JSW Motors appears to be getting serious about its entry into the Indian automotive market through a partnership with Chinese carmaker Chery. A camouflaged prototype of the Jaecoo J5 has now been spotted testing near Pune, offering the first sign that the SUV could be under evaluation for the Indian market. That usually means early development work is already underway. The Jaecoo J5 is expected to be part of a larger product push from JSW Motors that could also include models like the Jetour T2 and the iCar V23 as the company prepares to enter India’s growing SUV and EV space.

In terms of size, the Jaecoo J5 sits right in the mid-size SUV category. That places it squarely in the competitive C-segment. The design follows a clean and modern approach. Combustion variants get a vertical slat grille, while the electric version features a closed-off front fascia. The SUV also gets slim LED lighting, flush door handles and 19-inch alloy wheels, giving it a contemporary look.

The Jaecoo J5 focuses heavily on technology and comfort. The cabin features a large 14.8-inch vertical infotainment screen along with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. It also comes with ventilated front seats and a panoramic sunroof. A 540-degree camera system helps with visibility around the vehicle. Safety features include multiple airbags and Level 2 advanced driver assistance systems.
Globally, the electric version of the Jaecoo J5 is powered by a 60.9kWh battery pack paired with a front-mounted motor. This setup produces 209bhp and 288Nm of torque. The SUV can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in around 7.3 seconds. It also supports DC fast charging up to 130kW, allowing the battery to charge from 30 to 80 per cent in about 28 minutes. The claimed range stands at roughly 461km under the NEDC cycle.
For India, JSW Motors is expected to focus on the electric powertrain as it looks to compete with models such as the Hyundai Creta Electric and the Mahindra BE 6. Production is planned at the upcoming facility in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra. The first few units are expected to arrive as completely knocked down kits before localisation increases. If everything goes as planned, the Jaecoo J5 could reach showrooms around 2027, possibly after the launch of the Jetour T2.
