however, driving prowess alone won’t be enough for it to survive a market crowded with cutthroat rivals from all corners of the world.

<p>Volvo has introduced the new XC70 plug-in hybrid SUV, which offers a long electric-only driving range. The XC70 can cover over 200 kilometres on electric power alone under the CLTC cycle, marking it as the plug-in hybrid with the highest electric range in Volvo’s current series. It is positioned between the XC60 and XC90 models, aimed at buyers who want to gradually switch to electric driving. <p>There was a time when electric vehicles had that certain X-factor, but with the recent onslaught of EVs coming from virtually all corners of the world, they have lost some of that charm. The problem is, they all look, feel, and to a great extent, drive the same. Otherworldly appearances, tech-laden cabins, and insane straight line speeds – it’s a common theme with all EVs. At first glance, it may look more like a hatchback than a compact SUV, but if you come to think of it, that’s not a criticism. Its proportions are tight and athletic, giving it a modern stance that balances tradition with futuristic appeal.</p><p>

    </p><p>On the road, the EX30 feels quick yet composed. It doesn’t have the neck-snapping acceleration of the twin-motor EX40, but it’s far from boring. The acceleration is brisk, and it doesn’t taper off even when you’re doing triple digit speeds. Refinement levels are excellent, and performance is effortless across all conditions. Volvo claims a 480km range on the WLTP cycle. In the real world, you can expect around 350–380km per charge, which should be more than adequate for daily use.</p>

<h2>Volvo EX30: Ride &amp; Handling</h2>

<p>What impressed me the most about the EX30 is its ride quality. On rough and uneven roads, the suspension absorbed bumps confidently without unsettling the cabin. The ride is firm, but never uncomfortable, and even big potholes only make themselves felt at low speeds.</p><p>

<p>Handling is equally commendable. Despite being a heavy EV, the EX30 remains stable and composed through corners. Grip levels are impressive, and while the steering feels somewhat vague and lifeless, it still responds faithfully to inputs. Again, it won’t set your heart racing, but on a daily basis, it will keep you entertained.</p>

<h2>Volvo EX30: It's not perfect though…</h2>

<p>As good as the EX30 is, it has its share of oddities. Like many modern EVs, physical controls are almost entirely gone. Even basic functions like ORVM adjustments and the speedometer are buried in menus. Thankfully, though, the interface is intuitive.</p><p>

<p>Among other irritations, there isn’t a physical key fob offered; instead Volvo provides only an NFC card or smartphone app. During our test, we only had the NFC card, which meant we had to swipe it every time to lock and unlock the vehicle – yes, there’s no keyless functionality either!But that’s not where it ends. You also need to put the NFC card at a designated space, next to the wireless charger, to turn the ignition on – all the time! So, essentially, there’s no keyless start/stop either. What’s more, in the name of minimalism, Volvo had made the cabin a little too quirky and impractical. For example, the power window switches have been moved from the doors to the centre console, while the glove box is tucked below the dashboard and can only be accessed from the touchscreen. And, lastly, there’s no driver display. All the information, including the speed, range, etc., is relayed through the touchscreen. You kind of feel that Volvo has gone a little too far…</p><p>

    The fit-and-finish levels, too, aren’t the best. While most of the materials used inside are sustainable, the dashboard plastics don’t feel very premium and come across as slightly tacky.</p>







<p>And, lastly, the rear seat experience – it is this Volvo’s Achilles Heel. The raised floor compromises legroom and knee room, forcing passengers into a knees-up position. For longer journeys, this will be uncomfortable.</p>

<h2>Verdict</h2>

<p>The biggest strength of the EX30 is going to be its pricing. Expected to fall between ₹35–40 lakh ex-showroom, it will not only be the most affordable Volvo, but also the most affordable luxury car in India. If Volvo can manage an on-road price in the ₹42–45 lakh range, the EX30 will become an extremely tempting proposition.</p><p>

Volvo has launched the updated XC60 SUV in India. While the powertrain remains the same, the SUV gets subtle cosmetic upgrades.

