A few hours ago, Volkswagen unveiled its Sport Coupe Concept GTE at the Geneva Motor Show which is a plug-in hybrid and has a power delivery of 375bhp.

It seems that the folks at Volkswagen have started taking the design aspect of their cars a little too seriously. Confirming the same belief, Volkswagen unveiled its Sport Coupe Concept GTE at the 85th Geneva Motor Show.

The ‘avant-garde’ model uses a V6 TSI engine and two electric motors to generate a maximum power of 375bhp and help the car reach a maximum speed of 250km/h. The 3.0-litre, turbocharged, six-cylinder engine delivers 295bhp of power. The electric motor at the front delivers 54bhp and the motor at the rear produces 114bhp. The car can be made to deliver the power to all the four-wheels. In the all-electric mode, the car can be driven around over 50kms with ease. Both these powerplants working together will help the car have a fuel efficiency of 50km/l.

Commenting on the car at the time of its unveiling in Geneva, Walter de Silva, Head of Design of Volkswagen AG said, “Evolution and revolution come together in the Sport Coupé Concept GTE. This concept is based on Volkswagen design DNA, which has been visibly sharpened even more. It shows how fascinating the highest-volume brand of our Group is shaping the immediate future.”

Adding more to what Mr. Silva said, Dr. Heinz-Jakob Neuber, Volkswagen Brand Board Member for Development said, “This concept car is a breathtakingly dynamic coupé unlike any other to appear in this class. In the design of the Sport Coupé Concept GTE – that is, in the style of an exclusive sports car that is enriched by the added functionality of a large boot lid and the interior space of a four-seater – we see an impressive alternative to the classic saloons of the B and C segments.”

Based on the highly talked about MQB platform, the car will have 21-inch wheels, sliding sunroof, enough headroom both in front and rear, and a 480 litre of boot space. The Sport Coupe Concept GTE is a four-door coupe with design of a sports car. The LED headlamps that are deeply integrated into the front end give the front of the car a very refreshed look. The bonnet of the car looks exceptionally long thanks to its A-pillar that has been set far back. The C-pillar is low set to make the design of the car flow effortlessly. Inside of the car you will find a 12.3-inch Active Info Display with 3D visual effect. It can be used to operate functions including the media library, telephone and navigation.

At the Geneva Motor Show, Volkswagen also said that the Passat GTE, where GTE denotes Volkswagen cars with a plug-in hybrid drive, will be hitting the international markets by the end of this year.
