The 2020 WardsAuto 10 Best Engines & Powertrains Award winners have been announced and BMW's B58 TwinPower Turbo 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder engine has emerged as one of the winners for the second consecutive time. The B58 series unit currently powers the 2020 BMW M340i sedan, Z4 M40i roadster, along with the X3 M40i & X4 M40i SAVs. Accepting the award on behalf of BMW, Ralph Mahler (Head of Product Planning & Strategy - BMW North America) said, 'The inline six-cylinder engine has been the heart and soul of the Ultimate Driving Machine for over eighty years...we are extremely grateful and thankful for this recognition by the WardsAutos jurors.'

As mentioned by Mahler, BMW’s history with the inline six-cylinder engine configuration began 87 years ago, with a 29bhp 1.2-litre unit that powered the 303 sedan. Currently, the in-line six-cylinder configuration (3.0-litre unit) powers nearly every BMW model line, with versions ranging from 330bhp to 496bhp.

In 2019, the WardsAuto jurors tested the B58 TwinPower Turbo 3.0-litre I-6 unit in the BMW X5, for which it won.
