Tata Curvv EV

After a long wait, Tata Motors has launched the Curvv EV in India for an introductory price of Rs 17.49 lakh (ex-showroom). The electrified SUV Coupe is a close competitor to the MG ZS EV, which starts at Rs 18.98 lakh (ex-showroom). The former has two battery options, while the latter is available in a single battery pack. We compare Tata's first mass-market SUV Coupe with the MG car to see which is more suitable for prospective EV buyers in India.

Tata Curvv EV vs MG ZS EV: Battery, Charging

The Curvv EV features an Acti.ev platform and two battery options: 45kWh and 55kWh. It is driven by a liquid-cooled Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMS), which generates 165bhp and 148bhp in the 55kWh and 45kWh versions, respectively. The torque (215Nm) is identical in both units. The smaller battery promises a range of 502 kilometres, whereas the larger battery claims a range of 585 kilometres. However, in real-world settings, the expected range of these units is 350 and 425 kilometres, respectively. The EV has a maximum speed of 160km/h. With a 45kWh battery, the Curvv EV can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in roughly 9 seconds. On the other hand, the 55kWh version completes the same distance in 8.6 seconds.

The electric SUV Coupe supports 1.2C fast charging rates, enabling you to charge the battery from 10% to 80% in 40 minutes using a DC charger of 70kW or higher. According to the company, a range of up to 150 kilometres can be achieved with just 15 minutes of charging.

Unlike Tata's car, the MG ZS EV uses a single 50.3kWh lithium-ion battery and an electric motor to provide more power and torque at 174bhp and 280Nm. The SUV's range is higher (461 kilometres) than the Curvv 45kWh version but slower than the top-spec 55kWh option. The MG electric SUV can be fully charged from 0% to 100% in about 9 hours using a 7.4 kW AC charger. However, it can be charged up to 80% in only 60 minutes with a 50 kW DC fast charger.
