The MG M9 is the most recent addition to India’s niche yet discerning market for luxury MPVs. It’s the first electric model in the segment that’s also comparatively affordable. While the MPV doesn’t have a direct EV rival, we recently compared it with its closest ICE alternative, the Kia Carnival. Now, we’re putting it up against the Toyota Vellfire, a long-standing, premium option in the segment. Here's a detailed comparison to see how MG's electric contender fares against its more established and expensive rival.

With an introductory ex-showroom price of Rs 69.90 lakh, the MG M9 is a more affordable MPV compared to the Toyota Vellfire, which is priced between Rs 1.22 crore and Rs 1.32 crore. While the Vellfire is available in multiple trim levels, the M9 comes in a single, fully loaded variant. This approach makes the MG M9 an attractive choice for buyers looking for a feature-rich, electric luxury MPV without stepping into the crore-plus price bracket. All prices are ex-showroom.

The MG M9 reflects its EV identity with a straightforward appearance, featuring smooth contours, a seamless LED light bar, and a signature closed-off grille. Its notable elements like dark air dams, subtle chrome accents, and electrically sliding doors complete the contemporary and functional look.

The Toyota Vellfire, on the other hand, expresses its premium vibe through a bold and imposing design. The massive six-slat grille, generous chrome applications, and sharp LED lights give the Toyota MPV an aggressive and upscale front-end.

Moreover, the refined glasshouse with blacked-out pillars and chrome surrounds, along with its prominent V-shaped tail lights and signature badges, underscores its more traditional, high-end luxury appeal.
As you can see in the table above, the M9 is the larger vehicle. It is 195mm longer, 150mm wider, and has a 200mm longer wheelbase than the Toyota Vellfire. However, the Vellfire is 150mm taller than its MG rival.
| Dimensions | MG M9 | Toyota Vellfire | Difference |
| Length | 5,200mm | 5,005mm | +195mm |
| Width | 2,000mm | 1,850mm | +150mm |
| Height | 1,800mm | 1,950mm | -150mm |

| Frunk | 55 litres | Not available |
In terms of practicality, the M9 surpasses its competitor with 945 litres of boot and an extra 55 litres of frunk. It offers 6 or 7 seat options, while the Vellfire is a 7-seater only.

The MG M9’s interior gives a luxurious experience with its dual-tone tan and black theme, leatherette upholstery, and extensive soft-touch surfaces. It features a modern dashboard with a 12.3-inch floating infotainment screen, and a 7-inch digital driver display, as well as second-row Ottoman seats, which are wide, 16-way power adjustable, and offer ventilation, massage, and full recline functions. The M9 also includes comforts like dual sunroofs, ambient lighting, three-zone climate control, and powered front seats with massage.
In comparison, the Toyota Vellfire offers more traditional opulence with a larger 14-inch touchscreen, a premium 15-speaker JBL sound system, and executive-class second-row captain seats. These also come with ventilation and massage, along with retractable tables and an optional Executive Lounge package. A standout in the Vellfire is its detachable rear control panel, which allows second-row passengers to manage climate, media, and shades. It also offers multiple interior themes to suit buyer preferences, along with over 60 connected features.

In terms of safety, both MPVs come well-equipped with 360-degree cameras, multiple airbags (7 in the M9 and 6 in the Vellfire), and ADAS suites. Overall, the MG M9 delivers an impressive feature list at a significantly lower price, while the Vellfire backs its premium tag with added finesse and brand-backed luxury.
The MG M9 and Toyota Vellfire have completely different sources of power. The MG M9 is electric in nature, backed by a 90kWh battery and a single electric motor. In contrast, the Toyota Vellfire relies on a 2.5-litre petrol-hybrid engine. In terms of performance, the MG M9 produces 52bhp more power and 110Nm of higher torque compared to the Vellfire.
