Tata Motors launched the facelifted version of the best-selling SUV, the Nexon, last week at an introductory price of Rs 8.10 lakh(ex-showroom) in India. The Nexon facelift is part of the fiercely competitive compact-SUV segment and goes up against the likes of the Kia Sonet, the Mahindra XUV300, the Hyundai Venue, and the Maruti Suzuki Brezza. In this article, we compare the Nexon with one of its primary rivals, the Brezza, to see how it stacks up in terms of powertrains, specifications, size, as well as prices.
Tata Nexon vs. Maruti Suzuki Brezza: Engine and Output
The recently launched Tata Nexon facelift comes with two engine options – a 1.5-litre diesel engine churning out 113bhp and 260Nm of peak torque and a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol mill, which generates 118bhp and 170Nm. On offer are 4 transmission options with the turbo-petrol unit – a 5-speed manual, 6-speed manual, 6-speed AMT, and a 7-speed DCT, while the diesel version can be had with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed AMT.
Unlike the Nexon, the Maruti Suzuki Brezza gets a single powertrain setup – a 1.5-litre four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine with 102bhp and 137Nm, but with the K15C's dual-jet technology (two injectors per cylinder). The petrol version also comes with a 6-speed automatic gearbox (replacing the previous 4-speed unit in the automatic form); however, the CNG variant only gets a 5-speed manual transmission. The mild hybrid technology is now standard on all manual and automatic variants.
Tata Nexon vs. Maruti Suzuki Brezza: Variant-wise Pricing
The updated Tata Nexon comes in 11 variants: Creative, Creative+, Creative+ S, Fearless, Fearless S, Fearless+ S, Pure, Pure S, Smart, Smart+, and Smart+ S. The Maruti Suzuki Brezza SUV, on the other hand, is available across just 4 variants at a starting price of Rs 8.29 lakh – LXI, VXI, ZXI, and ZXI+. Priced at Rs 8.10 lakh, the base-spec Tata Nexon Smart model can be had only with the 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine and 5-speed manual transmission. With a price tag of Rs 8.29 lakh, the Maruti Suzuki Brezza LXI variant with the 5-speed manual gearbox is about Rs 19,000 more expensive than the Nexon SUV's Smart variant.
Meanwhile, the Tata Nexon Pure can be had with 6-speed manual-only turbo-petrol and diesel engines, with prices starting at Rs 9.70 lakh. The Maruti Suzuki Brezza VXI trim level gets a choice of both manual as well as automatic units, with prices starting at Rs 9.64 lakh and going up to Rs 11.14 lakh for the automatic variant. As for the Nexon Creative trim, both petrol and diesel engines come mated to manual and automatic transmissions. Prices of the Creative start at Rs 11 lakh for the manual and range up to Rs 14.30 lakh for the Creative+S (AMT). The Maruti Suzuki Brezza ZXI is priced at Rs 11.04 lakh for the manual variant and Rs 12.54 lakh for the automatic variant.
The Tata Nexon's Fearless is the highest-end trim level of the SUV that does not come with a 6-speed AMT with the turbo-petrol unit. The Fearless DT (manual) stands at Rs 12.50 lakh, while the top-spec diesel AMT costs Rs 15.50 lakh. The manual version of the Maruti Suzuki Brezza ZXI+ trim is available for a price of Rs 12.48 lakh (ex-showroom), making it the highest-spec trim level currently offered. The automatic model based on the same trim level, meanwhile, is priced at Rs 13.98 lakh (ex-showroom). Note that all prices are ex-showroom.