<p>Volvo has launched the XC60 Facelift in India at an ex-showroom price of Rs 71.90 lakh. While the powertrain remains the same, the SUV's exterior and interior have seen some notable upgrades. To begin with the exterior,&nbsp;the grille now features diagonal slats instead of vertical ones. The revised SUV also comes equipped with newly designed 19-inch alloy wheels. Globally, the SUV is available with three new colour options:&nbsp;Forest Lake, Aurora Silver, and&nbsp;Mulberry Red, and has reworked bumpers and taillamps with a smoked-out effect. <p>Volvo may not have the volumes or network of its big three German rivals, but it more than makes up for it with style, elegance, and luxury. From the entry-level <a href="https://www.autox.com/reviews/car-reviews/volvo-xc40-t4-r-design-review-first-drive-107119/">XC40</a> and <a href="https://www.autox.com/reviews/car-reviews/2021-volvo-s60-review-first-drive-108783/">S60</a> to the flagship <a href="https://www.autox.com/news/car-news/2021-volvo-xc90-mild-hybrid-launched-at-rs-8990-lakh-110320/">XC90</a> and S90, each Volvo, without a doubt, is in a class of its own.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While all present-day Volvos are gob-smacking, it’s the XC60 that’s more popular than others. After its launch in 2017, the XC60 quickly went on to become the winningest product for Volvo. Soon after its arrival, it bagged the 2018 World Car of the Year award, which was followed by strong sales numbers, propelling it to become the best-selling Volvo product in the world. It lost that title only recently to the XC40, as the baby Volvo registered marginally higher numbers than the <a href="https://www.autox.com/track-test/volvo-xc60-track-test-104943/">XC60</a> in the first half of 2021. Still, the XC60 remains as popular as ever.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>What’s New?</strong></p>

<p>The diesel is gone, and in its place comes a new 247bhp and 350Nm-developing 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. There’s a shinier front grille, a new bumper design (if you care to notice, that is), and newly designed 19-inch alloy wheels. The exhaust pipes are now hidden under the rear bumper to give the XC60’s derrière a seamless look. The changes are minimal, of course, but it also means that the XC60 is as stunning as ever.</p>

<p>Inside, everything remains more or less the same, albeit the 9-inch touchscreen system is now powered by Google – think of it as an in-built Android Auto. There’s a four-year subscription, and the screen works flawlessly. The 12.3-inch digital driver display shows Google Maps/navigation directly in front of your eyes – it’s a cool and convenient addition. Surprisingly, there’s no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto connectivity available as yet. That aside, the cabin is a work of art. The seats are very comfortable, and the interior definitely feels more special than its direct rivals. There’s just one fully-loaded variant on offer.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Better to Drive than the Diesel?</strong></p>

<p>If you care about the environment, well, then the answer is a resounding yes! But in terms of outright grunt, the new petrol powertrain does leave you wanting more. You no longer get the sudden mid-range kick of the 480Nm-producing diesel unit. That said, the petrol has a clear advantage in terms of refinement, and thanks to mild-hybrid tech, it’s more responsive at city speeds. The power delivery is smooth and linear, but it lacks urgency. Even when you put your foot down, the pace builds up rather leisurely.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The 8-speed torque converter is tuned for comfort too, and it doesn’t like to be rushed into doing things. No paddle-shifters are on offer, albeit you can shift manually. It’s not meant to be driven hurriedly though. The whole point of this <a href="https://www.autox.com/suv-cars-in-india/" target="_blank">SUV</a> is comfort and luxury, so there’s no need to drive it like a maniac.<br />

When driven leisurely, you’ll also see the powertrain return amazing fuel efficiency – with a full tank (71 litres), it showed a range of 860kms during the test. However, the moment you start thrashing the motor, you’ll see a huge drop in fuel efficiency. But, then, that’s always the case when you put small turbo petrol engines in heavy vehicles.</p>

<p>As a handler, the XC60’s body controls are taut and predictable. The steering offers decent feel and feedback, and it goes around corners nonchalantly. The body roll is prominent though, but then it’s not supposed to be driven like a go-kart. The ride quality is phenomenal, though. At low speeds, the ride is absorbent and impeccably quiet. The XC60 successfully isolates you from the broken surfaces of the world, as you’d expect from a ₹60+ lakh SUV. High-speed stability is good, but there’s a lot of vertical movement at triple-digit speeds on less-than-perfect roads. You’ll also notice excessive forward pitch while braking at high speeds. There's&nbsp;no adaptive dampers or air suspension on offer, which means that there’s not a lot in terms of adjustability.</p>

<p><strong>Verdict</strong></p>

<p>With the XC60, you get the feeling that it’s a luxury SUV aimed at discerning customers. It’s made with a single-minded focus on comfort, style, and luxury. Sure, the XC60 is not perfect in every way, but it’s the sort of vehicle that’s deeply desirable regardless of its flaws. And, honestly, when a car soothes your senses while driving and looks this good, anyone would be willing to shut their eyes to its minor flaws.</p>
