According to a survey done by JD Power, Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 tops the entry level car segment and the Hyundai i10 tops the compact car segment.

JD Power 2014 India Initial Quality Study rankings have some good news for Maruti Suzuki; its Alto 800 has been ranked highest and given the highest honour in the entry compact segment. The car was found to have 97 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100). The company’s Swift ranked highest in the premium compact segment with 78 PP100.

Hyundai’s i10 bagged the top spot in the compact segment with a score of 84 PP100, whereas its Xcent topped the entry midsize segment with 86 PP100. Some of the other winners from various categories include names like the Honda Brio in the upper compact segment, the Ford Ecosport in SUV segment, the Skoda Rapid in the midsize segment and the Toyota Innova in the MUV/ MPV segment.

The research included 73 models from 17 different manufacturers and was carried out between March and September this year. A total of 8,429 vehicle owners from 30 different cities gave their feedbacks on various aspects of a car. All the issues were then summarised to fit the PP100 parameter. A lesser number denotes the finesses of a car over others.

The report also goes on to say that the quality of diesel vehicles has improved astonishingly in the recent years. The average score for diesel cars dropped to 96 PP100 this year against 148 PP100 reported in 2010.

“Overall, the industry has made significant strides on improving the quality of diesel vehicles, especially on core vehicle systems,” Mohit Arora, Executive Director, JD Power Asia Pacific said.

The study included and covered various categories like engine and transmission, vehicle exterior, driving experience, HVAC, features, controls and displays, vehicle interior, seats, audio, entertainment and navigation.
