Lamborghini has reportedly abandoned plans to launch its first all-electric vehicle. If the speculation turns out to be accurate, the Italian marque would join fellow luxury automakers such as Mercedes-Benz and Porsche in recalibrating their electric strategies, scaling back battery-powered ambitions amid cooling demand in the segment. For the unversed, Lamborghini revealed the Lanzador, a four-seat electric crossover SUV concept, at Monterey Car Week in 2023. The production version was scheduled to arrive in 2029. However, a report from The Sunday Times suggests those launch plans may now be uncertain.
In an interview with the publication, Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann said that the “acceptance curve” for electric cars among Lamborghini buyers is “flattening” and “close to zero.” He added that the buyers are drawn to the “emotional experience” of their vehicles, especially the unmistakable roar and tactile feedback of an internal combustion engine, and EVs of today cannot replicate that same sensation. Hence, launching a full-electric Lamborghini before the market and its customers are ready could be financially risky, which Winkelmann deemed as “an expensive hobby.”

Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann has said that the Lanzador EV will be replaced by a plug-in hybrid, and the entire range will be PHEV by 2030.
While the Italian marque is not completely ruling out electric vehicles, it believes that heavily investing in fully electric models isn’t financially viable at this stage. By focusing on plug-in hybrid technology instead, Lamborghini can comply with emissions regulations while staying aligned with the current preferences of its customers.
This move makes Lamborghini the second Volkswagen Group brand to scale back EV plans, although Audi continues to bet big on EVs.
