Porsche has done it again and for the fourth time it is a flat six engine that has won them honours. It was last in 2009 that Porsche won the ‘Best Engine of the Year’ award for the 3.8-litre flat six which did duty on the 911 Carerra S. And now, this year, it is their 2.7-litre flat six that’s won the ‘Best Engine of the Year’ award.

The Engine Technology International Magazine, has been giving this award for excellent engines for 15 years now and this year it handed over the honours to Porsche for the beautiful 2.7-litre engine that does duty on the Boxster and the Cayman.

The 2.7-litre flat six sport engine was derived from the 3.4-litre engine, based on the downsizing principle. Together with the PDK transmission, in the Cayman, it offers 275 bhp.

But it was not only power that impressed the judges. Power, along with driveability and fuel economy is the reason why Porsche clinched this title. The 2.7-litre engine from the Cayman boasts of a fuel consumption of 7.7 –litres per 100 km.

The jury didn’t stop there, they also praised the flexibility and responsiveness, performance and smooth running of the smallest-displacement flat engine from Porsche.

To put it in the words of Dean Slavinch of Engine Technology International Magazine, “A brilliant engine for a brilliant car. This centrepiece of Porsche technology combines performance and a sporty pedigree with impressive fuel efficiency.”
