Mercedes-Benz sold 3,093 luxury cars in India during the second quarter of 2015, recording a 43% rise over the corresponding quarter of last year.
The half-yearly sales growth was marginally lower at 41%, but stellar nonetheless. The German car maker has sold 6,659 units since the advent of the year, as compared 4,717 units during the same time last year.
Mercedes attributes its sales growth to its comprehensive range of vehicles, particularly the C-Class and E-Class which continue to drive strong volumes. Among the SUVs, the sales of the soon-to-be-replaced M-Class grew significantly, with the GL-Class not far behind in second.
Commenting on the sales figures, Eberhard Kern, managing director and CEO, Mercedes-Benz India, said “In the first six months of 2015, we sold almost as many cars as in the entire year of 2012 (7,138 units). We created a strong growth momentum in Q1, taking a clear sales lead, and are glad to sustain this stellar growth story in Q2 as well. We are on track with our long term objective of achieving a sustained profitable growth for our business in India.”
“This performance firmly underlines the acceptance of our customer-focused approach. With some of the most awaited products in the pipeline for the remaining two quarters, including the much-awaited AMG GT, Mercedes-Benz is all set for another year of strong growth.”
Mercedes recently expanded its Pune manufacturing facility, taking the total annual output to 20,000 units. A string of launches are scheduled for rest of the year to sustain growth and overtake Audi as India’s largest selling luxury car brand.
