McLaren P1 Successor: Key Details

McLaren has released a teaser video highlighting "What Makes a '1' Car?", and positioning it as the pinnacle of supercar innovation and the start of a new era in high-performance vehicles. This follows in the footsteps of the McLaren F1 from the 1990s and the P1, both of which set new standards in the supercar segment. The date October 6 appears at the end of the teaser film, implying that this is when the P1 successor would be unveiled. The upcoming vehicle, code-named P18, will be the next model in McLaren's Ultimate Series; the Speedtail Grand Tourer was the previous model.

The P18 will likely incorporate a plug-in hybrid powertrain that utilises a newly engineered twin-turbocharged V8 engine as its gasoline component. While this setup mirrors that of the P1, introduced over a decade ago, the new model is expected to feature a significantly lighter hybrid system. Additionally, it is projected to deliver peak output exceeding the 1,040.5bhp of the Speedtail, which also employs a V8 plug-in hybrid engine. This advancement should lead to a notable increase in performance compared to the P1, which produced 891bhp.

The design elements of the upcoming hypercar are also expected to come in the form of a newly designed carbon-fibre chassis, gullwing doors in place of McLaren’s usual butterfly doors, and styling inspired by Formula 1. Production is anticipated to be restricted to fewer than 400 units.
