2019 Mercedes-AMG G63 unleashed with 577bhp

The new G63 will very likely be the most powerful variant of the second-gen G-Wagen, as the V12-powered G65 is believed to be never coming back.

Mercedes-AMG has digitally revealed what is the craziest variant of the new, completely overhauled G-Wagen.

Despite being a boxy, high-riding vehicle, the AMG G63 contains all the ingredients that should grant it sports car embarrassing performance. At its heart lies AMG’s familiar 4.0-litre, twin-turbo V8, which is tuned to pump out 577 horses - at par with the AMG GT R. Furthermore, the twist force, at 850Nm, is over 100Nm more than the latter. As a result, the 0-100km/h sprint is taken care of in 4.5 seconds.

These power and torque figures on the new model are roughly 40bhp and 90Nm up from the previous G63 (which is still sold in India). Gain in mechanical force combined with a loss of almost 175kg clearly indicate that the new G63 means business. Handling the power transmission duties is a 9-speed automatic, which feeds power to all the four wheels. Additionally, the 4Matic AWD system has been tweaked by AMG so that it can send as much as 60 per cent power to the rear tyres.

Visually, the G63 wears characteristic AMG-exclusive elements to distinguish it from the more mainstream Gs. The most obvious change up front is the new vertical-slot grille, which is being incorporated in all the new high performance AMGs since the GT R. Then, there are larger intakes, bigger 22-inch wheels, AMG badging, red calipers with perforated disc brakes, etc. Those cool side-exit exhaust pipes from the previous model have been retained.

The new Mercedes-AMG G63 will have its world premiere at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show - the sales release date is March 18 and the global market launch begins from June. The model will eventually make its way to India as well, although we do not know when.
