Honda has begun pan-India road testing of its first electric car, the 0 Alpha. The mid-size electric SUV, based on the concept of the same name that debuted at the Japan Mobility Show last year, is expected to launch in India in 2027. It will be manufactured in India, likely at the brand’s Tapukara plant in Rajasthan, backed by an investment of reportedly Rs 1,200 crore. Moreover, the SUV will be exported to other markets from India, positioning the country as an export hub for Honda’s first EV.
During the testing phase, the SUV will undergo extensive trials across a variety of Indian road conditions, ranging from highways to congested city roads and challenging terrains. It will be closely monitored for durability, handling, ride comfort, efficiency, and overall reliability. Honda will also test its upcoming electric car in harsh weather conditions, including intense summer heat and heavy monsoon. Moreover, the SUV’s charging performance will be analysed across different charging setups.

The production-spec Honda 0 Alpha is expected to retain the majority of the elements seen on the concept. These include a clean, screen-like panel (housing slim lighting elements, the illuminated Honda logo, and the charging port), a lower bumper flowing into the side body cladding, sculpted wheel arches, aero-style alloy wheels, and a U-shaped rear LED light strip that combines several lights (tail, turn, and reverse lamps). Compared to the larger 0 SUV, the Alpha SUV has compact proportions.

The interior of the 0 Alpha has not yet been revealed, but Honda highlighted that the concept will follow its ‘Thin’ design philosophy, which focuses on creating a sleek, low-profile exterior while maintaining adequate ground clearance and a spacious cabin layout. Powertrain-wise, the Honda electric SUV is expected to be offered with two battery options.
Although it is too early to comment on price, Honda's first EV could ask somewhere between Rs 17 and Rs 30 lakh (ex-showroom) upon its launch in India. It will lock horns with the Maruti Suzuki e Vitara, Hyundai Creta Electric, and Mahindra BE 6.
