Mahindra Thar Front View

On August 15 in South Africa, the eagerly anticipated Mahindra Thar 5-door is scheduled to mark its worldwide premiere. The XUV700 debuted on August 15, 2021, the Mahindra Thar 3-door on the same day in 2020, and last Independence Day, the Mahindra EV concept range made its UK premiere. Mahindra has had a presence in South Africa since 1996, and the country is a significant market for the auto major. The Indian carmaker also had a respectable expansion across the nation where it sells the Scorpio, the XUV300, and the XUV700. With the Thar, Mahindra is now considering adding more SUVs to that market. The wait is now over for many driving enthusiasts, and if you are also planning to buy the new Thar 5-door, here are some aspects to look forward to from the upcoming model.

Mahindra Thar 5-door: Engine and Gearbox

The more powerful 2.2-litre diesel and 2.0-litre turbo petrol units will drive the Thar 5-door variant. Mahindra could decide against using the 1.5-litre engine because there is no tax benefit. The 5-door Thar will also be heavier. The 2.0-litre gasoline engine generates 150bhp of maximum power, while the 2.2-litre diesel engine produces a maximum power output of 130bhp. Besides, Mahindra will continue to offer the same manual and torque converter automatic transmission choices. As the bigger SUV will benefit from its go-anywhere skills with the additional benefit of more space, the upcoming 5-door Thar will maintain the 4WD capabilities much like the three-door version of the off-roader.

Mahindra Thar 5-door: Dimensions

Mahindra Thar Side Profile

Based on a ladder frame chassis, the Thar is 3,985mm long, 1,820mm wide, and 1,855mm tall. The ground clearance is 226mm, and the wheelbase is 2,450mm long. The Thar has an approach angle of 41.2 degrees, a departure angle of 36 degrees, and a ramp-over angle of 26.2 degrees, respectively. Depending on the model, the SUV will come with either 16-inch or 18-inch wheels.

Mahindra Thar 5-door: Design

Despite the fact that the test mules for the 5-door Thar spotted so far are similar to the 3-door version, we do see small cosmetic changes. The basic structure is undoubtedly the same, but there are a few minor modifications to differentiate the two. The front profile gets a new grille design. Mahindra added square headlights to give it a more retro appearance even though the test vehicles' headlights are round and the final model has a similar shape. Furthermore, the side profile is longer due to the larger wheelbase needed to fit the extra doors.

Mahindra Thar Dashboard

The dashboard for the forthcoming Thar resembles the 3-door model considerably. However, there are a few small adjustments to the features and trim colour choices. A broad centre armrest for the front passengers was also revealed by one of the sighted test mules. The second row now has an appropriate bench with seating for three individuals. There is plenty of headroom and legroom in the second row as well. Aside from that, there is extra boot space. Other features of the Thar 5-door include cruise control, a rear parking camera, an 8-inch touchscreen system, up to six airbags, and automatic air conditioning.

The Thar 5-door will be globally unveiled on August 15 in South Africa, as per a media report. According to Rajesh Jejurikar, Executive Director & CEO (Auto and Farm Sector), Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd., the model will afterward make its way to the Indian shores next year. Price-wise, one would expect it to start at about Rs 15 lakh (ex-showroom).
