Small cars or hatchbacks are garnering good sales over the past few years. Affordability and convenience could be two main reasons for their demand in India. Hatchbacks are ideal for city driving, as they offer better maneuverability and parking options, making them a popular choice for young people and families. With more Indian cities becoming congested, the demand for hatchbacks has only increased. Additionally, the increased availability of advanced safety features, such as airbags, ABS, and electronic stability control, have made hatchbacks a more attractive choice. Some of the popular hatchbacks in India include the Maruti Suzuki Swift, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, the Hyundai i20, the Tata Tiago, and more. Several carmakers considering the steadily growing market of these cars in India are planning to bring some new models. Here's a short list containing some of the anticipated hatchbacks, which will start rolling on our Indian roads soon.

MG Comet

MG Motor India will launch the compact Comet EV by the middle of 2023. The name of the EV is inspired by a British aircraft that competed in the 1934 England-Australia MacRobertson Air Race. According to industry speculations, the 2-door electric vehicle could be the Wuling Air EV, sold in countries like Indonesia. Mechanically, the EV could get a battery pack with a capacity of 20 to 25 kWh and a single electric motor mounted at the front axle. The electric vehicle will likely have a 300-kilometre of range. Price-wise, the compact EV may cost between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 15 lakh (All prices, ex-showroom). When launched in India, the Comet EV will compete with the Citroen eC3 and the Tata Tiago EV.

New Maruti Suzuki Swift

Maruti Suzuki will introduce the next-generation Swift sometime in 2024. The specs and features have not been made public by the carmaker yet. However, rumours state that it will use a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine. Further, the upcoming new Swift will likely have an ARAI-certified mileage between 35km/l and 40km/l. According to the rumour, the all-new Suzuki Swift will have rounded edges and bold lines as a part of its exterior styling. The new model could get a longer wheelbase, offering more room in the second row of seats and the trunk.

Next-gen Tata Tiago

Tata Motors, a home-grown automaker, will launch the much-anticipated Tiago hatchback sometime around 2024 or 2025. It will underpin the new Alfa (Agile Light Flexible Advanced) architecture, similar to the Punch SUV and the Altroz hatchback.
According to industry reports, the model will have a range of improvements in both exterior and interior. As of now, there are no official updates on the upcoming version's features and price. Closer to the launch, new details of the new Tata Tiago are more likely to come.

Tata Altroz CNG

Tata Motors will reportedly bring the CNG model of the Tata Altroz in the coming weeks to India. The model was on display by the carmaker at the recent Auto Expo. A 1.2-litre Revotron petrol engine that has Dyna-pro technology added to it, will operate the model. It will offer a maximum power of 77bhp and a peak torque of 97Nm while operating on CNG. Two CNG tanks, totaling 60 litres are installed in the Altroz CNG. The CNG model will have no changes in terms of exterior and interior. When launched in India, it will compete with the Hyundai i20 N-Line.
