The next-generation BMW iX3, first shown at the Munich Motor Show last September, is attracting significant attention at the CES 2026. One of the key reasons is the AI-powered BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, now enhanced with Amazon’s Alexa+, making the iX3 the first BMW to offer this technology. Since its debut in 2018, the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant has been central to the iDrive experience. The rollout of Amazon Alexa Custom Assistant in 2022 accelerated its capabilities (enabling faster responses and broader knowledge access), while the 2025 Operating System 9 expansion enriched it with real-time insights spanning sports, news, and broader general knowledge. The integration of Alexa+ makes the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant smarter and more natural to use, replacing fixed voice commands with conversational dialogue that understands intent and context. Here's everything you need to know.

Passengers will be able to interact with the vehicle intuitively, managing functions and retrieving external information using the new system (powered by a Large Language Model). Moreover, they can now ask multiple questions at once, including both vehicle features and general knowledge. Integration with Amazon accounts will enable passengers to enjoy music, get news updates, and explore a wide range of content effortlessly. BMW confirmed that the Alexa+-powered assistant will begin its global rollout in the second half of 2026, starting with the iX3 in Germany and the United States. By 2027, the technology is expected to be integrated into 40 different BMW models via Over-the-Air (OTA) updates for vehicles running Operating System 9 and X.

The iX3 is powered by BMW’s latest software platform, Operating System X, which promises greater performance and flexibility. At CES, the car showcased the system’s full entertainment capabilities. Drivers can stream content via Disney+ and the TiVo™-powered Video App when stationary, access over 85 apps, including YouTube Music, and make Zoom video calls that revert to audio on the move.
