Toyota will launch the Urban Cruiser EV in India on 20 January 2026, marking the brand’s entry into the mass-market electric SUV space. This will be Toyota’s first fully electric SUV aimed at regular buyers in the country. The Urban Cruiser EV is based on the upcoming Maruti Suzuki e Vitara, but Toyota has added its own design changes and feature layout. With electric vehicles gaining attention across segments, this launch becomes important for Toyota’s India plans.
The model targets buyers looking to shift from petrol and diesel SUVs to electric options without changing driving habits. Positioned in the mid-size category, the Urban Cruiser EV will focus on daily usability, range confidence and familiar SUV proportions, making it a key product in Toyota’s upcoming electric portfolio.

The SUV bears a shape similar to the e Vitara but features Toyota-specific updates at the front and rear. LED lighting elements and a revised bumper design help give it a separate identity. The overall stance remains upright, keeping it practical for Indian road conditions and city use.

Inside the cabin, Toyota is likely to offer a dual-screen setup. This may include a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 10.1-inch digital instrument cluster. Connectivity options could include wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Expected comfort features include ventilated front seats, a powered driver seat, wireless phone charging and a fixed panoramic glass roof.
On the safety front, the Urban Cruiser EV is expected to offer Level 2 ADAS along with multiple airbags. Other features may include a 360-degree camera, front and rear parking sensors, electronic stability control, ABS with EBD and tyre pressure monitoring.
Under the body, the Urban Cruiser EV is expected to use the Heartect-e platform. Toyota may offer two battery options, a 49kWh pack and a 61kWh pack. Both versions will use a front-mounted electric motor. As per early expectations, the driving range could go beyond 500km on a single charge under ARAI testing. This should place the SUV among the stronger range performers in its segment.

The Toyota Urban Cruiser EV will compete with models such as the Hyundai Creta Electric, Mahindra BE 6, MG ZS EV, Maruti Suzuki e Vitara and Tata Curvv EV. Toyota will announce prices at the official launch, with estimates placing the ex-showroom figure between Rs 19 lakh and Rs 25 lakh. Bookings and deliveries should begin soon after the launch.
