GM Defense Next Gen Tactical Vehicle Front and Side View

GM Defense, a division of General Motors (GM), has unveiled its new tactical vehicle concept, called the 'Next Gen' at the 2024 edition of AUSA (Association of the U.S. Army). The state-of-the-art vehicle supports enhanced mobility and versatility for military operations. It allows for discreet surveillance and silent driving, along with stealthy entry and exit in high-threat areas. Additionally, the vehicle offers exportable power for mission systems and energy-intensive equipment. It is equipped with roll-over protection, electronic stability control, four- and five-point seat belt harnesses, anti-lock braking, and 360-degree camera capabilities. Other notable highlights include autonomy-ready with manned and unmanned options, and add-on armor capable.

The 'Next Gen' prototype, which is based on the Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD ZR2 truck, has a 2.8-litre Duramax Turbo diesel engine paired with a 12-module battery system. The hybrid technology minimizes logistical constraints by lowering fuel consumption and enabling the vehicle to utilize the current JP8 fuel infrastructure. Moreover, the Ultium battery and Duramax engine function together to facilitate Silent Drive and Watch modes, decreasing heat and sound traces while making the vehicle more difficult to trace. These capabilities enhance mission range and endurance by more than 300 kilometres, and support several military sensors and equipment.

The rugged vehicle is available in two-, four-, and six-seat configurations, allowing adaptability for various types of missions, including casualty evacuation, network extension, command and control, and anti-armor operations.

Commenting on the prototype, Steve duMont, president of GM Defense, said 'Our Next Gen vehicle is a game-changing mobility solution that delivers tactically significant capabilities by integrating GM’s proven commercial technologies. This rugged and highly capable diesel-powered vehicle offers tactical advantages, such as Silent Operations, exportable power, and increased range with extended mission duration.'

He also added 'Our warfighters deserve the latest technology that industry can offer to gain and maintain competitive advantage over our adversaries. Our Next Gen mobility solution can be customized and fielded now.'

John ‘JD’ Johnson, vice president of GM Defense’s Government Solutions and Strategy Division said 'Next Gen’s ‘wow’ factor is right behind the wheel. Customers need to drive this highly capable vehicle to see, feel, and hear the benefits. Next Gen fundamentally changes the discussion around modern mobility through the tactical benefits delivered by its propulsion system, including its ability to address the power gap in the formation. This highly capable tactical vehicle leverages billions of dollars of investments GM has made in R&D and innovation to enhance warfighter capability.'
