Mercedes Benz GLC US

Mercedes-Benz has issued a voluntary recall of over 15,000 vehicles in the US due to misaligned headlamps that can increase the risk of accidents and injuries. The issue has reportedly affected 15,502 SUVs, including the Mercedes-Benz GLC 300, the 350e, as well as the AMG GLC 43. The models in question were manufactured between 2019 and 2022, and all were built on the same platform.

Mercedes-Benz GLC Recall: Internal Investigation

The recall comes after an internal investigation prompted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), a US-based non-profit organisation – which rates vehicles according to their headlamp performance. In 2021, IIHS conducted a review of select GLC models and provided a rating for them, which did not go down well with the luxury carmaker. This even caused Mercedes-Benz to suspect possible misalignment issues with the headlamps.

Subsequently, the carmaker launched an investigation and found that although the headlights were misaligned according to its standards, they were technically compliant with FMVSS (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards) 108. However, by January 2024, the tolerance requirements of FMVSS 108 were found to be slightly exceeding in some instances. Moreover, the company also identified two production lines where issues with headlight alignment might have arisen. A field analysis revealed only a single case in October 2021.

Mercedes-Benz GLC Recall: Remedy

However, in response, the carmaker has announced the recall of the said vehicles (2019-22). As of now, the GLC does not have a system installed that warns the drivers of misaligned headlights. Mercedes-Benz plans to notify customers on or before March 1, 2024. The owners of the GLC can get in touch with the company at their authorised service outlets in the US to see if their vehicles are included in a safety recall.

Mercedes-Benz GLC in India

Mercedes-Benz launched the new-generation GLC in India in August 2023, with prices starting at Rs 73.50 to Rs 74.50 lakh (ex-showroom). Mechanically, it comes with two powertrain options (GLC 300 and GLC 220d) with a 4Matic system as standard. The GLC 300 is powered by a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, while the 220d gets a 2.0-litre diesel engine. Both engines come mated to a mild-hybrid setup producing an additional 23bhp and 220Nm. The carmaker claims the new GLC can accelerate from 0 to 100kmph in 6.2 seconds.
