The Mercedes-AMG GT XX Concept made a bold statement at the Nardo high-speed test track in Italy by covering an impressive 5,479km in a single 24-hour period. This was a new world record for the maximum distance travelled by an EV in one day. Mercedes also set a global EV record by covering the Earth’s equatorial distance of 40,075 km in under eight days. Built on the AMG.EA architecture, the GT XX has three axial-flux electric motors producing around 1,323bhp.
On this car, cooling for the battery pack is done by liquid through cylindrical NCMA batteries that allow for peak charging of 850kW, equating to about 402km of range added in five minutes. This duo technology managed superb performance and charging speed, a must for testing on endurance.

The team at record attempts consisted of 17 professional drivers, including Mercedes-AMG Formula 1 racer George Russell. The drivers decided to rotate every two hours to keep the pace steady, whereas engineers calculated that 300km/h was the best speed at which to optimise between speed and duration of stops to charge. The GT XX’s fast charging and high-speed endurance allowed it to continuously shatter 25 EV distance records during the nearly eight-day campaign.

Although the GT XX is still a concept, its advanced drivetrain and charging technology are intended to appear soon in production models, such as the upcoming AMG C590. While current public charging infrastructure does not yet match the test’s power levels, the record run sets a high standard for future electric vehicle performance and reliability.

Mercedes’ record-breaking performance not only pushes EV endurance limits but also signals the company’s readiness to compete against established rivals in the electric performance segment.
