Bharat Mobility Expo 2025: At this year's Auto Expo, BYD unveiled a range of vehicles from its global lineup, highlighting the brand's innovative approach to electric mobility. Among the standout models was the Yangwang U8, BYD's flagship luxury SUV, which was showcased in India for the first time. In addition to the plug-in hybrid SUV, BYD's luxury Yangwang brand also encompasses the U9 supercar. This premium model combines advanced electric technology with a sleek, modern design. Featuring cutting-edge features, robust performance, and a focus on luxury, the Yangwang U8 has captured the attention of visitors who prefer an eco-friendly yet sophisticated driving experience.

BYD Yangwang U8: Mechanical Core

The BYD U8 is available in two variants: the Off-road Master Edition and the Premium Edition. This innovative offering is an Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV), featuring a 49.05kWh Blade battery with LFP chemistry and a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine that functions solely as a power generator, not driving the wheels. The U8 utilises Cell-to-Chassis (CTC) technology to integrate the battery into the chassis.

It is powered by four electric motors, each producing 295bhp, delivering a total output of 1,184bhp and 1,280Nm of torque. The U8 offers an electric-only range of 180 km and can extend to 1,000 km with the petrol engine. With a top speed of 200km/h, it accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in just 3.6 seconds. The BYD U8 impresses with its emergency flotation mode, which allows the SUV to float on water for up to 30 minutes, while also enabling it to move at speeds of up to 3km/h, helping drivers escape difficult water-based situations. 

BYD Yangwang U8: What's Inside?

Inside, the U8 exudes luxury, with soft leather materials covering the dashboard. The centerpiece is a large, vertically mounted infotainment screen, accompanied by only a few physical buttons for simplicity. The vehicle also features a comprehensive set of displays, including a prominent driver's screen, as well as entertainment screens for the co-driver and rear passengers. Enhancing the audio experience, the U8 is equipped with 22 speakers to provide an immersive surround sound system throughout the cabin.

BYD Yangwang U8: Exterior Highlights

The Yangwang U8 features a bold, traditional boxy SUV shape, with rugged design elements that emphasise its tough character. The front is dominated by a pixelated-pattern grille, with the same design carried through to the headlights and DRL housings, adding a modern touch. The side of the vehicle is highlighted by angular wheel arches and darkened wheels, while flush door handles maintain a clean, sleek look.

At the rear, a large spare wheel is mounted on the tailgate, reinforcing the SUV’s rugged appeal. The LED taillights also showcase the pixelated pattern, ensuring a cohesive design from front to back.

For now, BYD has no intentions of bringing its luxury sub-brand to India, with the U8 serving as one of the standout showcases at India's largest automotive event.
