Meet the Tesla Model S P100D Ludicrous – the world’s fastest accelerating car that is currently on sale. Yes, you heard that right! This is made possible by plonking a more powerful battery pack in the Model S sedan that helps it to do 0-100km/h in 2.5 seconds flat! You may argue that the Ferrari LaFerrari and Porsche 918 Spyder are faster, but both are out of production now. And don't forget the fact that both the Ferrari and the Porsche are classified as hypercars as opposed to the Model S, which is a family sedan!
Like its name suggests, the Model S P100D gets a 100kWh battery – 10kWh more than the erstwhile top-end performance-oriented P90D model. Club that with Tesla’s Ludicrous mode, and it help propel the new version to 100km/h in a time that makes it the third fastest accelerating car ever! Thanks to the bigger battery, the range has also gone up to 507 kilometers on EPA cycle and 613km on the EU cycle. The 100kWh will also be made available with the company’s Model X crossover. And while it may not be as quick off the line as Model S, it will now do 0-100km/h in 2.9 seconds.
Tesla has also said that customers who have booked the P90D with Ludicrous mode can upgrade to the more powerful 100kWh version for $10,000. For existing customers, the battery pack can also be replaced, although it will cost double the money ($20,000). This, as per Tesla, is because the 90kWh battery will have to be recycled once replaced by the bigger battery.
In case you’re wondering as to why Tesla is launching powerful and more expensive cars, here’s what the company’s official statement say- “While the P100D Ludicrous is obviously an expensive vehicle, we want to emphasize that every sale helps pay for the smaller and much more affordable Tesla Model 3 that is in development. Without customers willing to buy the expensive Model S and X, we would be unable to fund the smaller, more affordable Model 3 development.”
