The Land Rover Freelander is back, but this time it takes a different route. Jaguar Land Rover has partnered with Chery to bring the badge back through a joint venture. The Concept 97 leads this comeback and previews a new range of electric SUVs. The earlier Freelander was known for its off-road ability, but this new version shifts focus to electric mobility and a wider global market. Production will take place at the joint venture facility in Changshu, China. For now, these new Freelander models are mainly aimed at the Chinese market.
The Concept 97 keeps a boxy SUV stance but moves away from traditional Land Rover styling. At the front, it features a closed-off grille and a full-width LED light bar that connects the headlamps. The lighting setup also includes a triangular logo detail, giving it a distinct identity.

From the side, the SUV looks clean with flush door handles and large alloy wheels that help improve airflow. The diagonal C-pillar is a clear reference to the original 1997 Freelander. At the rear, the design stays simple with a slim light strip and a roof-mounted spoiler.
Inside, the Concept 97 focuses on space and tech. It gets a six-seat layout in a 2+2+2 configuration, which should work well for family use. The cabin layout looks clean and modern, with a strong focus on digital integration.

A full-width display stretches across the dashboard. The SUV also uses sustainable materials inside the cabin. Driver assistance systems are handled by Huawei, and a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor supports better detection and safety functions.
The Concept 97 is based on Chery E0X platform, which is built for electric vehicles. This platform supports multiple options, including pure electric, plug-in hybrid, and range-extender setups. The range-extender version uses a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine.

In terms of size, this is a large SUV, measuring over 5.1 metres in length with a wheelbase of more than 3 metres. It also runs on an 800-volt system, allowing fast charging speeds of up to 360kW.

There are also plans to export these SUVs to markets like the Middle East. The production process will combine Chery’s supply network with Jaguar Land Rover’s quality standards.
