Tata Nexon Spied Testing Its Upcoming SUV

Tata’s Nexon has been spied testing once again. Here are details about what you can expect from this upcoming compact SUV.

We have come across Tata testing the Nexon in Maharashtra recently and thought we would share some details about the upcoming compact SUV with you. With the Nexon, Tata is aiming squarely for the compact SUV segment to take on the likes of the Ford EcoSport, Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Mahindra TUV300, etc. The Nexon is based on the X1 platform which also underpins the likes of the Zest compact sedan and Bolt hatchback. This inherently means that the Nexon too should offer good in-cabin space.

Tata is getting fairly aspirational with its newer products. The upcoming Hexa actually feels fairly premium inside and the Tata Tiago feels like it is in a segment above its rivals in terms of features and interior build quality. Like the aforementioned new Tatas the Nexon too should come with good quality interiors. Although, a lot of it looks like the Tiago so Tata will have to up the plastic and seat fabric materials to make the car feel more premium than its rivals. For example, while the layout of the dashboard is all-new the instrument binnacle is lifted from the Tata Tiago. As a result, the whole cluster looks a tad tiny for a vehicle the size of the Nexon.

From the outside, the Nexon looks fairly contemporary with a coupe like roof line. The front makes quite a statement with its wide haunches, massive front bumper and big grille. The side profile looks very high set with what appears to be very good ground clearance. The rear of the car looks a little narrow partly because of its height and partly because of that black faux air diffuser.

Under the hood, the Nexon will be offered with a brand new 1.5 litre turbo diesel engine, which is essentially a scaled up version of the Tiago’s 1.05 litre diesel engine.  This 1.5 will have four cylinders and will develop around 108bhp of max power. The petrol motor will be a turbocharged version of the company’s 1.2 litre Revotron engine. This engine too will be rated around the 110bhp mark. Tata is said to also be working on a new six-speed manual gearbox to go with these engines while an AMT automatic gearbox will also be on offer.
